It's been a very chilly few days on board! Last week we had a few comments from subscribers in Canada who are currently facing -30C during the day! What's the coldest you've ever seen it?! Thank you for watching this week and for your constant support. If you enjoyed the video, we'd love it if you'd consider buying a coffee to help us keep warm and create more vlogs like this :) ko-fi.com/thistinylife

Humidity makes a huge difference. A damp cold will penetrate right through to your bones, while a dryer cold is much easier to insulate against. 💕🇨🇦

I worked for many years in an open air museum here in Wales and I met lots of people visiting from Canada during the winter who felt colder here than back at their home where temperatures are much lower. It gets into the bones but luckily we don't usually have to worry about frost bite in minutes unlike in Canada. Love your videos. Thank you.

You should have a water hammer arrestor on the end of that water pipe where the washing machine T's off. If you have any weak spots in your piping, water hammer will find it.

I lived in Edmonton, Alberta here in Canada in the 1980s. One day I walked to work in minus 60F. My glasses froze to my face.Any exposed skin would freeze very quickly. We had no furniture in our apartment, but we had good warm clothes. Priorities are different, depending on where you live. I am back in my home province of Ontario now. It is considerably warmer here. A word of warning. My sister and her husband were renovating their home when their daughter was a toddler. She was heard to say Oh shit! when she was playing with her toys. Little people have big ears as the saying goes.

Here’s to warmer days…… Take good care, Hugs xxx

My 2 cents: You may want to consider keeping a couple of centimeters of insulation or dead air between the steel hull and the water pipes. If the pipes are well below the water line then you probably need not worry about frozen and split pipes. In general, though insulating including a vapor barrier before you close up the walls on the hull is a good idea. Keeps cool in the summer and warm and dry (no condensation) in winter. Here, when it gets cold, instead of boating we have to put on skates and go skating on the Rideau canal. No boats here! Love the vlog keep up the good work.

you have an entrance hatch with such holes that the stove can be heated 24 hours a day, it won’t do any good, even if you cover the doors with a blanket, ideally, of course, make internal doors, otherwise your engine control works in combination with forced ventilation. ..

The canal looks so beautiful this time of year but I bet it is super cold on the boat at times. What temperature is it indoors when your fire is going ? Well done on the plumbing job and getting the washing machine going. .I searched all the comments to see how much power it had used haha..I used to be a caretaker and did lots of DIY but now been disabled many years so have lots and lots of jobs waiting for me to tackle haha. But it always gives me a great sense of achievement when I manage to get another little thing done.So love watching you all on your little adventures. Thank you for the entertainment. Well done on the plumbing job Jack! Might be time to invest in one of those traditional ceiling mounted drying racks to hang the laundry on in front of the fire. Then in summer get a clothes line to go on the tiller when you’re moored.

Another great video guys. It wasn't obvious from your plumbing clip if you were fitting a pipe insert. Just in case you didn't know, most push fit plumbing fittings should be used with a pipe insert. It stops the pipe from deforming and leaking over time.

  • @theresamnsota3925
    @theresamnsota39256 ай бұрын

I don’t know what they draw for power, but DeLonghi makes an oil filled radiator style space heater. I bought their small room one on Amazon for our laundry room. The laundry room was an addition added by our house’s previous owners. There’s no basement underneath (which provides natural insulation) and no ductwork/heating vents. Living in Wisconsin means cold in the winter and I’d rather not have my pipes freeze and then burst. That small heater does a great job warming up the small space that is my laundry room. And because it’s a radiator style, it’s not blowing dry, hot air which causes dry noses and throats in the winter.

Guys most of your washing can be done at 30 degrees. That's why you got an A + rating. I know your using solar my son lives in a van and has for about 6 years now he also has recently bought a washing machine it has amazed him how little of his solar it actually used.

Yep we wash on 30... It still uses a lot of power to heat and when we don't have a guarantee of sunlight the next day we have to be mindful of how much we use. The hot water is free from our wood stove, hence why we added it to take the edge of the cold water from the tank

It's been interesting, we've been pleasantly surprised with how well the solar has kept us topped up. We do limit our power use in the winter to just charging laptops and LED lighting etc... Nov/Dec/Jan have stretched us a bit, especially with how wet it's been this year. The sun being low in the sky has a huge impact on how efficient the panels are, sadly we can't tilt to the south. If we could do that we would be able to gather a lot more during the darker months. I'm planning on working on a new mounting system over the summer to help us be more efficient!

@@trevorsbarkingmadchannel4501 we've been quite conscious of our usage and having the mooring reduces our need to move. Fortunately the time it got a little too low for my liking was over Christmas and we spent some time off the boat. When we were back it had fully recharged. Good thing with the lithium batteries is they can sit happily

it's quite hard to tell as we're charging as we wash. Our total percentage only dropped down 3% we have 15kwh of storage. The water heating really is the only time it takes a huge amount from the batteries

The reality is that clothes will come clean in COLD water in a washing machine - any clothes, any machine. Try it - it will free you forever from the worry of heating washing machine water!

  • @jhenline7813

I set my washer on the coolest setting and fill it by hand with hot water before putting the clothes in. Takes about 2 and a half small buckets, but you’ll have to see how much yours needs. If you haven’t put enough in, the washer will top itself up.

That's what we've done, although some of the baby things need washing on a hotter setting to sterilise. Annoyingly, if we put the hot water in before the machine fills... It drains the water out before filling 😅
