Mame is an unconventional individualist socialite from the roaring 20's. When her brother dies, she is forced to raise her nephew Patrick. However, Patrick's father has designated an executor to his will to protect the boy from absorbing too much of Mame's rather unconventional perspective. Patrick and Mame become devoted to each other in spite of this restriction, and together journey through Patrick's childhood and the great depression, amidst some rather zaney adventures.

Just watched it this week on TCM. The funniest & most enduring comedy of all time. Saw it in the movies when I was 12 years old & loved it then. If this movie doesn't put you in a good mood, nothing will!!.....simply a gem from beginning to end!

steveb1164 First of all, you don’t know that with 100% certainty, but even if it is true, I don’t blame her in the slightest. She pretty much WAS Mame, and I think even she recognized that. That is basically her signature role. Hell, Patrick Dennis himself specifically wanted Russell to play her if it was ever made into a film or play. She made the role hers and you can tell that she put every last ounce of energy she had into it. So I wouldn’t have blamed her if she did. But, that doesn’t sound like something she would do. She was known for being one of the kindest, most gracious and charitable stars in Hollywood and she was a devout Catholic. I think she was above that kind of pettiness.

Such a classic of all classics! I remember watching it for my first time as a kid in the 60s on television during the Christmas holidays. I like when Mr Babcock exclaims "I' am going to turn this kid into a decent God fearing 'Christian' blahblah" about sending Patrick to the St Bonifice school. Probably couldn't even do that today it might offend someone's religious way. But back then we still put Christian in the forefront. Today it's all but forgot that this country was founded on Christian beliefs.

Rosalind Russell is on the (pathetically) long list of gifted screen performers who never won a competitive Oscar. A hit parade that includes: 1. All four of Hollywood's legendary love goddesses -- Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, and Marilyn Monroe; 2. All four of Hollywood's greatest musical performers -- Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Jane Powell; 3. Cary Grant -- in a class by himself; 4. Men and women with SERIOUS dramatic acting chops -- Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, Charles Laughton, Barbara Stanwyck, Lillian Gish, and Kirk Douglas, just to name seven. Garson Kanin had it right: "Forget about fairness in Hollywood. You'll find more justice in any meat market in town."

Well Cary Grant said he doesn’t measure success by awards (which can be a box office flop a failure - but hey! It’s artistic so they “won” some statue 😂) Cary measure his box office numbers.. how much he’s getting.. money IN is what matters REALLY- that’s where the people will pay for who they liked and what movies they enjoyed 🎥 🍿 was a success or not .
