Overcoming Fear - people sketching episode 16

Ойын-сауық

This people sketching video is of a couple I saw at the grocery store recently. In the video I also talk about moving to California, facing your fears and finding role models to overcome your own personal weaknesses.
~~FAQ's~~
The type of sketchbook I use is the Earthbound Cachet sketchbook. Get it here: smarturl.it/sketchbooks
The white pen I use is a White Gelly Roller Gel pen available at most arts and crafts stores, or on Amazon: smarturl.it/gelpen
Red/Blue Colored pencil from Prismacolor - smarturl.it/prismacolor
I've made two videos talking about the types of drawing supplies I use: • Video
And another demonstrating them:

I love all your people sketching videos. They helped me tremendously to keep on making art especially when I'm feeling down and dejected. I introduced some other artists to your videos too and they also perked right up. Seriously, you have some magical healing powers to your words. Anyways, because of your videos, me and some other artists constantly cheer each other on to keep making art. Thanks for all the support even though we never met.

I can honestly say watching your videos have been helping me, not only as an artist but also to be a better person. I might not have control over my body at this point but I still have control of who I am. Your videos are helping me be a positive person. I want to thank you for being such a great person. :)

Richelle, I just became a fan of Will's. I hope in the past month since you posted you are doing better, both physically and mentally/emotionally. Will is so right on so many levels. He's done a lot of thinking. I don't know anyone else's story, and mine is pretty anonymous now. But that's neither here nor there. Take care of yourself and get better. I'll be lurking around here now. Will's the one I'm looking for as a youtube mentor. Get well, really.

Very inspirational video, thought provoking. On the subject of family, I think I understand what point you were driving at when you talked about settling into that rut. Its what my father did to support his family, took a job that paid well enough to make sure we had a home, food, clothes etc. I watched what it did to him, and there were days when he would come home tired and angry. Thinking back on that, I believe that's what I was seeing; he was settled into a rut, into a pattern, a position he didn't want to be in but couldn't afford to leave (from his perspective) because of his family. I only really understood what it was about years later when I almost drifted into a similar scenario. If I had to analyze, I'd say that my greatest strength is that I can see things how they are and how they could be. From that also spawns my greatest weakness, which is that I don't like to take many chances. My wife once asked why I had so many unfinished/unpainted models and figures on my desk and I told her it was because I could see the final product in my mind, how I wanted everything to look and I was worried that I wouldn't be able reproduce that vision. It reminds me of something James O'Barr once said in an interview about his art and how, at the end of the day, he's happy if he can get 60% of what he visualizes down on paper, and how he's had to work toward being satisfied with that. That's something I haven't been able to do yet, and because of it there are so many things I either don't start or put aside after only a minimal amount of work because that fear of not being able to achieve my final vision hits.

My strength is being able to just pull things together without much hassle. I'm just good at getting results. But that makes me lazy and means I leave EVERYTHING til the last minute. But even when everything goes wrong and I've left thing right up to the deadline, somehow I still manage to pull it together at the last minute. Which just makes me even more likely to procrastinate next time. It's infuriating because I genuinely love what I do. If I could get the same amount of stuff done at the beginning of a deadline period as I can at the end, I could probably do 5 times as much as I do now -____-

I couldn't handle myself at all and I would hurt the person that least deserves. You've asked very wise question that guided me deeper in myself. You gave me hope when I almost lost it... and gave up on everything. But now I listen to this video one more time, and probably later one more time again while I'm practicing drawing being excited that I do something i always wanted to do but never had the courage. :)

This will sound depressing, but this is the core motivation to why I want to make people's lives better; Because no one did that for me. So I found refuge in music, art and stories, but not people... and that loneliness? That endless abyss that goes on for so long that it just seems to loop back on itself, faster and faster, until it feels like it'll tear you up inside... I never want to let another person experience that as long as I live, and that is why my life motto has been, for a long time, that everyone should have a shoulder to cry on. THAT is my reason for wanting to be ONE of the ones bringing positive experiences to other people's lives. Because I don't see it as something I have to do alone(with people like you and Neil Gaiman out there), but that doesn't mean I want to do it any less.

