Skypiea and the Value of Worldbuilding

Фильм және анимация

An in depth look into one of the greatest arcs of One Piece, Skypiea, and how it's themes and ideas support the setting as a whole despite being so disconnected.

Thoughts as of August 2022: I can’t believe I made a video on Nami’s charatcer exploration, faith, doubt, traditionalism, progress, all interesting ideas, and ended it on THE WORLD FEEEEELS REEEEEAAAAAAAAL. The analysis is solid but the end point is incredibly bland, generic, uninteresting, and clearly aimed to make the video sound bigger than it was when really it makes it dumber. Just stop the video at 6:44 lol.

Skypiea has the most satisfying conclusion of ab arc with a single punch , enel is defeated , the bell is rung , peace is brought between the two faction and cricket’s belief is validated. Its beautiful .

baciu14 poetic justice and much more. The idea that Calgara descendant and Noland descendant both simultaneously listened to that bell rung again after that their ancestors died while having as a last wish to listen to the sound of that glorious bell. Touching. wonderful. As you said the fact that luffy puch made the bell rung was important and impactful in so many aspects.

In the manga there's a cover story where Enel has some adventures on the moon that involve fighting space pirates and discovering a civilization of robots that were stranded on there. That was one of the many cover stories I wish the anime adapted but never did. The only ones the anime ever adapted where the Buggy Side story (How Buggy met Alvida and stuff), the Coby/Helmeppo side story (How Coby met Garp and stuff) and Straw Hat's Seperation Serial (What happened to all the Straw Hats after Kuma sent them away in Sabaody).

After all these years I still consider this one of my favorite arcs. It's a well-written cohesive story all on its own, and I love how it dripfeeds you various connections between Jaya and Skypiea until you form the entire picture. Also like you said it feels like such a fantastic adventure. Skypiea exemplifies what makes One Piece One Piece! The ending with Luffy in the clouds will always give me chills.

I've heard this, too, but I never really got to hear any plausible explanations for _why_ people don't like it. Personally, Skypeia was _the_ arc that convinced me One Piece was special. Yeah, Arlong Park was great and I liked Alabasta, but Skypeia was something else entirely. Like it was the first time history and the concept of how quick and easy truth can be tangled up in lies were actually brought up in the series, and while the parallels to our own history were extremely fascinating to me, it also felt spiritual in a sense. It was just beautiful. Also Enel is just fantastic and made the arc just as rewarding. Once he was introduced, it never looked back.

I just started reading One Piece recently and The Sky Island arc is honestly my favorite so far. It's really amazing how good Oda is at making stories. I feel like the biggest example of this is also the cover pages to each chapter telling a story over a volume with one image to convey a set actions happening with no dialogue at all in them.

  • @NOMVrewq

Ok I NEED you to make more One Piece arc analysis. I am also very curious of your opinion on the bigger themes of One piece such as freedom vs slavery. I feel like One piece actively explores this concept not by blindly stating how great freedom is but also by showing what freedom is not. In many instances, luffy applies the idea of freedom not just to the master slave relationship between characters, but he also applies to events like logue town and so on... he takes the simplest and most direct route and puts all his effort into it, then he lets luck do the rest. he knows exactly what is influenceable and what isnt. he doesnt force an outcome to arise like blackbeard. Another prevalent theme is teamwork vs slavery. its not the cheesy "I trust in my nakamas", but there is genuine arguments that can be applied in real life, like business settings. Simon Sinek, a very prominent thinker in the business world, has many literature with ideas that can be linked to one piece. Observation haki, armament haki, and conqueror's haki are not just fancy techniques. They are actual and very common attributes (qualities) found in historical figures. I feel like one piece is NOT just another story. Oda is trying to teach his audience how to reshape human history. The philosophy that Oda proposes to us shares similarities with the CAPM model (financial model) but adapted to daily behavior and attitude. financial models and economics are simply tools to describe behaviour and as a byproduct suggests an optimal behaviour. it teaches you when to take risk and when you cant. Plenty of times, you see characters incur HUGE cost in order to avoid risk and other times you see characters take HUGE risks to create change. I swear that there is more to One piece than meets the eye. Once we get to the void century, not only the world of One piece will change, but its very ideology will probably take our world by storm. Pay close attention to the differences between blackbeard and luffy. Pay close attention to why the nefertari family fought against the ancient kingdom even though the family does not adhere to the celestial dragon's ideals. THE TRUE STORY IS IN THE DETAILS. For those of you who thinks certain details of the story are weird, like what drives luffy to behave a certain way, or why did buggy trap luffy on the scaffold in logue town and nearly decapitated him? why did oda needed that event to occur in the story? is he merely trying to display luffy as a simpleton even though he already did that many times before? Or is he trying to use luffy to teach us something? To me, it is clear as day that Oda wants to set luffy as an example for us. just take a look at the first episode where he introduced Coby. Coby is undoubtedly a reflection of us trying to learn from luffy.

