In April of 2005 we broke ground on construction of a new energy-efficient slipform stone house originally intended as intern housing for our Green University® internship program. This slideshow provides a quick overview of the entire building process, from the bottom up. More extensive photos and text of the building process are available on our website at dirtcheapbuilder.com/

You said the materials 'may' cheap. But in reality, the material should MUST be cheap.
I can't get over the amount of free material you were able to secure. I wish I lived near the dump where you got so much lumber & other useful stuff. Everything is very beautiful, looking like the house had been sitting there for 150 years. I particularly like the efficient masonry fireplace. Congratulations!
That was a pretty ambitious project to take on...but it looks like the final product was well worth the effort! Very beautiful home. The fact that you utilized so much recycled material just makes it all the more appealing. Kudos!

We built our 1st home in 1971 for $5,500.00 + my wages went to the building costs which was $40.00 per week (as in 1971 women in shops made about $1.00 per hour). I was lucky because I worked in our family PHARMACY and I was able to take my wonderful, well behaved son to work with me & he stayed in the back room in his playpen where my dad worked on the business books & kept 1/4 of one eye on his grandson ! 👌👶😂. Dad alo allowed us all the diapers and all the formula we needed !!!! But we made that up to dad later on & our SON decided on his 1st BIRTHDAY that he was a BIG BOY & no longer needed a baba (aka: bottle) & that from that day on HE wanted a gwass (glass) and that he would dwink (drink) milk !!!!!!! So, a years worth of formula wasn't too bad ! We lived with my dad & PAID no rent, but we paid the ELECTRIC BILL & the weekly groceries & I did the cooking, laundry, & basic housework for my dad, my younger brother, and my husband and I and the baby of course. Friends also helped us with the house, so we were able to build a very roomy 3/1 for around $6k !!!!!! We were also able to have CENTRAL REVERSE CYCLE A/C & HEAT $775.00, wall to wall CARPETING $600.00, and CUSTOM CABINETS in the KITCHEN & BATHROOM $500.00 !!!! Our friends did the ELECTRIC INSTALLATION, the PLUMBING INSTALLATION, & LIFTED the RAFTERS and SECURED them to the TIE BEAMS !!!! We paid for all the materials ourselves and we did most all of house-build ourselves !!!! It took us most every night after work and every weekend for a YEAR to complete our 1st home and we moved in 3.5 weeks before my 18th BIRTHDAY !!!!! I just wish we had kept that house & our 2nd & 3rd houses too and that we had RENTED those HOUSES out to tenants ! But being "DUMB" we thought selling and moving on was what we were supposed to do !!!! So, build your own homes and keep them and rent them (but get books on being a LANDLORD & READ THEM from cover to cover) !!!!! And SAVE every rental dime you can towards retirement & perhaps buy FIXER UPPERS, fix them up & rent them too -- more MONEY for your ROTH !!! Even if you're 50 or 55 orso, you can start SAVING NOW !!!!!! And my last point: LOOK FOR and USE 2nd hand MATERIALS that you can GET FOR FREE !!!!!! And as I said earlier, get friends to HELP YOU -- especially with things you don't know: ELECTRIC, PLUMBING, ROOFING, ETCETERA !!! Best of Luck to All !!!
Hi Thomas,I've been a big fan of your slip form videos and techniques for a few years now. I was recently driving to an undisclosed location that I travel to on at least a semi annual basis. I glanced to the left and said to myself, "Self, that place sure looks familiar" on the way home I made sure to check if the greenhouse was attached and sure enough, it was! For some reason I thought it was located in a different town! It looks just as good in person. You made my trip worthwhile.
I think this is the most fantastic approach to building a house. The environmental aspects and recycling alone deserve so much respect. Inspiring and clever from start to finish. And I guarantee this fine abode will still be standing in 300 years - unlike many of our substandard suburban dwellings.

Great Dwelling, I really admire when people recycle and source materials for little and do a great job. Love to see a video of now time.
I watch this 4 times already and never get bored... it is fantastic!! I wish I could copy this house.
Using scrap and off-cuts = inspired. And the floor tiles are amazing. The end result is beautiful. Kudos.
Sick! I can't believe the amount of work, holy crap. It was definitely worth it though i love it im a huge fan of stone work. The fire place, radiant heat, solar water collection, and green house, took it to a whole new level. Congrats on building a beautiful house. If you don't have family to leave it to ill gladly take it,lol
Wow wow wow so gorgeous and very beautiful Ideas and beautiful home
Nice job! Being a builder myself for 3 decades on the east coast I can appreciate the hard work you guys did..Scrounging for materials, loading them and unloading them is brutal...But, all's well that ends well...:)...I hope you can finally relax and enjoy it but that homestead looks like it's going to be a lifer...:)...

Wow, that took a lot of vision, weekly visits to the dump, a commitment to excellence and a incredible amount of patience! That was an incredible journey that is now the center place of your existence!
Wow! I’m in “AWE” of the CRAFTSMANSHIP involved, and the THRIFTINESS of sourcing free building materials. I applaud you! Thanks for sharing.

