Well, you wouldn't expect Esther Williams to join the Air Force, would you?

@2:42 The aquatots Swimming prodigies at an incredibly young age. Their career was cut short when their father killed one of them.

'Private Benjamin' x3, plus ripping off Fox's favorite plot: three gals on the hunt for husbands. As so often, Esther rises far above her material and turns formulaic base metal into... well, gold-plated metal. Her mischievous, good-humored playing is as much of an asset as her aquatics, though the other two are blah.

Even if Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, and Jayne Mansfield also did this movie, they all know how to dominate their beautiful attractive legs in this movie.

I love how they ALMOST had an empowering message for women and then were like “jk it’s all to get guys”!

Well, a lot of "empowerment" messages still had romance stuff, for a while at least. I've read comics from the 50s and 60s that do this too. The empowerment is definitely there, but so is this sappy romance for guys. I guess the message was "A woman can be strong AND find a man she loves". Not at all a bad message, but sometimes it was shown in weird ways (one gal in a 50s comic happily kisses her boyfriend after he literally punches her nasty ex, and she tells him that she fell in love with him out of genuine feelings, but not dependence).

@@thunderbird1921 I mean it's not the romance, its the fact that they explicitly say they only joined the WAVES to get guys.

@@rachelmcdonough1506 Perhaps, but to each their own I guess. What's unbelievable is how the fact that WAVES, WACs and other female military members continued to serve full-time AFTER World War II is almost NEVER talked about, even feminists ignore this landmark achievement for American women (multiple "women's history" organizations don't even display this on timelines or in articles). A slap in the face to these ladies. This very movie was hoped to be a recruiting aid for the Korean War (unlike in the 21st Century, they got loads of honors and tributes in the 50s).

One of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. There's empowerment here for sure, but...is getting in fights with other women over guys a really good message to young girls?
