***** I draw in it almost every damn day! Mostly to practice but it's still full of crappy stuff and things I don't like. To other people they're good but I'm HIGHLY critical of my work so what I see may be different from another person's point of view.

Same here! Like I know that people are going to want to look through my sketch books, and if its not perfect, then I'm kind of embarrassed that they are looking at artwork thats not at my highest potential. But thats the process of being an artist 😄, i gotta tell my self that more often

Maybe you should start out simple, start with a light sketch and work your way up. My second sketchbook is a lot higher quality than my previous one, which is why i used this method to ease me into it. Eventually you'll find the swing of things and, hopefully, you'll start to make stronger pieces. Even now, a few pages in, i get nervous drawing or painting in it; I still have a long way to go.

And now my sketchbook looks shitty, but I got over it :,D idk, maybe it helps to buy a cheap book, so you know you didn't "waste" too much money?

After a Video on KZread, I don´t remember which one, I started to make my own sketchbooks. Just buy a long reach stabler and use the paper you want. It´s kinda creativ too, because you can design it with shaped corners or give it a special shell.

  • @inkajoo

    @inkajoo

Use loose paper for a while. That's what I've been doing. Then you can just throw away or archive what you hate. Put all the good stuff in a more prominent drawer and let that be your "sketchbook" until you feel practiced enough to have fun with a real sketchbook.

  • @forgetmenot7564

These didn't seem fully adhesive either? Anyway, you can take a look on ali express, they have AMAZING stationery and amazingly cheap! They deliver from China and it takes a lot of time to arrive, but with almost everything the shipping is free! I have yet to order - from reviews and experience of close ppl it's safe :) it's basically a huge online 'market' with many many stores, selling all sorts of things. But ohhh the washi tape, the notebooks, the stickers...

man I wish I'd had this advice hmm about 35 years ago. I'd be a much better artist if I hadn't spent years feeling like everything in my sketch book had to be display worthy. I'd buy supplies but feel like I was wasting them if I wasn't creating great stuff and never use them. It's only been in the past few years that I've really felt free to mess up and not like the stuff I do and learn from it. Honestly artists like you and a few others not only inspire(d) me, you freed me. Maybe too late for a career in art, but not too late for a life of art.

magnetic few years ago I paid to someone to make a really big notebook for art school, with hard cover. it costed me really cheap. i never used it. One day, my sister, who likes to illustrate found it and I told her to keep it. She loved it and improved her art a lot. It had like 250 ledger pages, 8x11. She told me when the pages run out that the fact that was so big made her feel like she wasn't wasting an expensive sketchbook in unimportant things. So in her birthday I paid to make her a new one, this time with her artwork on the cover. You can ask for this on any printstore(?) I don't know if this is the right term.

I didn't know that people made "aesthetic" sketchbooks until I started watching artists on KZread. I've always just used mine for everything from silly drawings, to concepts, to full-blown detailed paintings with no sort of "narrative." I'm glad you encourage using them this way too. I might try a more organized sketchbook at some point as a challenge, but I generally like to just do what I feel like in a sketchbook.

It's really nice hearing this from an artist I love so much. Honestly, every time I see multiple beautifully composed sketchbook pages on instagram, I just think to myself "why can't mine always have pages like that?" It really is easy to forget that other artist plan things out too or that a page you really love just resulted of dumping a lot of ideas onto a page. It's so easy to make yourself believe that everyone but you has a natural gift and can just whip out amazing art without study or practice or preparation even though we all know that isn't true.

A company I know looks at their candidate's sketchbooks rather than their portfolios. This is because the portfolio is what you want people to see but your sketchbook is filled with sketches that is raw and honest and expresses who you really are as an artist and I think that is a great philosophy to have.

I have 4 sketchbooks in my room and I do not even touch them because I am terrified of making even a tiny fold on the corner. I realized that that's the point of sketchbooks. We do something to them; see the art of it, regardless of what you do to it. It's about the explorations and adventures you go through when you write, draw, doodle, whatever. I have never been this enlightened before. This video is very eye opening and lovely. And for that, thank you very much. ❤

in fifth/sixth grade, i had a sketch book. I used it for school notes, normal notes, stories, oc ideas, drawings, and it was amazing. I ripped it and tore out pages, and then i put it away. I was looking for ideas for my ocs and i remembered that sketch book. I rummaged through my art, and found it. I saw how amazing it was, how full it was. I dont draw as often anymore, I've thought that I'm not good enough and my motivation is gone. And then now i found this video. Thank you. You helped remind me how to draw with happiness again.

great tips. many artists show their perfect sketchbooks and make it seem like a sketchbook should be a flawless piece of art. when it should just be a fun tool for trying stuff out or doing art without thinking too much :)

I've seen so many sketchbook videos lately, but this one is hands down the best one and has the most useful tips!! And it felt nice to hear that I'm not the only one starting their sketchbook randomly. I usually work from both the end and the beginning, and then fill out the pages in between :)

"The point is that you still made a beautiful thing," is such a powerful sentiment, and I really appreciate you saying something like that. I'm often afraid to create fully when I'm on my own, and I feel like to be a "real artist" that I have to share things and share things and share things until I've got nothing left, but hearing that said so serenely and eloquently really... I don't know. Changes things. Thank you!

Because it just puts pressure on our shoulders when we make something that might please others. The way you said them, opened my eyes. I can be free, i can be raw, i can be authentic. I can be me. Thank you so much Minnie Small.

I love how you are an artist in such a true sense. You don't deny that despite being good (exceptional, even) you don't deny that there are those certain things that knock the confidence out of you. Hearing you acknowledge and accept this is refreshing, so much better than the constant stream of social media positivity!

I do it because the materials on the right side always stain the left and make it unusable. I don't really want to spend all that time on a piece if it's just going to be covered in pencil residue and paint from the other page. I do feel like I'm wasting a lot of paper though.

Yes! Someone said it! I feel a lot of sketchbooks tours that I've seen on KZread are always the ones with the perfect spreads and everything is polished and clean but as inspiring as those videos are they can also set a standard that makes creating in a sketchbook too intimidating. I have one sketchbook that has really nicely draw things and well rendered art but I have 2 other ones full of sketches overlapping others, pages missing, rips, scribbles, frustration, and compete non sense. I understand why anyone would want to show only the good one but it's also important to have videos that make you feels like those other sketchbooks hold just as much value in the end. Thank you!

Tip: don't cover up. Face your mistakes, own them, be completely comfortable and confident that nobody (not even you) is perfect, and revel in the progress you've made because you never gave up.

  • @minniesmall

I think the occasional coverup is fine if you find your mistakes are holding you back from progressing in a sketchbook. For me, to be completely comfortable and confident is much easier said than done, but I suppose everyone is different.

This is honestly so beautiful. Your voice is so relaxing. I've always hated my sketch books because they always look like sketches and I've seen so many sketch tours on KZread and seeing these amazing works. And you're 100% right. It's for our own improvement. And I just really need to think that it's for my own use. I've been improving and I've noticed but haven't been practicing as much as I'd like. So thank you for inspiring me a bit more to actually mess up my book. With practice pieces and better quality. It's just so nice to not stress about making everything perfect

Thank you for this! I just bought a new sketchbook after your 30 Ways series ended bc it filled me with so much inspiration, but I have to admit it was a little daunting to start. I've never committed to filling a sketchbook, & I think a lot of the reason for that is bc I was putting too much pressure on myself for everything in it to be display worthy. I'm finally at the point where I want to make a proper effort to improve & grow as an artist, & your videos are probably the biggest reason for that, so thank you!!