I love your dedication to building as economically and efficiently as possible. 👍
Wow! So glad I stumbled across this video, and your website. This is absolutely amazing. I’ve been studying Tiny homes.... this just brings on endless possibilities. What hard work this was but it truly looks amazing and unique. Great Job!
Thank you so much for the very informative pictures and narration. This will really help me in my plan to build a stone house. I was looking on how you did it with the steel bars and the stones and concrete pouring. And you did it great! Thank you so much!!!
Very impressed with the amount of second an salvage materials used. End product of flat gorgeous
I like the idea of using the stones you dig out from the excavation to build the outside wall .... it's smart and cost effective, beside it's environmentally green .... super cool ..... love this video .... 2 thumbs up
WOW!!! What a beautiful, warm, well thought out and well built home. I love it. Your use of cheap or free materials is ingenious. Thanks for recording this and letting us watch the progress. In our community we have recycling stations incorporated into our dumpster areas, but as often as I go there, little to nothing is as good as what you were able to acquire.

This is so beautiful. I've always wanted a stone house!
Love this! Looks like outstanding craftmanship and bet its super comfy in winter.
Hi folks. You kids done good. Battered stone, combo-ed with the sip rems is a nice touch. Little hydronic system, quasi thrombie wall with thermo syphon dhw, all excellent. Tons of work, design on the run. Gambrel roof, busy, but ok. Good dumpster diving. Dave, from Mikey Block.
It`s a wonderfull and informative video. I especially like how much recycled materials went in the new construction. Always nice to learn some new tricks. Thank you for sharing.
Very impressive, looks like lots of work but well worth it!
So encouraging. I need to start looking into acquiring materials from second-hand sources.
Amazing! An absolutely beautiful house and a very useful explanation of each stage.
Wow we, I'm really impressed, hello there Henry Wilson here, I'm a stone mason of 30 years experience. I'm retired now. But yes you have done ok with that. Henry Wilson from Clitheroe Lancashire England.

Builder here from NZ, I think this is an amazing build, absolutely love the hand craftsmanship and recycled material/alternative building.
Wow! This house is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
This is a very beautiful example of letting your local resources dictate your construction design and technic. You saved at least 50% on materials by doing this and have are far superior house to show for it. Well Done
This was a very popular building technique back in the early 1970's among the "back to the landers." I helped build a slip form barn in western New York State in 1975.
One of the best houses on KZread by far
I have often wandered how the rock on this style of home was done, thanks for sharing. I have been interested in making a cordwood style home, easier, and should last. Your new home is so beautiful, bet you are loving it. Thatkind of exposed wood ceiling gives such a nice cabin or rustic feel.
Omg love it,fair play....what a serious project to undertake and with outstanding results...👏🏆🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
You're right...that fire place is on the money!
Really informative - well done! And the lilacs are spectacular!
Spectacular!! I always wanted a stone house 🏡 !
Fantastic Video and Information!!!! Best build I've seen on KZread, ....Fantastic!!!
A truly inspiring video, thanks for sharing :)
l used to live in a gorgeous 1930's Stone Cottage! Best years of my life!
this is really such an impressive build. the use of recycled materials and upcycling is both brilliant and environmentally responsible. well done to you and all the crew involved 💯✌
fantastic effort, you should be very proud of this build, in this disposable world you've proved what can be done, thats just so much more interesting than a new-build home, cheers!!
Beautiful work.
Nice work. Genius roofing for facia. The way the GH facia meets perfectly w/ the house. NO PAINTING FOREVER!

a wonderful slide show. thank you
Gorgeous and so creative!
My Dream home! Beautiful!
Great work, thanks for posting.
Beautiful alignment and ergonomic. Nice job Mr. Slave!
Fabulous. Bloomin well done fellers. I've never been a big fan of 'Crinkley Tin' roofing, but I can see the sense in them... The smaller graduating size of stones from bottom to top, doesn't detract from the overall aspect either. In fact, the effect looks lovely, and gives a kind of balance, I think. Glad I stumbled onto your youtube posting.. thanks.
inspiration. Thanks. I loved the idea of stairs rebar balusters. So many ideas I will have to watch the video over.
Brilliant, beautiful house. Thanks for showing us some of the work that went into it.

When I saw the giant wheels in the background, I knew exactly where you built that house. After a little digging through your website, my thought was confirmed. I used to drive through there just about daily.

What a sweet build!
Beautiful.
This should be an inspiration to everyone building a house that it is possible to incorporate recycled materials and what a beautiful result!
Congratulations , what a fantastic build !
realy amazing! it looks good and it makes perfect sense.
Excellent use of materials.
what an awesome building. well done.
I MUST SAY.. THAT IS ONE SOLID HOUSE!!!!..
This house was more labor intensive than the first stone house I built, mostly because the rocks were smaller. Fortunately, I had great help through our Green University, LLC internship program. There were usually about three of us on the project at once, and we spread the building process out over several years, interspersed between wilderness survival trips, book writing projects, and such. I have no idea how many man hours that was! As for the cost, I believe it added up to about $45,000.
