SKIN SINS WITH DRUNK ELEPHANT FOUNDER TIFFANY MASTERSON - NADINE BAGGOTT

Фильм және анимация

Now you know that I have very little time for scaremongering in beauty and talk of toxins and chemicals but I really like what Tiffany Masterson the founder of Drunk Elephant is trying to do with her brand, whilst we do not always agree, she is frank and honest and open and willing to discuss her infamous suspicious six ingredients which, she believes, no one should ever put on their skin.
Here she tells me what they are and why she hates them, and why she believes they are bad for your skin and the cause of nearly every skin problem.
I really like some of Drunk Elephant's products others I do not get on with (nothing will get me off of my creamy rinse off cleanser or get me onto oils sorry Tiffany) ... but there is so much to really love about Drunk Elephant that I wanted to do a brand founder interview, and you know I don't do many of those.

    It's interesting that Tiffany says she approaches things as a consumer. Well then why does their company insist on patronizing customers who say that some of their products can cause problems? I've used their Marula Oil on many occasions and it always gives me clogged pores. I only use Drunk Elephant skincare and rarely use foundation (A favourite from Coverfx which I discovered over 10 years ago while researching foundations for acne prone skin). The Lala Retro moisturizer also gave me blackheads. Their sunscreen also makes me break out. And believe me I have done my detective work trying to figure out what was giving me issues. After over a decade of trying different products, researching like crazy, and wasting money, I've finally reached the conclusion that my skin cannot handle heavy textures, including oils. I can tolerate Rosehip oil (I use The Ordinary's) without issues but Marula absolutely doesn't work for me. A little humility in a brand is not a bad thing. Always better than talking down to your customers. And maybe a focus on actual science would help their customers understand them better.

    As a scientist, I find her arguments poor and unreferenced. Some of those chemicals are proven to have the negative properties that she discusses but others currently do not. I also think that marketing this way is odd as there are many brands that avoid most of those ingredients but they aren't as aggressive or virtuous about it.

    Did I read correctly that she's on her way to being a billion $$ company? Dear lord isn't she laughing all the way to the bank. The more I'm exposed to the founder, her claims, her trite marketing and her FAUX 'woe is me' 'we're all suffering together now aren't we!' (barf. she clearly isn't) instagram account and just my own ability to critically consider the actual (not the overhyped) value of her products/ the contents therein, the more I'm really over it. The products are fine, but not revolutionary at all. I've tried it all (multiple bottles), and my conclusion is, not worth the $$$ and I'm certainly not supporting a company with that marketing tone. I use other products that are equally discerning of ingredient decks, and for less much less cost.

I started with Protini™ Polypeptide Cream and the C-Tango™ Multivitamin Eye Cream and now have almost the whole line. I'm so happy for our neighbors across the pond, you guys are going to love this line. And Tiffany, you are such a beauty inside and out. Thank you lovely Nadine for this video.

    It's a wonderful personal story and I am happy for her. However, the cosmetics world would be just fine without this brand. It's expensive and quite ordinary. I buy more interesting products at Target. Unfortunately, Stephanie made up her own science about skin care products. Sweet Lord. Being 'suspicious' is enough to legitimize this into a proper argument? Um. No. It's anti-vaxing but for skincare. Beyond ludicrous. A 'suspicious' person who, by her own admission, is not a scientist but 'trying to educate'. She makes good quality skincare, so she should just project a general 'clean' message for DE's branding as a USP if that's what she wants, but please spare us the polemics of pseudoscience.

  • @evabaxter3209

    @evabaxter3209

    It's very different from anti-vaxing because not being vaccinated puts yourself and others in danger. All she's saying is the way she designs her products is "if in doubt, leave it out" it's like a total elimination diet for those who cannot pinpoint what is making their skin react. I don't really understand what the issue is when her sunscreen products have physical sunscreens instead. She's not calling for chemical sunscreens to be banned. She's just providing an alternative for people with skin issues that they can't pinpoint the source off.

  • @maria21856
    @maria218565 жыл бұрын

    People are overreacting as they first did with Paula Begoun when she said basically the same thing (except for silicones and sunscreen). Nobody is forced to give up the products they’re using if that’s what they like, you do you! But there are studies backing up her claims on fragrance, drying alcohols and essential oils. I can understand how that can bother people that use and love those ingredients (and can continue to use them) but it doesn’t make it any less true. And for the price, yes it’s expensive, but so are many of other brands that Sephora sells or any department store for that matter and I don’t see that many people complaining about those.

I love skincare and have tried a lot of products and every time I tried something new I would go on to the next new thing because I never really saw results (actually accept for the clarins double serum I still uso it and it’s really good) anyway... DE has been the ONLY skincare I have been repurchasing for the last year! It has changed my skin for much better and my skin looks better now than it did years ago! That’s just my experience with it and I think it’s worth it! Some people say they use the ordinary and it’s the same... it’s not!!!! I tried and it’s not even close, at least it wasn’t to me. But everybody’s skin is different!

    This was really interesting to hear! In saying that, "I suspect they make you break out" Well, as someone who has adult acne and can break out, I use exclusively 'chemical' or mixed SPF's and have no problem at all. Not everyone is the same. Yes, some people will break out but to blanket ALL chemical sunscreens as a breakout trigger is silly. Some people have even managed to pinpoint the few filters that cause a breakout/stinging/reaction.

    I wasn’t a fan of this interview. Tiffany seems lovely but she is uneducated on a lot of the science behind skincare and is spreading misinformation. Her responses and explanations were lack lustre and confusing; it is testament to the fact that she herself is ill informed. This is exactly why people should only listen to experts in the field who are educated like doctors etc instead of being so gullible to the information provided by pseudo-scientists like Tiffany and other beauty bloggers. This brand is a perfect example of why overhyping online can be very problematic. She seems way out of her depth ..

