When I was 19 I moved salt lake city and worked for a wonderful Russian family who had only been in America for a short time. I'm proud to say I received the royal Russian treatment and am blessed to have tasted all the treats and meals, and experienced the celebrations and well. I miss those days and I miss the family.

Boris must have some important friends coming over. The presentation looks like a 4 or 5 star restaurant, not someone's apartment. Never thought I'd see pickled beets looking so fancy. Also, I've never had bread with butter and sugar, but I imagine it tastes good. Butter, sugar, and a bit of vanilla flavoring is all you need to make cake frosting, after all.

I'm not sure if you did this but as a little slav boy growing up in Ukraine if we wanted a drink but didn't have kompot what we did was we took water, added in a few tea spoons of babushka's jam to the water, stired it a bit and BAM you have great refreshing drink that's refreshing, quick, and easy to make. And a snack we made was instead of putting butter and sugar on the bread we added sour cream and sugar. The taste is amazing and just like the butter and sugar desert it's easy and tastes very good.

Western Spy checking in. I've had the privilege of tasting both Tarhun and Baikal (and Extra-Citro). Tarhun is like a sweet, mild liquorice drink. I like it plenty, but if you don't like liquorice you probably won't--the only flavoring is tarragon extract. Baikal, from what I can find online, is made with Siberian Ginseng, cardamom, lemon, and several other medicinal herbs. The best descriptor I can come up with is carbonated iced tea. The other flavors shine through and give it a taste much more unique than your average black tea, though. Between the two, Baikal is my favorite.

Kvass is more slav. Vodka is good, of course, but true slav drinks kvass.

PiEn Podpiwek is not going to get you drunk. Good Slav know most important thing about drink is if it can get you fucked up.

For the people who wonder if those things are good. Yes, yes they are. And for the people that are wondering if we really serve them. Yes, yes we do and it's incredible.

Denis Palchak, it reminds me of childhood, when my friend's babushka's babushka made blackbread with butter and sugar on it. It's sad she passed away last year, and his babushka is an alcoholic which is sad, so he has no one to make him kompot. What's even scarier is that she made same foods as Slav eat, and she was this ancient almost 100 year old Danish woman. It shows just how much western foods have come here to poison us, specially that soft drink Coca Cola.
