The Diamond DA40 and the Sling Tsi are almost neck to neck in their performance and mission profile. Anyone who is considering building a Sling TSi should also consider a Diamond DA40 and vise versa.
I personally trained in the DA40 and i’ve spent a considerable amount of time in both the DA40 and Sling Tsi, this is why I though they are worth comparing. Here are the stats for each plane and the categories used for comparisons.

I think acquisition time and mechanical ability are understated factors in this video. A better summary would be if you want a plane like this in a short time-frame the DA40 is the better option. Build time on the Sling is certainly many months maybe years. And what about an individuals mechanical ability? If it's not so hot, then also the DA40 is the winner. But if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and are willing to spend the time and energy to build it, then the Sling comes out ahead because you get a brand-new airplane built to your specific specs and one with better performance.

@@nivekdeus it will be my pleasure to guide you through the process. I believe i have a video on my channel talks about the process. But, I would recommend to join a flying club if you will only fly at least 4 times a week, but if you want to do part 61 at a local airport type G class, you can find a school, the good thing about this option, you decide when to fly, once a week, or once a month, it totally up to you, depends on your budget and how often you want to train. Consistently, it's very important to keep your skills up to speed, i met people who took them 5 years, using this option. Hopefully this is help.

I have been flying for about 20 years and I haven't done the math in a long time, but last time I did, the approximate break end point of renting VS owning was right around 150 hrs/year mark for a single piston airplane. Unless you have money to burn or just enjoy the thought of owning your own airplane, the convenience of renting has its advantages. Also, if where you rent is also a flight school, then there is better/more maintenance requirements, which I rather like from a safety perspective.

Hi Mike Great video and interesting comparison, however, you compared the newest model Sling TSi with the Diamond DA40 from more than 20 years ago, which is not very fair on Diamond, or the choice that someone contemplating a new aircraft is going to make. The performance of the TAF Sling 4 was rather unremarkable, with a cruise speed of 130 KTAS and range of 700 NM , and it was not until the Sling TSi introduced flush riveting, a new wing and the turbocharged Rotax 915iS engine that it began to shine. The Diamond DA40, that you used as a comparison, also had unremarkable performance when powered by the trusty, but archaic Lycoming IO360, certified 65 years ago, in 1955! For the last 20 years the Diamond DA40 NG has had a turbocharged Jet-A burning Mercedes-Benz engine, first supplied by Thielert/Continental and now by Austro. The Diamond DA40 NG wins on speed, range, fuel consumption, fuel cost, fuel availability, insurance premiums, grass strip performance and has a Tundra tyre option. For some, it will facilitate progression to the Diamond DA50 single and/or DA42 NG and/or DA62 twins. The Diamond DA40 NG has a Maximum Continuous Power cruise speed of 154 KTAS which is faster than the Sling TSi Maximum Continuous Power cruise of 148 KTAS quoted by TAF. The Diamond DA40 NG burns just 5.1 US GPH at 60% power of Jet-A and has a range of 948 NM against the Sling TSi range of 750 NM. Therefore, the Diamond DA40 NG has a lower fuel burn, of a cheaper fuel and its range is 200 NM longer than the Sling TSi. In most parts of the world, , Jet-A is half the price of MoGas and a third of the price of AvGas. Even in the USA Jet-A is the cheapest fuel although by not such a great margin. You can buy the fully certified Diamond DA40 NG new from the factory, complete and ready to fly away, or used from Diamond or on the secondhand market. The Sling TSi is a great experimental aircraft, which comes very close to the Diamond DA40 NG, if you have the time and skill to build a kit and maintain the aircraft yourself. www.diamondaircraft.com/en/private-pilots/aircraft/da40/tech-specs/ www.slingaircraft.com/aircraft/sling-tsi/

I fully agree with Philip GC11. If you are comparing the Diamond DA40 to the Sling TSi you should at least mention the DA40NG. Anyway the Diamond is a certified aeroplane which the Sling is not, so it is expected to be more expensive. Can you do the same comparison using the DA40NG, even if it is more expensive? That would be a more interesting comparison.

@@Aventura2005 Although I don't always agree with Mike's comparisons and commentary, the DA40 as a certified alternative to the Sling is exactly what I thought of. The DA40 NG is an unfair comparison because even a two-year-old 2018 NG model is wildly expensive at more than $600,000 CAD! A 2021 NG is priced at just under $800,000 CAD! A *beautiful* plane but it's far too expensive to be compared to the SLING.

