I have a question. Whenever I jump from a diving board, I get a drop in my stomach. Scientists say it's because of weightlessness, which I get when I'm in freefall. But here do astronauts also have that drop in their stomach? Or do they get used to it? Edit: Could you please stop replying, this comment is three months ago

@@HI-xr9ze The equivalence principle which Einstein used for general relativity states that you cannot differentiate between an object in freefall and an object being weightless in space. When you fall, you are weightless because the ground doesn't push up against your body. So being weightless feels exactly like being in freefall or on a bungee ride. But astronauts don't seem to feel that drop, maybe they just get used to it.

It's basically the same thing when you go diving. The buoyancy provided by the water counteracts gravity and you are effectively weightless. That's why astronauts train in water tanks. You can move in three dimensions just as Chris does here, though more slowly as water produces much more drag than air.

It actually has pretty serious effects. You get used to not using many muscles and need tons of physical therapy after coming back to earth to gain back functionality to those muscles and there is also a photo of an astronaut that's being carried away from the landing zone of a spaceship because he can't walk(both bc of muscle atrophy induced by lack of gravity and disorientation induced by the landing) and it's actually a pretty scary scene. Other that that, it's cool as hell

The astronauts on the ISS experience 90 percent of the gravity we do, Earth is just curving away from them as fast they’re falling so they’re suspended in orbit. They’re experiencing “zero G,” not “no gravity.” And no the G in “zero G” does not stand for gravity.

But anyway that acceleration down at the same rate of gravitational acceleration cancels out, and you can’t tell up or down based on feeling alone. The only way to tell down is because your eyes can see that you’re heading in that direction.

@Michael Paterson It doesn't feel like that. There are some flights where you can experience this stuff for some seconds up to some minutes and it does not feel like falling. Otherwise, I would feel extremely uncomfortable in this situation, because the feeling of falling is something I really hate. Low gravity feels pretty good tho. A little bit like you are floating in water but also so much different from the feeling you have in water. Very hard to explain.