I've been buying clean skincare for 5 years, and I think that essential oils will be dependent on the individual, the sunscreen is for sure killing the reefs in the sea, everyone should switch these up! And the rest of the 6 are purely personal choice. I think she can take a step back now and let people try it. X

    I liked this interview and agree with most of it. I still use chemical sunscreens only because I’ve never broke out from using them despite having sensitive skin. Not scared of parabens since nothing was ever proved about it causing any disease. Not fan of silicons or essential oils, fragrances are sometimes annoying and dyes are unnecessary. I don’t use SLS in a while now and my hair and skin loves not having them, but a chemist who once told me there’s a difference between Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. And she said “basically they are just entirely different molecules that happen to share similar names. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is too harsh and shouldn’t be used, while Sodium Laureth Sulfate is gentle.” I would love to know what do you know about that.

    I agree that DE is overpriced, but I heard so much about it on KZread, I wanted to try it. I was able to get a small discount on the littles and I ordered a couple of their kits. My skin was in great shape prior to using these products. I have dry skin, rarely break out and take great care of my skin now that I'm in my 50s. The FIRST night I used the products I broke out bad. I immediately stopped. It took more than a week to get my skin back to normal. I got the nerve to try them again a month later. This time I only used one product at a time and determined that it was the LaLa Retro Cream (so far) that breaks me out. I tried it on three different nights and every time I broke out! In the end I only love their Babyfacial (better than the Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution) and Protini. I also like the TLC Fambroos (Alpha 10% Glycolic AHA is just as good), Marula oil (Shea Terra Organics - Marula Oil is great) and the C-Firma serum (I make my own Vit. C serum). Will I buy DE again when I finish them? No, except for maybe the Babyfacial, which is the only thing that IMO is worth the price! There are a lot of clean products that don't charge a fortune plain and simple, i.e., First Aid Beauty and CeraVe. I'm over the hype.

    I could not agree more about the Alcohol in skincare. I used to regularly suffer with break-outs when I used certain products and its not until I watched one of your videos Nadine that I checked the ingredients in those products and they contained Alcohol Denat. I have since stopped using them and refuse to buy any products with that ingredient included and my skin has never been better.

    She by her own admission is not a chemist! Essential oils used correctly, like most skincare is down to the skin of the person! The only thing ‘suspicious ‘ here is her logic. If I ever thought of buying an overpriced product, it wouldn’t be DE as I don’t believe in her thinking. I think she should build the virtues of her products and not make them look good by bringing other products down. Sorry Nadine, I love your channel but she is not relatable and I now don’t trust the brand.

    I just wish Drunk Elephant would not promote encouraging the consumer to play chemist with their products by combining them. Encouraging someone to mix a retinol with their eye cream and applying that, for instance, is irresponsible. I like what they stand for but I’m not sure I agree with suggestions for application. Oh, and their prices are way too high.

Having said that l am glad the brand is easier to get now and l will buy more from the range. The two products that l really wanted was baby facial and the sunshine drops.

    Everyone is entitled to there own opinion and if we all liked the same thing then the beauty industry wouldn’t be what it is, however, my only problem with the brand and ethos is that of the price. Yes, there are other expensive brand out there, but the difference with drunk elephant is that you have to buy your full skin care regime from them to get the results they promise to ensure they don’t contain the ‘suspicious six’. It’s interesting heading something different but I won’t be buying any of these products.

    It frustrates the hell out of me when I hear someone say ‘we don’t slate other brands’. Actually you do - you scare monger people by promoting what you don’t use as they are ‘suspicious’ instead of focusing on what you actively do use. It’s a marketing tactic. In effect you are saying all brands that do use these ingredients are BAD. This holier than thou approach is insulting. If you can afford it, buy it but don’t make people that can’t afford it feel bad about the choices they have to make which are absolutely fine!

    I think it is important to choose a brand with good formulation. A good formulator will be able to use the right amounts for great results. I still love natural botanical extracts in my skincare. As for people with sensitive skin, yes they may be better off with products that are unscented just to reduce the possibilities of irritants. However, if I am someone with minimal skin issues, I’d definitely choose something that smells good. It just makes the skincare regime more enjoyable! :) Check out CANVAS beauty from Australia, I really like it!

    I will not put anyone "down" when they are doing their best to develop great products. Some of the comments on here sound like you are still in high school. Let's bully the person who thinks differently from the crowd. A bunch of followers who are too scared to take a stand and become leaders! It really is simple. If you don't like her or her products before ever trying them, take your ball and your closed mind, and go home! If anyone ever realized how childish your opinions sound and just how many do not need your negativity you may learn to keep your keep your thoughts to yourself. Have a blessed day!

    I'm sorry I disagree with her view on essential oil in the skin. Clarins have been using essential oils in their facial oils for years. Caudalie have essential oils in their facial oils too. If the clients skin is diagnosed by a qualified skin specialist, hopefully the oils won't cause a problem. Stress, pregnancy and hormonal changes and over uses of sauna steam on a spa day can make the skin more susceptible to being reactive to mildly blended essential oils for skin conditions. Love the packaging of the products, they are bright and cheery.

    Essential oils for sensitive skin is really a no go zone. I can't stand essential oils in skin care, because I have sensitive skin. Ask any good dermatologist, most would agree that essential oils are harmful for the skin. From what I have gathered, essential oils photosynthesis in the sun. It is an absolute joke when some skin care companies add irritating ingredients in skin care that is geared towards sensitive skin.
