In 2003 Metallica would release their much maligned album St. Anger. The band had gone through a tumultuous time during the making of the record with frontman James Hetfield leaving the group to attend rehab to deal with substance abuse issues. A lot of the turmoil was captured on the 2004 documentary Some Kind Of Monster. A year after the album was released the band was out on tour in Europe during the summer playing their own shows and headlining a variety of festivals across the continent. At one gig in the UK drummer Lars Ulrich was a no show leaving the band in a difficult position. Do they cancel the gig or get someone to fill in? That’s what were going to discuss in today’s video.
On June 6, 2004 Metallica was set to headline the Download Festival, the UK’s biggest metal musical festival. The band had previously played Lisbon Portugal and were on there way to the UK when MTV would report that the band’s drummer Lars Ulrich was feeling under the weather, without disclosing the cause or the symptoms. Ulrich would take a detour to Germany to receive medical treatment while his bandmates headed to the UK. This wasn’t the first time Metallica dealt with illnesses or injuries that jeopordized their live gigs. 4 years earlier in 2000, frontman James Hetfield would suffer a slipped disc and the band had a revolving lineup of singers including Kid Rock and Korn’s Johnathan Davis. Then 8 years prior Hetfield would suffer serious burns to his arms during the group’s co-headlining tour with Guns N’ Roses resulting in John Marshall of Metal Church playing rhythm guitar for a handful of gigs while Hetfield was limited to vocal duties.
Download Festival organizer andy copping would recall Metallica’s infamous gig in 2004 writing on Instagram “Download 2004. The year where there was a no show from Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. I remember receiving a call telling me to go backstage where I was given the news,”
“There were two choices a) do Metallica cancel? or b) do Metallica convince other drummers on site to fill in? I suggested they cancel because I just couldn’t see b) happening, particularly as quite a few drummers that were asked said no.”
Loudersound would publish a piece by writer Alexander milas who was in attendance at the festival that year and recalled that after word spread of Lars being a no-show rumors spread amongst those in attendance about what happened. He would write “I heard Lars Ulrich jumped out of a helicopter as it was landing and disappeared into the crowd,” one allegedly in-the-know label executive tells me with all the severity of a news anchor between JD-and-Coke burps.
Other theories circulating the sardine-packed backstage bar range from death to, even worse, Lars’s departure from the band. ” he’d write.
Metallica weren’t going to let their fans down and as part of their 2004 european tour Slipknot was their opening act and Slipknot that night was also scheduled to play ahead of metallica’s headlining spot at the uk festival.
To salvage the show band would spend several hours rehearsing with several drummers from bands who were playing on the bill that night including Slipknot SLayer and Lars own drum tech. The idea that night was for several drummers to help Metallica make it through their live show. The band would show up an hour late to their gig with frontman james hetfield informing the crowd of what was happening that night. Slayer’s Dave Lombardo would perform battery and the four horseman, while Joey Jordison of Slipknot would perform a majority of the songs in the set playing creeping death, seek and destroy, for whom the bell tolls and the last 5 songs of the set. Jordison while wearing his slipknot mask would play 8 of the 11 songs Metallica performed that night. Ulrich’s drum tech fleming Larsen would sit in with the band performing fade to black. Jordison would be hailed as the hero of the day (no pun intended), but Dave Lombardo also played an important part in the events that day. Lombardo’s time with Metallica went back over two decades recalling to Loudersound first hearing the band “

Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo had something in common that Lars doesn't: they never stopped working on their craft. Real artists don't let success get in the way of becoming better. If you're serious about your craft, you're always trying to get better. Danny Carey is a better drummer now in his 60's than when I first saw him for the Undertow tour.

I somewhat agree but Lars got burned out from the justice tour. The psychological health of most of the band kept getting worse during this era as grieving for Cliff became more apparent. AJFA album was a coping mechanism for Cliffs death... That album is the heaviest and most political album Metallica has done. And because of it James doesn't like getting political anymore. During or maybe after the black album thats when they were getting heavy on their drug abuse.... Which Lars has admitted has affected his drumming

I disagree. Lars reminds me of Ringo. He’s a drummer songwriter . He’s also the producer. He’s a different vein than the other drummers. Technically, he’s a not at the same level. But musically, he’s on top. All I need is Dave’s words: : "I think Lars is a good drummer. He's a good arranger. He arranges… Without Lars, there wouldn't be a METALLICA. So you have to give him credit for what he does for the band."

@@rgdec74 without Dave Mustaine, there wouldn't be a Metallica. Dave wrote half their first album, without his songs, they wouldn't of had enough material to make their first album, and might've missed their shot. Dave was replaced and the band went on to be fine. Lars could've been replaced after their first album and they'd of gone on to be fine. James and Kirk at the ones coming up with the riffs, Lars just chimes in on which riffs go where. It's not like he's a Michael Romeo and composing all the music himself.

@@twiggsherman3641 True but irrelevant to the conversation. Joey and Lombardo are claimed that as artist they continue to develop their technique while Lars did not because of his success. My response is to that topic. The history of Dave Mustaine is irrelevant. The riffs and music are made up by Kirk and James, however, the arrangements include Lars. He is intricately involved with the arrangements and production of the music. The are many examples of this but the biggest ( just because of its popularity) is Enter Sandman. The riffs came from a Kirk Hammett recording. The arrangements was by Lars. Lars may not have developed lightning speed. Maybe he lost some of that mojo. Still, he developed his craft for producing and arranging. Cool stuff and interesting point of view about Metallica moving on without Lars. Again because of his involvement of arranging and producing, I would disagree. Thats another topic for a different post. Cool man.

