I work in the Gig Economy and the keyword is "Gig" as in... it's a side hustle. Most if not all of us do this kind of work as a lifestyle choice, the ability to work when we want, with no obligations at the trade-off of things like sick pay. etc. I drive for Menulog full-time and make way more money than any of my friends who have full-time jobs + I can take days off when I want too, go home early if I want too. Giving us a wage means we lose that flexibility, it means people who do it as a second job can't work anymore. The unions dont care about us, they just see another market for them to make money in... and its disgusting.

@@ysomadbeats Except the majority of people who work in the 'gig' economy work it as a full time job, as they can't get any other job because the labour force is greater then the amount of 'normal' jobs, but the gig economy is unlimited.

He worked for 6 years as a Woolies casual back in the day. When they still had saturday penalty rates, significantly boosting the money you could make as a casual (but let me guess, I bet he's in favour of getting rid of penalty rates). Not sure when Just In Time delivery was introduced, but if he was working before then, he'd have had far more reliable shifts as a casual. Woolies casuals now are pretty much just last-minute call-ins for an unexpectedly large load or people suddenly calling in sick. I also wonder what his living situation was like, if he was living rent-free with his parents, then a lack of leave was no problem. Renting means you either have to work sick or injured or not be able to pay the rent. And if you do have the savings to take time off, turning down shifts as a casual is a bad move because they're less likely to call you in future.
