    Haha, I think it's actually pretty rare to take less than a few months with a sketchbook! I can think of quite a few professionals that have taken several years just to finish one (myself included!), if that's of any comfort. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment :)

    Your sketchbook is gorgeous! Even the parts that didn’t go as planned, there’s so much beautiful just in the attempt. And I really love how “active” your sketchbook is. Even though it is beautiful, that feels like a lovely result of you trying out things and that functional aspect is something I value in my own sketchbooks.

    Sketchbook tour videos are my favorite! I wonder how you manage to finish it. Do you draw only when you feel like it or do you dedicate a specific time every week? I often start drawing in my sketchbook but end up to never finishing it. I really love your simple shape drawings and the post-it of Sumi of course! 😘

    Good question! I think it's sort of a mix of both - sometimes I'll set aside time in the morning or afternoon to spend an hour in it, but sometimes I'm too overworked to even think about sketchbooking haha. I also like to take my sketchbook with me wherever I go, so if I have down time I'll doodle in it. You're not alone, though! Finishing a sketchbook is running problem for me too, though, I have quite a few sketchbooks I've never finished.

    What fun! I do love your landscapes, wish there were more. All of your sketches were so well done and entertaining to the viewer. What an outstanding visual memory you have to be able to recall dogs and people that you saw during the day. You inspired me to start sketching more instead of turning on something mind-numbing on Netflix. Thanks so much for sharing this part of your artistic life. Have to add that you created such a warm and interesting home, very inviting.

    Um, stunning! I wish this was an art book for sale. Seriously. Every spread is gorgeous, love your panel pieces, they’re just so cool with all the different elements and patterns and yet it all works. All the observational drawings are beautiful, how do memorize how the dogs look?! That’s a true skill😂

    Thanks so much! I’m not sure how I memorized them 🤔 Maybe just memory accrued from studying in the past? But then it gets tricky when we get to mutt territory!

    Lovely sketches! I especially like the way you use two colours across the street fashion spreads. I tend to only work in natural light for that exact same reason although I thought the purple in her hair looked good.

    I truly loved every second of this video! It was sooo chill & sparked some new found inspiration for me, because I just realized... I actually have the exact same sketchbook :D I never thought of using paints in my "little one" but I really want to try now & I'm also going to try out doing stylized panels + limited color palette

    It was great to see the spreads 🎉 I have a couple of questions!: 1. Do you roughly sketch with pencil and then ink? 2. How do you get the outdoor sketches so right? 3. I've never done sketching outside in street or cafe, any starting points/ tips? Thanks so much ❤

  • @kesalt

    @kesalt

    Thanks so much! 1. I tend to just ink rather than using pencil first in my sketchbook. It took me a lot of practice to forgo the pencil, tho! And just being comfortable with mistakes happening. One thing I've seen James Jean do in his sketchbooks is that if he makes a mistake with pen, he'll just draw over it, often creating a layered and multidimensional effect. The more you sketch the more confident I think you become in your lines! 2. Haha, I'm not sure that they are right, but I think it mostly comes down to a lot of practice and being willing to make mistakes / draw things that don't seem correct but make sense in the context of a scene. 3. Find a place you feel comfortable, then take your time! If you're just starting out, pencil is a great tool. I find that it also helps to start with a focal point or a main subject and build out your shape relationships from there! Hope that helps :)

    absolutely love the studies at 4:11 !! I've been thinking a lot about using photos without permission for reference (especially with plein April going on, which I love and so much amazing art is made!!) since I'm an artist myself, so I'm writing this comment to ask if u have any thoughts about this! like do u always seek out free use images for studies? or does it not concern you?

  • @kesalt

    @kesalt

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you! Good question. In so far as references go, I hear your concern and that is a worry at the back of my mind, though I tend to think working from them is okay when practicing in a sketchbook or just doing a study, esp if I can cite the original photographer. Stylistic forays seem to be a gray area, but reproducing a photograph realistically in a different medium and then selling it as a print or merch is where I would definitely draw the line. It does merit discussion, so I’m glad you asked!
