Sketchbook Tour

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
You know I love drawing, and I do it every day. I do it because it makes me happy.I don't even skip one day. You can call it discipline, but it really isn’t. I need it.
When drawing every day, just like in life, some days are good, some days are not so great... and so are the drawings. And so my sketchbook is like my visual diary, reflecting my feelings, emotions and experiences of everyday life.
By showing you today all the pages of the latest sketchbook I filled, I hope you get inspired to also draw every day, or at least make time to do it regularly.
Make a drawing today. Then do another one tomorrow. And another one the day after. Keep going. If you miss a day, don't beat yourself up about it. make sure to not miss days in a row - make it a habit and a treat to spend time drawing in your sketchbook - even if its just a one-minute continuous line drawing.

You assignment this week:
Even if you have just 1 minute: do a oneliner drawing. Do it now. You can do it. maybe, you add another minute, slap on some color. You'll see that you'll feel better after that and that you have quite a fun drawing!
Do it again tomorrow, and the day after, and repeat it every single day this week. Some days you may have longer than a few minutes; enjoy it!

Just think, in years to come what a treasure these sketchbooks will be! Young artists need to see this as an example of a personal sketchbook that is not a performance or an audition, but rather a way of understanding the world and recording the experiences that make up a life.

I love your attitude 😊. It’s your sketchbook and you don’t care what others think of your drawings; they’re yours. Outstanding! Same here. 😊 It seems too many think they should be making full blown paintings for display at the Louvre in their sketchbooks. It’s your life you are documenting. Worried about wasting pages? Break them into 2 - 4 sections each page and do 3 or 4 little sketches. Sketch your breakfast, sketch a cup, doodle … the more you sketch, the better you become. Most objects are lines, rectangles, circles, and triangles of some sort. Enjoy!

I never want your sketchb😍😍k tour videos to end! I have them all saved in a playlist and watch them several times per week, even the ones from sketchbook skool. I have your book, which I purchased through Amazon last year. I haven’t read it yet, but am looking forward to doing so on an upcoming vacation. ☺️. Lastly, I make plans to draw all the time but never do. But, from today, I promise to draw something everyday, even if it’s just a minute. Thank you for the inspiration. ❤️

Too much fun! It appears your travels are just an excuse to get out and draw someplace other than around home. I love doing that. I helps me to better enjoy the trip. Your works are good enough to get the meaning across without dragging one into too many fine details. The way you sketch makes one use their imagination as to what is going on and that is an extra blessing for us. Love your work. Keep leaving home and showing us more of your part of the world. I know I enjoy it. Thanks again for all you do. -OkieSketcher1949

I hope you don’t mind…. I have an “ink only” sketchbook to force myself to sketch with ink only, to not focus on correcting details and to learn to “go with the flow.” I once took screen shots of you and drew your facial expressions. Some turned out okay. Even though they are not perfect drawings, I feel I captured some of your features such as your eye lashes. When I look at the page, I know who I drew (even if others wouldn’t know who it is).

I have been drawing something every day for the past 2 or 3 weeks. Some drawings take 2 or 3 days to finish though. Others are done in a day. It depends. I was also out for the past 2 days busy taking photos of more stuff to draw. I often draw from photos. But its so good to finally get outside again!! Was trapped inside for 4 days because of Dangerous smoke from wild fires. But I got a LOT of drawing done because of that too! Still I need photos and its just so fun to go for long walks to see what catches my eye so I can draw it later. I am good at drawing houses and stuff but new to trying to draw people. Especially to get the person to look like the person! Hopefully with practice I will get better!

oh my goodness, your sketchbook is Devine, I love the simple sketch vibe, and what a great tip to add the writing to the negative white spaces if you don't like the drawing. So many times I have tried to do a sketchbook when I travel and end up with only a few pages. I add way too many details to a page at a time. However, the process does seem to give me balance during overwhelming times on vacations. Thank you for sharing your journey and parts of your process.

I just keep going in the same sketchbook rather than dedicating one for a trip/travel. That might be helpful to not feel too much pressure, and also to keep going.I agree that the process of capturing things on vacation helps you take the overwhelm away and just relax in the moment.

I didn't like the Nostalgie sketchbook when I first tried some years ago coming from watercolour papers' world. It made me frustrated how the watercolours looked and the paper couldn't handle the amount of water I used. So I put it away for some time. Then picked it up when I just wanted to mess around with inks somewhere I don't mind.. and I made some really nice pieces with pens and inks and brushpens in it since then. Just turned out again is that the best sketchbook is which I don't mind to kill 🙂 Very nice sb tour from you again, anyway, my favorite is the one from the market. Really captures the busyness and movement.

