World's Finest Dove Hotel - Dry Stone Wall Building
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
We spend 39 days building a Dovecote or 'Doocot' (a home for doves or pigeons). The stone work construction is entirely 'dry stone' (built without any mortar). This video shows the complete build from start to finish including a dry stone arch, pop holes, stone carving installation, cheek ends and corners, and all the wood work. The roof was built in my workshop and was made out of timber and reclaimed slate before being lifted on in one piece.
Working with natural stone is a wonderful, cathartic process. I really hope you enjoy watching and also that our own enjoyment and pride in the project is evident.
All involved in the project are extremely grateful to Sir Fraser and Lady Morrison who commissioned the Dovecote and without whom projects that we all get so much pleasure from, like this, would not come to fruition.
A dovecote/dovecot or doocot (Scots) is a building to house doves or pigeons. Dovecotes can be built in a variety of shapes; they can be free-standing or built into the end of a house or barn. They usually contain holes for the birds to nest.
Traditionally dovecotes were often placed in prominent positions on grand estates with Lords showcasing their right to keep doves to those who passed (ordinary citizens were not allowed to keep birds).
The earliest examples of purpose-built dovecotes in Scotland are often circular in shape, tapering to a domed roof, similar to the style of a ‘beehive’. The design evolved to a ‘lectern’ style - rectangular with a sloping roof - and then to more decorative structures.

Excellent video James. Great to see these traditional skills are still in use today. The Dovecot is of particular interest to me. As a young lad I was pigeon fancier and I recall visiting a stone Dovecot at Corstorphine Edinburgh. The nest holes were part of the stone structure and because the the Dovecot tapered to the top of the building the droppings landed in the centre of the structure floor leaving a clear pathway around the edge where you could walk. On the day of my visit the droppings were about a foot deep. It would not have been a pleasant experience to step in it. I am 77 so thanks for allowing me to indulge in a childhood memory.
These tiny home videos are bonkers.

Thanks! 2 mins in watching the way he was going about splitting with the chisel I thought, "I've had to chip at some stone the odd time for something or other, but surely, actually splitting one like that can't be as easy as outlining it and then a few more smacks." So I grabbed a stone the size of a loaf of bread from the yard, along with my late grandad's chisel and a 2 pound hammer, and in ten minutes I was floored by just how easy it was to uncover a fairly-flat face from beneath an irregular end. For that moment and many other reasons, I think I'm falling in love with stonework, drystone in particular.
Beautiful!

Im not so shocked by old walls and works of stone masonry. You have to remember that we have a different view and appreciation of time than our ancestors did even a few hundred years ago. Building stone walls and other structures was just one activity one could get up to between other things, like tending the fields and animals. No youtube to waste away your evenings, so might as well go deal with that pile of stones you picked out of the field while plowing.
Fabulous, it looks like it has been standing there for years already. Love the little pigeon holes. Can't wait to see the next project.

So few of us will earn such an honor. Knowing the honor bestowed upon you, you continually express your gratitude throughoutthe video. That’s what my father said. So I became a mason as he said he wished he had. What I can say is, most masons picked the wrong career. It’s dangerous, unhealthy, heavy work and as an old journeyman told me when I was an apprentice, “the novelty wears off”. Many years later my father asked what made me choose such a difficult trade. When I told him it was his idea he suggested he must have been drunk at the time. Thanks pop😂
