EN: The text is a translation of the French poem "Warsaw Woman", written in February 1831 by the Parisian poet and playwright Casimir Delavan under the influence of the Warsaw Uprising. The song was written and titled in imitation of "The Marseillaise" (La Marseillaise, literally "citizen of the Marseillaise"; cf. especially the chorus: "To arms, gradzhena!" - "Poles, with hostility!"). A month later, the booklet with the lyrics arrived in Warsaw, where the poem and historian Karol Sienkiewicz (Henryk Sienkiewicz's uncle) translated the poem immediately (at the end of March) and published it in the Warsaw magazine Polak Sumionny. Immediately after that, it was set to music by the famous opera composer, director and conductor of the Warsaw Opera House, Karol Kurpinski, and on April 5, 1831, the song was performed publicly for the first time during an opera performance at the Theater of Nations. The public received it with enthusiasm. In the following decades, the song was one of the main symbols of the Polish national movement. In the years 1918-1927, before the official approval of Dabrowski's Mazurka as the national anthem of Poland, Warsawianka was one of the 5 candidates for the role of national anthem. In the interwar period, the first bars of the song served as the call sign for the Polish Radio II program. One of the most popular songs of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.
The name "Varshavjanka 1831" was given at the beginning of the 20th century to distinguish it from a new poem of the same name - known in Russian as "Varshavjanka 1905".
