Skoolie Kitchen: Cabinets, Countertops, Sink & RV Stove/oven

In a matter of days we managed to build all the kitchen cabinets and drawers, attach the countertops, and install the RV stove/oven and full- size sink! Our kitchen is nearly complete! Mike chose to build European-style cabinets, for their simplicity and best use of space. We bought two 8' oak butcherblock countertops from Ikea and cut them down to length, then cut holes for our RV stove/oven and double sink, which are re-purposed. We found the oven on craigslist for $50, and the sink at Habitat for Humanity Re-store for around $30. We couldn't be happier with the results!

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1996 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty.
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry

I rebuilt a cute little camper a few years ago and this sure brought back wonderful memories. It was a tint little thing, but the more I did to it, the more I wanted to do. Put full sized fridge and took out ice box. Made all my own curtains and seat n bed coverings, added large roof air conditioner, wood trim, laminated floor, 2 awnings, etc. I still can't believe I sold it.

A lot of good will come out of Hannah’s Story, and Kyra’s as well. As it is, a three year old boys life was saved two weeks after Hannah’s death. He was very ill and doctors didn’t know why. It was my niece who told the mom to get a blood test. It was sepsis and the little man made through. I received personal message via FB from that mom, we spoke on the phone. It was then that we decided on “doing something”. The autopsy was inconclusive on where the infection started. Oh, AND we just arrived to Arizona RV Salvage. All kinds of goodies here!! 🤣.

Thank you! Ironically, my trade was a funeral arranger. I did go back to work, but found it to be more than I could handle. Hannah was misdiagnosed the day before she died. She had all the symptoms.. low grade fever, BP 85/55, HR 116 and left shoulder joint pain. I don’t have BP issues so I didn’t realize an issue and trusted the staff was doing their job. The next morning I rushed her back to the ER, within an hour a team from Loma Linda Children’s arrived to medi-fly her out of the mountain. It was within two hours when she coded, coded again 10 minutes later. That was when we rushed into her room to see the horrific sight of CPR. In addition, our 11 year old granddaughter was holding Hannah’s foot begging for Hannah “not to do this”. Had we realized that Hannah wasn’t going to make it, we would have never had Kyra at the hospital. Unfortunately, Kyra has suffered a great deal and has struggles related to this. Kyra has been 5150 twice, a run Away and more. She’s starting to get better. This is yet another purpose for the foundation and bus. The funds raised will go towards the survivors of SEPSIS, ie: financial assistance for intensive counseling that insurance doesn’t cover, funeral cost and so on. We all are so much stronger now after this life event

The real star of your bus is going to be that door. That is the best looking door on any bus. I am sure others will copy that. Is there any way you could add more window space over top of the cabinets? That space where the wires go. They build these buses for children's height an as adults, we can't see out of them without bending over. On some of these busses, there is this window between the flashing lights where the word School Bus is located. That window would be a perfect fit for adding more visibility.

  • @BussyMcBusface

Honestly, we don't have an exact cost on this but I will tell you that the plywood that we used was $56 a sheet. so if you do a little math on how much wood you're going to need you will see how quickly it can add up. However, we have custom cabinets that fit exactly to the space that we wanted versus a prefab where we would have been stuck with whatever we could find.
