One thing I felt compelled to comment upon is the fact that while these sketches are caricatures, and many people do caricatures and street drawings, what sets your work apart is your obvious love and respectful treatment of your subjects. You are a skilled artist who is capturing their likeness without their knowledge or consent. They are at your mercy. Yet you do not lampoon these people. You do not cast judgment down upon them. You do not mock them, nor use your considerable artistic talents to exaggerate their flaws, subjecting them to public ridicule as I have seen other so-called artists do. Instead your love for these people shines through your work. While you have made characters of your subjects, you have also allowed them to retain their dignity and their humanity. Rather than dipping your pen in acid, stripping away their armor and exposing their frailty, you have instead chosen to depict them as heroes! You celebrate their humanity by exaggerating exactly what makes each of them awesome and unique. You captured their personalities and their individual style rather than just stereotypes. You sir are a true artist. The world needs more like you.

Hi Marcelo! Long, long time no see! Wow! Cool to find you on KZread! What a wonderful video. I have found the Pentel Brush Pens online...and have even ordered them from Japan. When I was living in Japan...I purchased several dozen of those Pentel Brush Pens. The last time I was in Japan was in the mid to late 1990's. I still have some of those pens. I've just been refilling them with India Ink ever since then. I donated most of them to my daughter who is an amazing artist in her own right. I would love for her to meet you. She has your kind of talent. I was never the kind of artist that can draw the way you and she can draw. I guess my artwork is a bit more raw. If you see Don Carson...say hi to him and his wife Nadya for me. If you get a chance, give me a holler. I would love to get together with you sometime and catch up. We had so much fun at Imagineering back in the day. You are an amazing artist. I always envied your ability to capture people and turning them into caricatures. Best always! ~Blaise

Thanks so much for showing us your supplies and sketchbook. I enjoyed seeing your work and imaging the people you were watching. One thing I noticed, and maybe it wad just in this book, is that you only drew black women one way. They were all standing with attitude. None were smiling, talking, happy, sad, curious, etc. Just attitude. I found this curious because that's pretty much the only way we're portrayed commercially also. Either with attitude or as sex symbols. No other way of being in the world allowed or acknowledged. Anyway, your sketchbook is definitely the world as you perceive it and it was nice getting a glimpse into your world view. Take care and draw on.

1:17 for my exams while I was in school the only pencil cases that were allowed were clear so that you couldn't hide notes. I have used the same set of clear pencil cases for my stuff since I was in school three years ago:) It is very handy because I don't have to open it to know what's inside and I am very forgetful :p

Leda, you need to draw often, and not from a model. When you're drawing the world around you, it's not going to sit still. So, little by little your brain adapts to the moving world and begins to retain more and more information. Nowadays, I need no more than a few seconds to make a mental note of what someone looks like and what they are wearing. It's like you have a camera in your head, and you can take mental snapshots...but it's all training.

Moisty Moist, the paper is a toned sketchbook. The purpose of a tone is for outside drawing...the reflection from the sun on a white sketchbook is blinding, using a tone sketchbook cuts down on the reflection.