Thank you SO MUCH! I will keep commenting on your analysis videos and submit to you more ideas that you will hopefully find interesting. One piece is the only manga that I read now mainly due to the quality of its story and partially due to living by myself, education and work (but I am very passionate about all of it so do not worry :P). For the past 6 months, I have been analyzing one piece as a hobby but I kept everything to myself. My analysis do not consist of one piece theories/speculations but rather interpretation/analysis like the content of this video and I will gladly share them with you. I know your channel will grow because One Piece does have a huge adult fanbase and this more mature audience tend to be very reserved so it is hard to gauge its size. BUT that being said, I really hope that I will get more chances to interact with you.

Yeah the introduction of Luffy & Coby is alot like the dynamic between Rick & Morty. The weak and often pathetic reality that is Morty vs the ideal that is Rick. Luffy is very much the same way in that he's an ideal to strive for. Someone who willing to live his life to the fullest and go after his dream even if it means he could die. Then you have the weak and pathetic Coby too scared to go after his dream or even think of achieving it as something possible. To me Coby's character is saying to the audience: "Sure you're weak and pathetic now but if you follow Luffy's example you too could one day become someone capable of rivaling the legendary Pirate King"

Don't get me wrong Fairy Tail sucks ass, but Black Clover just hasn't had time to be as shit for as long. If you just take the comparable lengths of time Black Clover is easily worse. Black Clover is like all the lazy shonen tropes executed as slobbily as possible, but what puts it ahead of Fairy Tail is how, on top of that, it also has a ton of lazy Light Novel tropes executed as slobbily as possible. (Plus, Fairy Tail could at least be pleasurable on a surface level, Black Clover also happens to be one of the most generic-looking manga I've ever seen.)

While my favorite arcs would be Water 7/Enies Lobbies and Marineford, Skypiea doesn't falls short to that. While seemingly disconnected to the rest of the story, it's certainly the best when it comes to represent that sense of adventure and infinite possibilities in such a fantastic world that got me hooked into One Piece in the first place. I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves after seeing it receive so much hate.

It seems to me a hallmark of lazy story-telling, and wasted potential. The entire premise of skypiea is painfully generic. Countless stories almost exactly like it have been told before, and are a part of the zeitgeist or whatever the fuck the word I'm looking for is. Worse, they bring up this concept of a sea of islands in the sky, and then promptly return to the oceans below and never really bring it up again.

When I was watching the anime, I skipped Skypiea. The pacing was awful, things felt boring and random. I couldn’t take it anymore after 10 minutes of dancing wolves. Much later, I decided to give Skypiea a read. I got volumes 24-32 and started binging, and it was maybe the most fun arc I ever read. It was so funny, literally the funniest arc in One Piece. Enel was surprisingly a great villain, albeit he’s just power hungry. And of course, as you said, the adventure aspect was mind blowing. I feel like the anime adapted this all terribly, I know I wasn’t the only one to pass Skypiea. Its a shame a wonderful arc like this is forgotten by many fans as well. Nice channel btw, I subbed. Keep up the good work!

  • @AvivPirate

    @AvivPirate

    6 жыл бұрын

Actually, a friend of mine told me to skip it because it wasn't really important to the plot. Skypia is an isolated island, the villian doesn't become a recruiting one like buggy, crocodile, luccy, etc, you don't learn something new on a strawhat or meet a new crewmember and so on. for example If you'll skip Alabasta you'll miss the introduction of the shichibukai, key characters like smoker, crocodile, and ACE. 2 new members join the crew, robin and chooper. Luffy's first real struggle, first time where all strawhats fight including nami, introduction of Logia, biggest bounty pirate up until then, mr1, 2 and 3 who became really important, and the Alabasta kingdom will take a role in the reverie. But it seems like Skypia has a huge adventure theme, maybe like no other. and that's a goddman reason to check it out.

i think it says volumes about oda's skill that so many writers try to demonize science by having a character with a "scientific" mindset who struggles because of their closed-mindedness (ironicly making them unscientific and, therefor, strawman) while he nailed the spirit of science in this arc and showed why so many (myself included) think it's a good thing

Whitebeard can sing a song of this topic.... fucking filler scenes mutilated his dominance on Marineford... i could puke to this day how they scaled down his power in the anime. In the manga Whitebeard was literally in his own league during the whole arc even until his death.

Love the video and how you analyze one of the best arcs in one piece in my opinion. I would just like to offer some constructive criticism. It simply has to do with the way you speak. At certain times your words become jumbled and/or even slurred. Many times during the video I couldn't understand what you fully said. I had to rewind a few times to hear correctly. Even so, a few times I still couldn't understand though I reminded the video. If you could slow down a bit and pronounce the words with a bit more emphasis, your speech will be clearer. That is all. Your content is awesome as is. Just brush up on the delivery. I wish you the best with your channel.

I actually didn’t like Skypiea when I first Read it. But after going back and reading it and watching it a 2nd time, I started to love the Arc. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite Arc in the Series, I’m not even sure if I’d put it in my Top 5. But it would definitely be in my Top 10, It’s incredibly underrated and an Arc I can’t believe I overlooked.

I didnt like Skypiea as much as other arcs when I first got to it, it was by far the longest arc and progression felt very slow at the time. Going back and watching it, it's like a gold-mine for the crew all interacting with each other and having their own adventures, very funny and very satisfying. It's also, to date, the last time we see Robin seriously fight someone or contribute much to the crew which is just plain sad.
