Skip the Turbo? 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Tested

#KonaEV #Konaelectric
I was able to test ou the new 2024 Kona in Turbo gas models and Electric. Here's what I think of the Electric and how it drives compared to the ICE models.
EV-Specific Features
In addition to the Pixelated Seamless Horizon Lamp and Pixel graphics, Kona Electric offers even more features for an improved customer experience. Available battery preconditioning ensures secure charging and power performance in colder ambient temperatures. A new charging port door lamp helps ensure visibility at night.
Kona Electric also comes with distinctive elements, including forward “frunk” storage, active grille shutters, exterior Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, i-PEDAL driving mode, and Smart Regenerative System that adjusts regeneration according to real-time traffic conditions.
With a bi-directional onboard charger, the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) (vi) function can power devices or charge electrical equipment, such as electric bicycles, scooters, camping equipment, or even power necessities during a power outage. From the front charging port, devices and appliances can be plugged in using an available V2L adapter to use battery power when the car is parked.
The new i-PEDAL enables a one-pedal driving mode that allows drivers to accelerate, decelerate and stop using only the accelerator pedal when desired. The Smart Regenerative System automatically adjusts the levels of regenerative braking based on real-time data from forward traffic flow, optimizing regenerative braking system efficiency.

I have the 2022 model and no regrets. I get 485 km range ( 300 miles) in the summer. Winter I get 385km range (240 miles). I have driven 36,000 km ( 22.369 miles) in the past 23 month. Great price and range.

Yeah, this is the Kona to get. I have a 2019 Niro EV and it's getting 300 miles of range right now in the summer, same as the old Kona EV. This battery pack is very underrated. This is a great buy for people who want a more affordable fully-electric SUV than the 50k-60k Ioniq5/EV6 and gets similar range if they don't need AWD.

If I had a second car, I think the small battery Kona would be it for my wife’s daily as I would only have to charge maybe three times in a week at the house. 👍🏼 10:24

I have a 2022 Kona Limited FWD ICE version. Definitely looking at the EV version next year but would also settle for the ICE version again as the price could be a factor. We'll see what happens next year, since I lease, I could get the full $7500 tax incentives up front, making the EV cost the same as the ICE version. Of course, only the ICE version has AWD, and living in NJ, I may need that about 10 times/year. Either way, I get used to seeing a plate on the front grill, as NJ requires front and back (not FL), as does CA and about a dozen other states.

I live in the urban city. Like the inside and out of these especially the new size for occasional people in backseat. But, living city center in a high-rise condo, I don't have a place to plug in. Wish they would have added a hybrid to the mix.

I own both a 23’ Kona EV and a 24’ Kona EV. The new model is better in every way except off the line power. Key highlights for me are - windshield projected heads up display - size increase - new tiny front storage - V2L adapter -Love the column shifter - wife loves new 360 camera and extra space for her purse. Canadian models don’t get the power lift gate (big disappointment).

It's supposed to be 160 kW on this model. Some sources have 150, others 160, puzzling. I'll also note that although motor torque is down 35% from the gen 1, gearing is 30% more favourable, which is why acceleration is minimally affected. The softness off the line is no-doubt programmed in, not a result of the lower torque.

Thanks for your review Kirk. Alex from Alex on Autos suggested this might be the "better Bolt." Would you agree? It certainly looks a lot better to me! But like the Bolt, this doesn't have AWD. That's too bad. But I can't complain if it's priced right 🙂

Considering the fact this is based on the previous model platform it is not designed as being an EV first and then a gas car.

  • @tommydan55

They did design the EV version first and the others later. He was right. "Most electric vehicles that have both ICE and EV models under the nameplate are created as ICE-first models. The new Hyundai Kona Electric is just the opposite. This vehicle uses an electric-first design, which significantly increases the interior size for more comfort and greater cargo space in this new electric SUV. This increased cargo space measures 25.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, an increase of nearly 33% compared to the outgoing model." I'm not sure why having the same platform would make a difference in the claim.
