First pair of long trousers was at boarding school, mid 60's, awful grey serge things with cuffs. Grandparents, mother's family, loved to dress well and so do I. They were farmers, ordinary folk. My sense of fashion is reserved old-school, inherited my grandfather's cravats, overcoats, and walking sticks. Immediately subscribed, love the show, the banter, the pointed comments. It is one of “classic menswear” myths that “classic” trousers have to be fairly full-cut and have pleats. What exactly do we mean by “classic” is, of course, a debatable question in itself. But if one looks through the history of menswear of the past 200 years or so, he’ll find out that cuts changed dramatically every decade or so. For example, in the 1820s, wider trousers were in fashion, but in the 1830s, the cut became quite narrow. In the 1860s trousers became wide again. In the 1910s and 1920s the fashionable cut was narrow, but in the 1930s pants became super wide. Etc. However, what did remain unchanged throughout all those years, was the “rise” of the trouser - its placement on the wearer’s waist. What makes modern pants particularly unflattering is not necessarily the narrow pant leg, but rather the very low rise. Men wear pants on their hips, instead of the waist. And that is what throws the balance off, makes the wearer’s legs look short and the torso disproportionately large. It also makes it impossible to wear a waistcoat without the shirt being exposed below the waistcoat. When designers will go back to higher waisted silhouette, everything will start looking much more aesthetically pleasing. Also, the cut of a trouser can be MUCH more complex than just “narrow” or “wide”. I, personally, prefer the “hybrid”, so to speak: mid-rise, relatively full in the seat and thigh, and then tapered below the knee to an elegant, relatively narrow opening. Actually, this new hybrid style is now offered by many brands and can be purchased off the rack.

Love your stuff Proff! Just started watching you guys and I already love it here. Another reason full cuts are so great is (I'd imagine) having an air bubble inside your pants would prevent heat transfer (Sun hits pants and pants on skin contact transfers it to the body thereas basically making wearing pants useless.) on a hot day, and provide insulation (trap air in the pants and heat it up with body heat) on a cold day.

We all need measurements of our 1) waistline where we actually wear our pants, 2) rise, the measurement from the center top rear waistline, down under the crotch, and up to the center top front waistline, 3) hips, level crossing the hip bones and over the widest part of the butt, and 4) each thigh, covering the widest part (and using the widest of the two). That's the "core" from which we can choose the leg taper.

I recently found your channel and love that you mentioned wearing suspenders which is something I don’t hear many so-called fashion experts mention. It looks so bad when a man wear a belt with a suit, especially a three piece suit. It distributes the line of the suit. Suit paints should have either side adjusters or suspends. All my suits are made with fish tail back and button so I can wear suspenders.

Lately a coworker and I have gone to wearing slightly bigger and I love the comfortability and pleats. After seeing these cuts and higher waist trousers I am fully on board and hope to see more appreciating this for what it is. A style choice and preference. We men should stick together and not bash things that are different or don’t understand. I think it’s a great style and should never go out of style. Great vid. 👍🏾👖

Mr. Okey thank you, thank you, indeed thank you, first of all for the fine historical education on men's trousers and secondly on the common sense approach of why fuller cut trousers are a better fit than as you call them drainpipe trousers. I personally prefer fuller-cut pants for many of the reasons you highlighted they give a more unified look to wearing a suit they do compliment your dress shoes with a proper hem, and without question, they are more comfortable to wear, tighter fitting narrow trousers are murder on the "family jewels" when sitting or walking... I recently purchased a 3pc suit off eBay, unbeknownst to me the trousers were narrow cut, at first I thought I would donate them to a resale shop, but because I really like the suit I took them to a tailor and was fortunate to have the trousers legs let out for more room, again thanks for all the excellent men's wear information you provide

All very valid points, Okey. Not sure if you specifically mentioned drape, but there is a minimum fullness required for good drape, of course. The trousers will not be in harmony with the jacket if the jacket is relaxed and draping well without disturbances and wrinkles, but the trousers are wrinkled and skintight.

Full cut trousers are not just a fashion statement, but a reflection of a man's character. They exude a sense of style and sophistication, paying homage to traditional fashion while still being relevant in today's society. Men who choose to wear full cut trousers are not trying to relive past eras, but rather, they are making a statement about their own individuality and confidence. These trousers may not be as tight or form-fitting as their skinny counterparts, but that is precisely what sets them apart. Their understated yet visible presence speaks volumes about the wearer's personality - they are not looking for attention or trying to fit in with the latest trends, but rather, they are comfortable in their own skin. On the other hand, skinny pants, or 'drainpipes' as they are often referred to, are nothing more than an eyesore. They are uncomfortable, restrictive, and give off an air of someone desperately trying to be trendy. A man wearing skinny pants is not someone who has their own sense of style and vision. Instead, they are following the crowd, lacking self-awareness, and unable to make fashion choices that truly reflect their personality. It's like comparing a first-class flight to an economy class one - the latter may seem appealing at first glance, but ultimately falls short in terms of comfort and class. But it's not just about style and fashion, it's about manners and personality. Men who wear full cut trousers are known for having impeccable manners, something that is often overlooked in today's society. They pay attention to details and notice things that others may not. They are the type of gentlemen who will not hesitate to offer their seat to someone in need. These small gestures speak volumes about their character and make them stand out in a crowd. In comparison, men in skinny pants often lack any sort of sophistication or manners. They may be dressed in expensive clothing, but that does not make up for their lack of knowledge or substance. These are the type of men who cannot name a single artist and confuse Tolstoy, the renowned Russian author, for a brand of vodka. It's clear that the way a man dresses says a lot about their personality and interests. As a woman, I would not be impressed by the expensive labels and stylish accessories of a man in skinny pants. But a 95-year-old gentleman in a well-fitted pair of full cut trousers? Now that's someone who would have my undivided attention and admiration. So next time you see a man in full cut trousers, remember that it's not just a fashion choice, but a reflection of their style, character, and manners.