One of things I've found in owning an LSA (PiperSport) with a Rotax engine is that A&Ps want nothing to do with working on them. To the point of "don't even ask me to change a tire on that thing." Some of this will depend on where you live. I love flying the plane but I'm not really wanting ro be a mechanic. This comes into play when you have an issue on a cross country. You can get seriously stuck in a hurry. Anyone will work on a Lycoming. Rotax? Not so much. If not restricted to LSA I would definitely buy a certified GA aircraft.

Maybe interesting for buyers is the number of planes built of a certain kind. That influences for example your insurance rate and how easy it is to sell it second hand. Currently there are 10 SLING 4 in the US (of which 1 is a TSI) and 761 DA-40s (of which 71 are NGs). Quite a difference.

However there are not enough machines on the market and we will need to see second hand ones to get costs better evaluated.

Class2 instructor, the amazing stories of Diamond safety are just crazy. And so many of them. I met the 70 year old that walked away from a midair at 500ft on final. The experimental that slipped in on top of him was trashed and the pilot broke many bones. That DA 40 was repaired and back on the line in a pretty short time. Diamonds can burn. They are designed to prevent fuel leaks though. I know of a DA20 that burned. I think it sparked the grass after a hard, off field landing. The traditional spam cans scare the heck out of me now. The video gets a lot of things incorrect IMO. I don’t know much about the sling. Comparing experimental to certified is just wrong though. I’m afraid it’s a bit over this young pilot’s head. I could likely learn a lot about building from him. Hopes he talks more about that.

RV-10 can carry everything loaded, cruise as fast as a Cirrus SR22. Can’t figure out why you would want a plane that gets tossed around like a paper airplane vs a plane that has a lot better penetration in turbulence plus you won’t be burning up crank bearings like a Rotax engine does.

While the diesel powerplant runs A1 which a third of the price. That’s a big difference. airframe durability is yet to be proved with the Sling. Most of it is blind fasteners and very thin sheet (hence they’re light) but how would that stand up to couple of thousand hours. On the other hand. Metal structure is way easier to repair than composite

Maybe I'm "special", but I did 95% of my training and early flying in a high wing & yoke sled, and I found the transition to a stick to be intuitive. Within the first 5 minutes, the stick felt natural and I can go back and forth between the two with little issue. The one advantage I see with a stick vs. a yoke is that it's easier in training to learn to only have one hand on the stick (cause there's not really room for two, not on the DA40 at least). It took me a while to break the habit of having both hands on the yoke, I guess it was engrained from driving.

I'm not into owning a craft with Rotax engine. To bad the Sling seems nice.

It would be better if you compare the Sling with a Tecnam P2010 instead you do it with the Diamond Da40 ....

Personally I would rather own the Sling, but biggest ding against it is that, I could not use it to test.

You can test in a Sling TSi. My son and I have done all our training and checkrides in a TSi we did a build assist on, Love my TSi!!!

Nothing in the FAA regulations against it. FAA loosened up a LOT on experimentals, IFR is ok too.

My RV-10 is cheaper (than the Diamond), faster (185 Ktas cruise), more powerful, and has a BRS parachute. I have about 1000 pounds useful load. Plus, I don’t have a Rotax gearbox to replace every 300 hours. Easy choice.

Nice video - but you should have done this comparison before you committed to building a Sling. The risk of cognitive dissonance in you deciding to conclude favourably on the contender to the Sling here would be far too much, leading to a strong bias. Thanks

10 gallons of 100 LL , on average , would cost about $90 or so in Germany , while in US on average it would be $45-50 ( California though is very “special”)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... but the DA40 is ugly as sin! I love it anyway because of how she handles. Sling TSI is prettier but I have no experience in it.

Please, please, please! If you don’t want to deal with calculating fuel and range to get more capacity for people and baggage that’s fine, but don’t act like people who can do the math don’t have the option. Would your Sling be better with only 20 gallons capacity? You could get in more stuff! Think about it.

Well I can tell you what at least one difference is: one aircraft is very beautiful and the other is an ungodly ugly abomination of I literally can't even think of enough words to describe how ugly Diamond aircraft are.