I takes a lot of strength as it can wear you down at times, but it's totally worth the effort. :)

Thanks for another great video Will! The thing about dreaming big was very inspiring. In fact, I do that a lot! But I tend to get satisfied with only dreaming! (sic!) I have no idea why it doesn't frustrate me. What's worse, I actually get relieved when somebody else puts my ideas into life instead of me! It's like "ah this great idea I have! ... oh, someone has already done it! great! now I can stop thinking about it!" I also don't handle stress well and get discouraged easily. I also dislike whatever I make so I cannot set up a portfolio ^_^" Not the best traits for an artist! I understand that I'll never be more ready to do the things I want than right at this moment, but it's so hard to convince myself! "I don't want to ruin my dream ideas with my current crappy skills!" is what I keep thinking, but it really doesn't take me anywhere. Gotta try to believe in myself more. Your videos really help with that a lot!

"Your greatest strength is your greatest weakness" SO TRUE! I recently discovered that my (relative) strength at drawing anatomy was holding me back from trying new things. I've noticed that often times it's our strengths that are our weakness, so we just need to learn how to balance our strengths and not let them become our downfall. For example, for someone with the strength of leadership, they are a great leader! But they can let it overtake them and suddenly they're controlling. For me, I have a strong gift of compassion, but sometimes it can be my downfall if I don't remind myself from time to time that I don't need to fix everyone's problems or take on everyone's problems as my own. Random thought! But, I think if you're able to identify what your strengths are are recognize that it could also be your biggest weakness, it will help keep you in check and hopefully open many doors for you as an artist-- creatively and professionally!

I have the strength of dedication to things I enjoy and sociablility (I like to talk a lot), but my weakness has to be laziness and not wanting to really try new things, I like sticking with what I enjoy rather than try something different I also enjoy being alone a lot, the type of people I need more of in my life are the type that like to try new things and are very enthusiastic and can give me that push I seem to need, in the same way a teacher can encourage their students to do more and try new things.

It's been a while since i watched your videos, i hope all is well.. I'm pumped to watch the rest of the people sketching videos.. Your skills have gotten even better man, i've always enjoyed them and your very defined at this point but its getting better, so kudos dude! I usually just turn these on and listen while i draw and then check out your drawings at the end. So, that being said your words have helped me greatly.. You are wise man, mr. terrell. You should spread this wisdom as a professor, i'd sign up lol.. I'm not sure if i've commented on your videos on this account but i digress.. This helped me a lot and i just want to say thank you. The relevance of this to my life right now is insane.. And good luck on your ventures!

This video and your "feedback" one are some of my faves. I've made some serious rookie mistakes as an artist and have walked a bit of the dark path you've warned us about. I've definitely felt ashamed and want to slap myself, but I know I just need to keep trucking to get through it. Getting good at something is never easy (mentally and technically).

cool thoughts..When I was young, many thought I would become a really good sketch artist or painter..I easily won various local drawing contests for kids..However, I decided to focus more on school and disregarded the skill in the process..Now I'm looking forward to nourish it more basically because I have all the time to do so. Thanks for inspiring me!

Hi again! I'm exactly in that track of facing my fears! It's really hard... even when I've been in the same place by many years that I've got used to (comfort zone)... but I trust than rather than get bad things, I will get more good things at the end (it's easier to say than to do :P)... but well! It's part of the growing process :D Thanks again! Have a good one!

Thank you for making these videos, your commentary is often very wonderful to listen to. For me, I am insecure in almost everything I do....I have a lot of depression and anxiety and it makes it very difficult to make art. I see other people just out of high school with much greater skills and it gets me down....but when I can forget that for a moment I really love drawing, learning new things, and just stepping into the worlds that other artists create, whether it's paintings, video games, or animation. I know that if I had just a bit of self confidence I would practice much more, and improve much faster.

My strength is maybe art, *in a way*. I have a ok imagination, I create constantly characters and universes that I would want to get on the paper, but when I try: I get it started pretty good, I give myself that, but here is my weakness: I am *very* afraid of making mistakes. I never get the sketch ready, because I am not good at drawing hair, face, hands, legs, feet and I am too afraid to try, because I know will make mistake. So I move to the coloring and lineart of the unfinished sketch, and it never gets anywhere, I am too scared to do shading, texture, lights or anything. Same thing with my guitar, I picked it up a year ago, and I am as good as my relative who picked it up almost 10 years ago. Still I havent tried playing from my head or created my own music, because I am afraid of making mistakes, even in practicing. Sorry for the long message, wasnt supposed to be this long :D
