I love this video. As much as love and encouragement is essential sometimes you need to kick your ass. I think this is a fundamental message. Like a musician, its about expression but if you can't play the instrument you can't express yourself properly. The hand and eye are our instruments, they need tuning, you need to learn the technique. Only then can you express yourself the way you want. The more you experiment and learn the more tools you have to expand your frame of reference in creativity.

Not just art. Its good to have books of artists you like but buy things like landscapes of Venice, Cityscapes of New York, Fashion of China, anatomy etc...Things that you can do studies from. Not all of us are pros, we can't go a week to to draw from life or hire a model. We have to make do with an hour at night after work and books are great outlets. Of course you still need to draw from 3D but practicality wise books provide a broader scope

It's really helped me. I've bought art books that are a collection of artists for a certain style or medium, art books from artists I really like, anatomy and gesture drawing books, and even books that have just photography that inspires me to draw.

Does it really affect your style that much? what sort of books are the best? Anatomy? lanscape?

Danio start with with ones you're most interested in, it'll help you study harder. Then, either when you feel confident in that first thing or are ready to take a break from it (or have noticed a weak area in your skills you want to improve) move on to a new topic. They're not all totally separate either, so eg if you're really into landscapes reading about colour theory will help you nail the tone and contrast, or if you're into fashion illustration researching pattern and surface design will expand your visual vocabulary 😊

Its not just about style, its about range. How much do you see a day? What can you sit down, look at and draw? Books expand your ideas, open your mind to things you don't see in your everyday life. Personally I love vibrant colour but I have to say my day to day life is pretty drab.
This video came out at the right time for me. I've been staring at a blank page on my sketchbook for days. You know when you feel like creating something but somehow, once you start doing it you're never satisfied with how it turned out? Yeah, hate that. But I remembered something you said in your past video about "never underestimating the power of taking a step back, having a rest and come back with a clearer mind." Because it was then that I realise the last time I actually went out of the house for leisure was a week ago. This is because I've been so caught up with my uni portfolio, focusing only on the deadline and not giving myself (and my brain) a break. I've also been trying to find ways to improve on myself but never had the courage to try new things. But not this time. I shall try and take that leap of faith and commit myself on improving in 2017^^ Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Just one final thing, I love watching your videos and the things you talk about are always so relatable. May all of us succeed in improving ourselves to become better artists! Cheers :)

I agree with everything you said in this video. No one is born with it, you just have to work hard at it! You are an amazing artist
ive been binge watching your vids... the best part is actually your voice, its so relaxing to listen to you qhen your speaking which ease the part of learning...
i LOVE you minnie! such a beautiful way of describing what we do and how, amateurs and masters alike.
I love the way you talk about art and creativity, and I feel like it's done in such a way that it can be applied to all the arts, be it music, dance, literature, etc.
oh my god this video is so good. i not only love the advice (which btw is so apt and inspiring) but the machine thing you did on the side is just so unbelievably cool. super bomb.
I know that most people already said your voice is very soothing, but for real it is!! Whenever I draw, I go play your videos just to be inspired and hear your calming voice. I'm not being creepy, however, sometimes when I'm in a mood where I don't want to talk to people, I listen to your voice then fell asleep. Lol Keep it up! You're very helpful to aspiring artists!
I've been really inspired and really productive with my art lately because I've been doing all these things, so I think that watching this video can be soooo helpful for people who are stuck with their art (including myself to remind me what works when this productivity stops hahah), so thank you for making it!
You have bin such an inspiration for me lately, especially the sketchbook series. I've been drawing all my life and am a designer/illustrator professionally but you're really helping me out. Thank you Minnie
what a beautifully crafted video! from the aesthetics to how you spent so much time writing out the script, I really appreciate it all :)
your advice has definitely inspired me to be more committed with my art work , i love your mind set and your ideas

Thank you so much for this video. It was so soothing, positive and real. The most helpful kind of "how to get better at art" video I've watched, and I've watched a LOT of them. You are so chill and easy to watch! It felt like real advice from a friend. Thanks again! :)
You took the word right out of my mouth. THANK YOU!!!
I get an hour and a half break at work so I tend to draw then. The good thing about that is I usually either start something that inspires me to continue when I get home or gives me an idea of something else to try later that day when I have more time.
I love your channel so much because despite preferring everything to be perfect and organized, you still have the courage to step out of your comfort zone :)

love your insights, and positive attitude. keep it coming!
Thank you Minnie, I'm really in a rut right now and I almost felt (still feel) on just giving up on art because... I don't know, I've been comparing myself to better artists and really been to hard on myself, and that has really discouraged me from even trying to develop my artistic skills. I got burned out I guess. This video really lit a spark that I feel might get me back on track and thank you for making it, things don't feel so "hopeless" anymore.
I love you and your channel so much!! you're so pretty and your voice is so soothing, I adore your art and you manage to let your personality show through in your lessons and it's absolutely beautiful!
i feel so calm just listening to you. i appreciate your videos!! thank u ~

gosh, i love your videos they kinda help me and inspire me so much. And btw your voice is amazing. love and thanks to you
I love your voice, you sound so calm!
I love this video so much.
I really needed this video. Thank you!
I was good at sketching when I was a teenager. I haven't picked up a pencil since starting and finishing uni and grad school. Definitely getting back to it. I remember rushing back home to complete my sketches they were really good actually.
Your voice is very calming and it gives so much positive energy.. You are a inspiration to me and I love drawing but its not something im very good at but drawing is my way of getting away from reality for a few hours Like a book..
Thank you for this video, I believe it will help for all kinds of artists, not only those who draw!
I love love love your videos - thank u for being an inspiration 👍
Istebrak is the absolutely best channel for learning in my own opinion
this was rly insightful since ive always been lazy about practicing every day. im gonna try to b more commited to it from now on
I can never seem to access the inspiration part. I'm quite good at copying art, like outline art and stuff like that, but I can never get something in my head and then draw it. I am also really bad at human features, or any kind of properly realistic drawing or proportions.

Faith Jones me too. I find however that I get ideas when I make something for somebody. Like presents for mum. You have to think about what she would like and what would be fitting and then ideas start coming. :)
@faithjones1193
7 жыл бұрын
F_ For that sort of thing I am okay, like I can think of something to do but then I have to search for the actual image and copy it for it to be good. Like for my dad, I did a polar bear card, for mum I have done a dirty dancing card and for my little brother and sister I have done various characters and drawings but even though I have the inspiration I can't get it down without a reference image.

I have an inspiration issue as well and I realized that I normally get ideas from listening to songs that I admire or enjoy and try to translate their message or theme onto paper in any way possible. It is usually challenging and never turns out the way I want it to, but hey it gets the pencil moving and once it does, you can never put it down
@faithjones1193

-=Skatertails=- I often get that visualisation when I listen to music etc but I can never seem to draw it out the way I see it
Thanks Minnie :) I agree with everything you said. I find myself unintentionally veering away from things that I know benefit my artistic development. For example I used to study from masters like Rubens all the time and that is a habit I need to get back into. So thank you for helping! Your videos are always so grounded :)
THIS IS SUCH A WELL MADE VIDEO!!! YOU MAY BE REALLY REALLY PROUD OF YOURSELF! I always love your video's, 'cause they help me as an art-student to really develope a style and just to get better at drawing and painting! I follow the 30 ways to fill a sketchbook and I love it! I try new things that I don't get to try at school and my creative mindset grows also. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THESE VIDEO's! Lot's of love and support from BELGIUM!
