You can’t take things for granted

Skylar wrote the song. She did what Gaga did for years and wrote songs for other people. But finally realised that she's better than most out there and decided to use her songs for her and not some paper pop star. Writing for someone else might lead to a quick buck, but as an artist it's probably soul-killing.

Skylar Grey originally wrote this song based on her own thoughts at the moment she was at her lowest... you can feel the emotions in her lyrics. Then Eminem's verse really adds the final touches to a beautiful song.

Skylar Grey is the one who wrote the song for Rihanna so she can't be blamed! This song is freaking amazing so congrats to Skylar!

She wrote this song and she sings it more beautiful than anyone..

I prefer this to anything, I love how quiet her voice is and so incredibly powerful, while Eminem has the louder and just as powerful voice. They are a good choice together for this song, because Eminem doesn't overtake her in this song. Beautiful :)

I saw Skylar in a coffee shop in Portland when she was still Holly Brook. Maybe a dozen people there at most. She was absolutely AMAZING. My g/f and I talked to her for quite a while after her performance and she was as nice as she was an awesome performer.

Skylar's voice is like an angel and it's made for this song. Even her live performances of this song are on point. Honestly, when Rihanna sings this live it sounds forced and like she gargled with glass.

Skylar is criminally underrated. Better than the half of popular female singers today, specifically Rihanna and Taylor Swift. But she's getting the credit she deserves.

This is flat out one of the most honest songs about a lot of relationships people are going through these days. The fear of being alone and not having someone to be there for you and make you feel normal in a crazy situation... It's a scary and dark place to be in and anyone who is going through or has been through something like this can relate to these words. But at the end of the day we are all better off alone to learn and grow, then to forgive and excuse certain behaviors or actions. This is a great version I dig it.

This is her song. Hers. And hers alone. Eminem has a heart. But like most, keeps it closed. Quite obviously he heard her hook and made it his own. Skyler creates a lovely narrative, Em just makes it too real. Because it is like that, in the real world. Heartache. That's where we are. 4life.

I think they go so well together because they both preform from the heart

Skylar vs. Ri Ri is like soul vs. pop music ... much deeper and more emotional from Skylar, her voice is really unique and with that just something else.

Skylar so much better than Rihanna... Ri Ri is a pop singer, Skylar sings it from the heart.

I love this comment section because in this one everyone knows that this is skylars song. Personally I like skylars version better, but that's just me. I know in other comment sections of this song, people are like "Rihanna made this song! Skylar you suck" Even though Skylar wrote it and deserves props for it. Her voice is more fragile, and displays the message better. But both versions are good, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I agree as well. Skylar is a great composer and singer. Just like Sia, who has written many songs for rihanna. but they like behind the scenes better. Makes sense. Sia and Skylar need to collaborate together and make a song of the century.

The only rapper who deserves to rap along such a beautiful melody is Eminem. No other rappers can give goosebumps like he does.

You say "nobody" knew her prior to LTWYL, but yet if you actually knew your shit, you would see that she created the alias "Skylar Grey" name in 2006 and releasing her debut album Like Blood Like Honey (Warner Bros), which was a fairly successful album. In 2004 under her real name Holly Brook, she signed her first record deal with Machine Shop Recordings. Very few knew of her, but non the less her following grew quickly. She just was not into the mainstream scene at this point and only wanted to record music as an art and to reflect on. As for Skylar Grey owning the rights, Tiffany is correct, but it was composed by Alex Da Kid (Alex Grant) in 2009. Neither Eminem or Rhianna own and rights to LTWYL. Might want to do some studying before you go trying to make someone look bad, because in this instance, you did that to yourself broski...

Rihanna's version was great but I love Skylar Gray's voice so much more. Its just so easy to listen to.

Skylar is just unique. Not like any other (commercial) artist you can hear on the radio. Thanks her for that.

Rihanna just makes this song sound so violent. This is alot more gentle and more of a meaningful version. This was my mom and dad's song because of their relationship, so I've known it since childhood. About to turn 16 it still is the most meaningfull song I've ever heard

This version is interesting because it seems like a middle bridge between Skylar Grey's early work as "Holly Brook" (actually really good shit) and her newer, poppier stuff.

Alex, a music producer, saw the gold in the song, and quickly forwarded it to eminem and rihanna, and a month later, with barely time to catch her breath, Skylar found the song she wrote at a #1 spot in the charts. she just sat back on rode the roller coaster to fame.

i love this song i sing it every day in my head and outside ! it helps me greave i am not allowed to cry or have feelings so i pour them into my music and singing is what i was born to do so let them people jugde me i do not care at all

This is the best version, but I almost wish the music had kept coming for Skylar's last chorus. Would've been epic.

+TheFlipize wrong there, I Need a Doctor got crazy hits and in my point I agree they used Rihanna instead of Skyler cause of what was going on with Chris, it made more sense to have her sing it with Eminem since he went through a similar situation, but I liked Skyler Greys Voice better, I would skipp Rihannas part to Ems

After the end of a 5 year relationship rife with infidelity and lies, I heard this song and realized that I must have been some sort of gluttonous masochist to stay for as long as I did. It was not a pretty face looking back at me in the mirror after that realization.