Hi Koosje! Jim from Madrid, Spain (a New Yorker living abroad and fellow artist). First of all, thank you for your videos and for sharing with all of us your art, knowledge and personality... I like when I see other artists being honest (it's very refreshing when people are not "selling" you anything). Love your sketchbook art. It's very inspiring. I have been a subscriber since late last year (Dec. 2022) and, even though I don't post much (too busy with my hectic life) I enjoy very much your content and Art. I have a question for you, though, if you don't mind me asking... I already use Hanemuhle's Watercolor 100% Cotton Sketchbook for... yes! You've guessed it! Watercolor sketches! 😅😁👍 But... I have been searching for a well built multimedia sketchbook and the Hahnemuhle Nostalgia caught my eye (I love Hahnemuhle sketchbooks and they are reasonably priced here in Spain). My questions are.... What are your impressions on the paper for use with- graphite/charcoal, ink (fountain pen) and wash (light watercolor), if you need to use watercolor more heavily (I understand it's not cotton paper) will it take it (sporadically)? How is the "tooth" of the paper? I mean, is it slick, no tooth like, or dies it have a light tooth (similar to Cold Press watercolor paper)? Can both sides of the sheet be used - the same - or are there any constraints (as per one side versus the other)?. I love my Hahnemuhle Watercolor (100% Cotton) sketchbooks but I want to have a mixed media sketchbook for other "Not so perfect" sketches and using more if a multimedia array of tools (ink, pencil, colored pencils, pastel, gouache, etc.) to work on my sketches before committing to a final (more worked) sketch, but keeping a minimum of overall quality. So, summarizing in this long post... What are your impressions as an Artist on the Hahnemuhle Nostalgie Sketchbook as a daily work horse for quality sketching??? (Mainly on paper quality on both sides- I just hate wasting money unnecessarily). Thank you in advance for your (very much) appreciated input and, even though I don't post a lot, I always follow your channel!!! Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎

Again, love your channel and sorry for the inconvenience I may have caused. Cheers from Madrid! 😓😁👍😎

Hi Jim, I love Madrid! OK, so the Nostalgie paper is very smooth. I love smooth paper as I often find watercolour paper too textured. That's because I like using fountain pens, and I hate it when the pen doesn't run smoothly on the paper. Nostalgie is great for ink, and markers. Gouache too. Graphite, crayons, colored pencils. I use watercolours on the Nostalgie paper, however, if you loved working with the watercolour paper from Hahnemühle, this is a completely different way of working. The paint sort of lies on the paper instead of being soaked up, so all the "rules" you know from watercoloring, are out the window. If you love watercolour and watercolour techniques, Nostalgie won't give you the surface you need. having that said, maybe you should just try it because it's all based on personal taste. Otherwise, also look into the mixed media sketchbooks by Strathmore and Stillman&Birn. They might be more of the versatile type you're looking for. Also, you can find my book here: www.koosjekoene.com/book Order it at The Great British Book Shop to support me best.

@@KoosjeKoene Hi Koosje! Thank you very much for your detailed explanation. Nostalgie seems exactly what I was looking for, a smooth, thick paper good for pencil and ink, that can handle light washes. At an affordable price but with great quality! That's what I previously meant when I said that I love my Hahnemuhle Watercolor sketchbook, though I mainly use that one for more pure watercolor sketches, the Hahnemuhle brand is really good (value for money). You have confirmed what I was hoping for, because I usually mainly sketch using fountain pens directly (though, I also sketch with graphite and coloured pencils) but I was using Art Creation notebooks for this (well made but better just for pencil use, no inking - too much ghosting and bleeding through to the next page). In the future I was thinking if experimenting a bit with some markers, but not right now yet. So thank you very much for your detailed explanation. It was very helpful. And I will decently check the web provided for your book. Again... thanks! Cheers from Sunny Spain (and pretty hot now too)! 😁👍😎

Thank you so much for the years of wonderful content Koosje! You are such a wonderful teacher & coach. My question is this: many drawing instruction videos teach the use of construction lines as the first step in drawing. I believe that your drawing method uses a technique I believe that is called relational perspective instead. Pls correct me if I’m wrong in this. I guess I’m resisting building a pencil based foundation of cones, square & circles etc before I just jump in to draw. Can you please share your thoughts about this? Many thanks from Australia.

  • @KoosjeKoene

I have the “just draw” method. No cones or squares first, no pencil lines, and definitely no perspective lines and vanishing points. Using your eyeballs to see shapes, outlines, and directions, then translating it into lines and marks onto your paper. Embrace the wonkiness. It’s a drawing and nobody ever said that it has to be “accurate”. The funkier the better. Play, explore, tap into the childlike mindset instead of thinking about all kinds of “should a”. That’s my method in a very tiny nutshell.

I think you mean the luminance pencils and the Neocolor crayons? They are completely different materials, plus choice of materials is very personal, so I couldn’t possibly tell you which you should choose above the other. Maybe just buy one of each (you can buy them by the piece) in favorite colors, and experiment. Maybe combining the two might even be the answer for you.

I like how you add a number on the corner of the page. Does the number mean the date you draw?

Where do you get the stickers on your sketchbooks? I want one of your yellow "Everything's interesting" stickers. ;^)

I had them printed and people who take my workshops in person get them. I don’t sell them online

I’ve always been intimidated drawing people and don’t know where to start. Every time I try it is ridiculous. Animals and landscapes no problem but people? Yikes.
