Sleeping In a Building Site: Our First Night In Our New House Boat! | this tiny life

Heya! Welcome back to our off-grid, fully electric house boat build journey!
This week, we can finally move on board and sleep in our building site home! First, we head out in a van to pick up the next big and bulky second-hand item for our boat build. After successfully transporting it back to the boat, we spend our first night on our new boat - a memorable moment in our journey! But the work doesn't stop there. In this episode, we turn our attention to installing an induction hob into our secondhand kitchen sideboard. It's a fiddly job, but we're up for the challenge!
Join us as we showcase the ups and downs of DIY boat building and share our experience of building a unique tiny floating home that aligns with our values. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel to stay up to date with our latest videos as we document our journey towards creating an eco-friendly and sustainable home on the water.
We've recently launched our Ko-Fi account where, if you'd like to help us keep creating videos like this, you can buy us a coffee! No commitment, but greatly appreciated if you would like to contribute: ko-fi.com/thistinylife

OUR STORY
We're Jack & Gabby. We've sold our original boat Flora after a journey of almost four years, and are now building our own, off-grid, fully solar-powered, narrowboat home. We're not new to tiny home living on the water but we aren't hugely experienced with DIY. Come aboard as we learn what works and what doesn't throughout the build.

Certainly not boring, youve both chosen your own paths, and fulfilled your dreams, whether on boat, van or wherever. Thats a gift. 😊

used to call my similar mattress the “dead body” whenever I had to move it anywhere 😳 My advice (albeit very late) is to get yourself a REALLY good mattress protector, including something that protects the mattress from any sort of spills, leaks or just anything liquid. Moisture protection is also necessary for the underside of your natural mattress especially where condensation and the potential for mould exists. I’m only stressing this because once your mattress gets wet, it takes a VERY long time to dry out, and depending upon the material used inside the mattress, it can.... how do I put this, it can smell like a wet dog...for days until it dries out. I’ve made every single mistake mentioned above. I had to learn the hard way ... hopefully so that you won’t have to ❤

Looks more comfy than my double mattress, other boaters are such lovely people, I have noticed other narrowboat channels everyone helps one another hard to find these days.

You both need a little drawer under the bed with a top on it. So you can use it as a step up. I have seen it before in a KZread video about a tiny home

Mohair comes from angora goats. It's very warm. Not to confuse with angora wool that comes from angora rabbits! Glad you've put it on slates as it will need to breath! Did laugh at the eggs! Ouch at about $1 each here that's a catastrophe.

Well done and the bed does look very comfortable and roomy. I did notice that the frame seems to be moving a bit when you got up on it. I would suggest stiffening it up even more because the last thing you will want is that frame collapsing at the worst possible moment. When you think you've made it strong enough, add a couple more supports / corner gussets just to be sure.

Hey Rod, yeh I think I'm going to brace it up a little more just to stop any movement. But trickier now the mattress is in place but agree that it's better to be safe than sorry! We'll have to be careful up there until I get round to it 😂

Your kettle looks like its bottom is crimped on like a tin lid. Induction hobs REALLY want a smooth contact surface between the glass and the cookware being used. You posted this a month ago so hopefully you’ve found out, and found a way to deal with this, but if A) I’m right about the kettle and B) it’s working ENOUGH, just know that you’re losing a LOT of efficiency inducting across that small rim. I’m about to go re-watch that section and I’ll follow up if I was wrong. :)

  • @thistinylife

Hey! Ha nicely noticed 😅 they're our old kettles from our previous boat and don't work on the induction at all. We've been heating the water in a pan instead... A new kettle is on the cards when we get back onboard after Arti's visit to the boat shed!
