Slavoj Žižek: The Empowerment of the Right and the Dissolution of the Left

This video is the sole property of K.i.M. (Kunst in Maastricht) and is uploaded under CC (Creative Commons). Recorded on the 5th of November, 2011 at Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht.
Slavoj Zizek was one of the speakers at the The empowerment of the Right, the dissolution of the Left event. The public sector is facing severe economy measures. The budgets for culture, education and health care are being cut. The measures are implemented by the political right. The political left, in this period of turmoil, does not seem to be able or willing to meet force with force and turn the tide. Has the left become unsettled? Does the binary division between left and right still apply to read the current political developments and state of flux? Can the left reinvent itself and find an answer to the spreading attitude of rigidity and xenophobia?

I'm not a leftie myself, but Zizek is bang on about high culture, and his Hegelian critique of Marxism is fascinating.

As to Assange I take it that Zizek's claim is he that is being extradited unfairly based on the fact that Sweden has no law like the one he will be prosecuted for if extradited. Was he not charged with rape? If so, then surely Sweden has outlawed that as well and the extradition would be fair and valid. Zizek says that he was arrested for using the wrong kind of condom or something... If that bizarre law is in existence then Sweden wouldn't have outlawed it and Zizek's point is well taken.

    >> This is the material weight of ideology: Our [...] "political imagination" is so constrained, that it doesn't work [to think of another form or type of society]. As my friend Fred Jameson put it[...]: It's easy to imagine the end of the world or the end of time... You know: All these boring movies... [an] Asteroid hitting the earth or whatever... but it's impossible to imagine a slight change in capitalism[.] All life on earth can be annihiliated, but somehow capitalism will go on.

Perhaps I haven't grasped what you just said properly, but to be "anti" towards any race is to be racist, so for an anti racist to be anti white would result in a paradox. Also anti racists are merely against racism, not necessarily race distribution in itself; what I believe to be the core principle for anti racism is for no one to be treated in any way shape or form due to the race they belong in - in other words everyone gets a fair stake at life no matter their race - not 'white people bad'

I would say if you truly want to be anti-racist you need to remove the whole black/white categories all together except for instances where it actually is relevant. Like when leftists have a critique that “there are too many white people represented in X” I can’t help but feel they view the world entirely through race, out of all the things you could define people by you decide to use skin color and call it race. To me it sounds like you are anti-nazi but still call jewish people rats, the attempt is there but they are still using the exact same language as racists and thus perceive the world limited by the superficial color codes of people.

I like Zizek generally but what he says about domestic/international law. He claims one can be prosecuted in Texas for sodomy or having too many sex toys. This old Texas law was intentionally tested in the courts by almost forcing the police to arrest two men engaging in sodomy and then to prosecute the two men. The US Supreme Court struck down this law and would strike down the "too many sex toys" law too but no one has ever cared to test it partially because no one will be arrested for this
