I was a bathtub and shower and countertop refinisher for 35 years. For damage like that use polyester glazing putty. It looks and smells like Bondo but Bondo is made for cars and it's kind of cheesy and stays flexible forever so you can use it on a door panel or whatever. Glazing putty turns into stone practically. And it mixes and applies the same you put on a little extra than you need and sand it down and maybe give it a skim coat and then sand it down and then it's perfect. Just be careful not to get it on your hands or your fingernails because it will cure quick and you will be wearing that stuff for a couple of months.

@@BryanBuilt also use tack rags before you apply any coat and it really picks up all that dust. A regular rag just pushes it around. Before I sprayed something I would always wipe it down with a high quality paper towel with a little lacquer thinner on it and then I would tack it off with a tack rag. That way it's decontaminated from oils and stuff, like when we touch it, and then it's pretty much dust free. You'll never get rid of all the dust. It's impossible. But it won't be like a prickly pear. The way I did all these counters is just hang up piece of 9x12 plastic all the way around the room and then use paper out from the surface and just cover everything up and then I would spray it. You can spray everything that way cabinets counters everything. And it would take you one day with a sprayer not three or four. That would be torture for me. You got to get busy and hustle but I did it many hundreds of times. But unfortunately I have degenerative disc disease from consuming so much diet Pepsi and not taking care of myself over many years and just some genetic things I guess. Now my back is ruined. Bathtub and countertop or finishing is just so hard on your back. I'm sure you found that out. Eventually I stopped doing kitchens. It was just too hard on me. I use an aliphatic acrylic urethane. No primer needed. Prep it spray it walk away let it cure. You got to be real careful though. You got to have proper safety equipment you can really harm yourself with this stuff.

Hello just a thing I feel like saying. I've done this on some older and now my newer home.. A it's Brown Paper Lunch Bags floor or countertop treatment. You can add some drops of colored paint I've done plain, grey and black. They turn out amazing. Just thought I'd share, I tried it out on a few different larger pieces of wood so I could practice the technique but I haven't found anyone whom has seen them who hasn't liked them.

I have good success with Wooster Brush foam brushes! They are more dense than craft sponge brushes and can get a very smooth finish! Use fine steel wool to sand right before the final coat. Placing some press on floor tiles to the backsplash would be a great contrast addition and not too expensive!

When you added water putty to the patch I admit I actually said 'noooo!'. The pressed wood substrate soaked up the moisture like a sponge, that's why it took so long to dry. Bondo is a much stronger option, it is definitely longer lasting than water putty, it dries quickly and it will not cause the pressed wood substrate to swell. Those paints for counter tops are great for rental properties. There's also an option that adds a bit of texture, it's also very forgiving . Also very helpful on bathroom vanities. I simply added another layer of paint after each tenant departed.

Amen on the Bondo as a better hole filler. Also big box stores frequently sell damaged laminate ctops for 5 bucks. I have a small kitchen and my Lowe's always have damaged rights and lefts with chips or bits of backsplashes broken off. I was fine cutting my 6 and 8 foot pieces out of damaged 12 footers. I was all in 75 bucks for new black c-tops for my kitchen. The majority of the cost being for the professional c-tops shop cutting to length and glueing the end caps on and final trimming.

For that patch all purpose bondo - the kind you mix the white hardener into - dries rock solid in 10-15 mins. Pull the bondo really tight. 45mins to and hour later even out completely with a tight coat of MH Ready Patch. Maybe apply a 3rd coat of that in 10 mins. You want the patch at the same exact level as the counter. Sand lightly.

Use some all purpose bondo for the counter repair, it stinks but dries fast. And if you have to wear a respirator, always open the windows first. Read the instructions on the can. It doesn't matter how big or cheap the job is, safety first. Good job.

About a month ago, I did an epoxy, three coat on a bath vanity, sanded between coats with 320, then 400 wet, and a final with 1000 wet on a flat rigid block to flatten...what started out looking like a sort of orange peel from the last coat, after sanding with 1000 wet, it looked more like knock-down on a mini scale. I liked the result, though it was not planned. It felt flat and grippy at the same time. There was a corner which had peeled away from the original contact cement, so I super-glued it first, tested it and it held up very well. Now, I don't see it at all. I was going to try to buff it with a small auto buffer and compound, but decided to leave it for a while, see how it did as is for a few months. So far so good. My one regret is that I did not use a complimentery color on the last coat and create a speckled look. I think it would work.

@@BryanBuilt Used the Rustoleum countertop stuff, and now it still looks good. I did see a small area where the surface seems flatter than the rest and not sure if I missed it initially, or it has worn from cleaning...guess I'll know if it gets bigger. My gut is telling me I missed that I built up too much in that spot and when I sanded it, it removed the 'orange-peal' feel.