To Lars' credit, I had a few panic attacks once. Leading up to the first time it happened, I wasn't mentally freaking out or anything. One moment it was just a other normal day, and in literally 5 seconds I felt like I was having a literal heart attack. When I arrived to the hospital my blood pressure was 147/205, heart rate was 170. One of the strangest and painful/uncomfortable things ever. I can't imagine having that happen while being stuck on a plane flying across Europe.

It's when it happens the first time that's the most terrifying. Afterwards, when you realize you're only mentally affected you can cope with it. But most importantly, if it did happen there must be a reason to it, so one must focus on a healthier life style, otherwise panic attacks will keep happening and in time will turn into a physical illness.

For me, Dave Lombardo is the best drummer in metal of all time. Period. So Lars kicking it up to him by saying that really makes my day and makes me respect him (Lars) as a person more. I've had a lot of different thoughts about him as a person over the years but in Metallica I think I have to admit he's the one who started the band and he's been the visionary in terms of crafting their albums to be more dynamic and epic as opposed to just making collections of great songs. The band that makes collections of great songs to me is Megadeth and I do now and always have liked them better. Still, I can't deny the scale and scope of albums like Master of Puppets.

Master of puppets to me was a big drop in quality compared to RTL. Like they were so focused on making a bigger grander album they forgot what actually made RTL so good.

@@mistertagomago7974 Oh, absolutely. There is a note of conservatism rather than actually pushing forward on Master of Puppets. I think they played faster and better but if you ask me the songwriting was at its strongest on Ride the Lightning even with a few notable lyrics I've objected to over the years. Ride the Lightning has what I consider to be their best song in "Creeping Death" (also their strongest lyrically, BTW- a very good telling of the book of Exodus which happens to be the name of Kirk's old band) whereas one of their worst songs is on Master of Puppets with "Damage, Inc." which is just an inferior version of "Battery" also on that album. And ending Ride the Lightning with "Call of Ktulu" was obviously a lot better than Master of Puppets's ending. It was a master stroke on their part to end Ride the Lightning that way and Cliff's "lead bass" throughout the song is a testament to behold. And of course props to Mustaine for writing that. I don't know what you should think of as a person but as a songwriter the guy is almost unbeatable.

@@VolvoImpala Creeping Death is my favorite Metallica song along with Fade to black. And yeah I never thought about that but Damage inc really is a weak ender. Wonder why they ended it with that instead of Orion. Either way I dont dislike Master of puppets but theres this feeling of this should be way better to me. Unfortunately imo they've mostly gone downhill from there. I love Dave Mustaine as a music artist. I've never had any strong opinions on him as a person, but I would hang out with him given the chance.

@@mistertagomago7974 He just has this nasty habit of talking trash about literally everyone who ever was fired from Megadeth. It's unprofessional at best but since he's the assh*le in common in all of these exchanges and many of the named vehemently deny what he's accused them of I completely believe them. Jeff Young, for example, says he never hit on Mustaine's fiance at the time. By the way on the album prior to Jeff Young's tenure in the band there was a song called "Wake Up Dead" about Dave Mustaine committing infidelity. I mean talk about zero self-awareness. Does he even think to shut his f*cking trap at any time in his life? Even Kerry King can't understand how anyone can possibly work with him and I thought Kerry King was the biggest assh*le in metal before he said that. But if even he's saying that? Forget about it. It's Dave Mustaine all the way. No contest. I can see exactly why Metallica sh*tcanned him and James has to keep telling him to shut the hell up about Metallica. And "Fade to Black" is their first and most important power ballad to me because of the acoustic guitars and the fact that they didn't speed up the tempo when things got heavy. I can see them doing that to keep things thrash on "Sanitarium" and "One", but "Fade to Black" was specifically made to be different and to that end it's been their most successful. And the tune itself is just plain great. So I totally agree with you on that being one of their best.

I was there as a bright-eyed 17-year old kid. I was a Slipknot fanatic at that point and had gone to Download specifically to see them (they hadn’t long released Volume 3) and Korn play. Slayer were good - also good to see Damageplan - 6 months later Dimebag was shot. I digress, the musical landscape was a bit different back then. While Slipknot had made massive inroads into the scene by this point, they were far from the festival-headlining behemoth they are today. In 2004 they were a mid-afternoon band. It’s weird to think, but back then, Slipknot were on the more extreme end of the metal spectrum. You wouldn’t have taken a kid to one of their shows. They were ferocious maniacs which scared the parents of young metalheads. It was marvellous to see Metallica play with competent drummers and a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle to see my then-favourite drummer (Joey Jordison) with them. Great memories.

It isn't about the volume of songs, nor is it about the capability of the drummer. Joey was an amazing drummer. But Joey played Lars, Dave played Dave. This was the time of St. Anger a less than well received album and after coming off the divisive load/re-load albums. So having a drummer that is changing it up is why he is being given more credit

I love Metallica, not so much of a Lars fan. His drumming is fine, it's his attitude and "my way or the highway" mentality. The final mix on the Justice For All album is a perfect example. He is solely responsible for that shit mix on one of their best albums ever made. Dave in not only a far superior drummer than Lars, but his easy going demeanor would be like a blast of cool air on a hot summer day for all the other members. The tension he brings into a room is like putting on socks when your feet are wet. Just not comfortable.
