Skip the Overcrowded Lisbon Tram 28 and Ride the Tram 12 (Same Route!!)

Tram 12, also known as the "Eléctrico 12," is a lesser known tram that runs through some of the most iconic neighborhoods of Lisbon, From Chiado to Martim Moniz, making the exact same route as the Tram 28.
It's a must-ride for anyone visiting the city, as it offers a unique glimpse into the past and the opportunity to explore Lisbon's vibrant culture and it is not as overcrowded as the famous Tram 28.
Start your ride next to Bairro Alto, at Largo Luís de Camões, one of Lisbon's busiest squares, and heads towards the famous neighborhood of Chiado, going down to Baixa and heading to Alfama.
Alfama is the oldest and most traditional neighborhood in Lisbon, with narrow streets, colorful houses, and stunning views of the Tagus River. The tram winds its way through Alfama's labyrinthine streets, passing by historical landmarks such as the Sé Cathedral and the São Vicente de Fora Church.
Next, the tram passes by Graça, another historic neighborhood, known for its beautiful viewpoints and picturesque streets. It's a great place to hop off and explore on foot, with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and shops to discover. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Miradouro da Graça, a stunning viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the city.
After Graça, the tram continues towards the Avenida Almirante Reis until Martim Moniz Square.
Tram 12 is not only a convenient way to get around the city, but it's also a cultural experience that shouldn't be missed. The tram's vintage design and nostalgic atmosphere make it a beloved symbol of Lisbon's history and identity. Riding Tram 12 is like taking a trip back in time, and it's an essential part of any Lisbon itinerary.

For the 28, go to the end of the line at Prazeres Cemetery, it is quite beautiful and worth a visit in itself, and then ride the 28 back downtown.

If tram route 12 were exactly the same as 28, it would not have a different number. Route 28 is a point-to-point connection (Prazeres to Martim Moniz), whereas 12 is a circular service departing from Martim Moniz and passing throught some of the most iconic places of the Alfama. The circle is operated in one direction only (clockwise). What you filmed is a (partial) ride on route 28. I prefer route 12 to 28.