I don't typically buy completely full cut trousers, but I still ensure that the trouser legs have room. This ensures comfort, a more harmonious look, and doesn't stray away too far from my naturally slim build. I feel like if I went too far with the fullness, the trousers would stand out. The minimum fullness also depends on my shoes, though. I am very tall, 6'7", to be exact, and I naturally have a very large shoe size. The trousers need to be full enough that my shoes don't stand out as much as they would otherwise. The goal is to tie all of the idiosyncrasies of my build together and, as you said, create a kind of unit.

In my opinion, suit looks good only when it's tailor made corresponding to a figure and emphasising strengths of the figure. In other words figure should not be totally lost in the suit. Then trousers should be tapered for most men and it fits perfectly for massive tighs, ending up with hem width around 1/3 of shoe length (btw. it's still golden ratio, isn't it? 😉). Anyway it's a great pleasure to listen to this gentleman, greetings from Poland!

Thank you for the video! There were some eras when trousers with more narrow legs were worn. Apart from the 1950s and early 60 they were in fashion around 1913-1925. If you look at cuts from this time, it really looks interesting. But there was one huge difference between todays skinny trousers! (Even in tight pantaloons of the early 19th century), there was much space in the upper part and they were hight-waisted! I know, because I own some original pieces. Which makes it still so much more comfortable to wear them than most trousers of today.

I must say, I respectfully disagree with the concept that full cut trousers are for everyone, but it doesn't give peaple the right to insult others for their preferences in style. As for full cut trousers, I've seen the pictures of your editor who is on the slimmer side wearing your suit, and I don't like the idea of wearing that as a slimmer man. Slim fit trousers because of how small I am, wear as a medium taper, this would be as slim as I would want. Full cut trousers are just not for everybody.

100% agree, but I have a question. Following the rule of 2/3 of the trousers width at the hem and shoe, Should the width of the trousers be 2/3 of the length of the shoe or cover 2/3 of the shoe? It is not exactly the same thing. For example, a trouser 20cms wide (40 cms circumference) at the bottom would not cover 2/3 of a 30 cms shoe because the trousers open up due to the width of the ankle and leg. A 25cm trouser (50cm circumference) at the hem covers 2/3 of the shoe because it covers about 20cm of the shoe lengthand the remaining 5cm is the opening of the trousers at the bottom. Regards from Spain!

The hem should be slightly wider than 2/3 the length of your shoes. I wear size 40, the shoe length is around 28.5cm, my hem is 21cm. If I took 19cm (which is 2/3 the shoe length), it would not open large enough due to ankle and leg. A safe fornula is: Your shoe size EU minus 20 then add 1 or 2 cm. My case: 40-20+1 = 21cm. Works pretty well.

I try to carry a smaller weapon I'd possible. I still do personal protection from time and that requires a full size pistol (Colt 1911 and 2 extra magazines). This requires a wider ( 1 1/2" to 1 3/4") belt. I like suspenders with the belt to help distribute the weight of the additional gear. (Don't forget handcuffs a small flashlight. Thanks

I believe particularly when someone is tall, they have or project a presence just by virtue of their height. A large or out of proportion lapel has a tendency to "billboard" a suit. But on the other hand, full cut nowadays looks baggy and sloppy to most other people. It’s the same as me wearing my bowler hat, I think it looks great, it fits, it’s comfy, it’s practical and it’s timeless (imo) But… to most other people it’s dated and costumey. I dont like them too tapered to where they are skin tight however i like them to be noticeably more narrow than the pleated top. Professor! Question, I wear 9.5 US shoe size, which is 10.43 inches. If I follow your 2/3 formula my leg opening should be 7 inches? Thank you for your educational videos. It provides real value in my life.

Miguel, it will also depend on your height If your feet are small for four height, then you need to factor that in and increase the dimensions of your leg opening But conversely if you’re relatively short for your legs, I would stick with the 2/3 rule

I love the way you explain this subject. I love suits and I really love your channel. I think you should open up a stand alone shop Mr. Okey because it would be great. Is there another way we can get a suit made from you besides online?

AskOkey is only online. Is there any reason you would prefer to order some other way?

mainly because I'd like to get a suit done in person. It's kind of hard to see what I'm working with online
