Sitka Gear: Why I sold my Duck Oven Jacket

I got a rover down jacket early last year for everyday use and duck hunting. I was disapointed at first. It did not look warm and fitted pretty snug on me thus limiting the layering options. However, after a full season of duck hunting and a cold Canadian winter, I am blown away by it. It’s crazy warm for the weight, it repels water like a champ and you simply don’t feel the wind when you have it on. Little layering is required with this jacket. Heavyweight merino or heavyweight hoody and your are good to go in 0 degree weather.

Loved the video! I have the duck oven but looking back wish I would have got the rover down jacket. Seems very similar in warmth and much better for every day applications

I purchased the duck oven last year around this time. It’s still hanging in my closet with the tags. Even though it did get down to 26 degrees. I much rather my light weight T, grinder hoody, kelvin vest, Dakota vest, delta wading jacket. The mobility is unreal. I appreciate your videos. It’s helped me with purchasing everyone of my pieces of Sitka. Keep on keeping on.

Duck oven is the bomb! Price, weight, and warmth are unmatched! I have had the DO for two years and it meets all my needs. I wear the delta pro wading jacket over top and I go kill ducks. Just my .02.

I use the duck oven while wade fishing in temps below 32 degrees. Often below 15 degrees. It keeps me incredibly warm. Dakota hoody above 32 degrees. Both are two of my favorite products and I have most of the Sitka lines... The ambient jacket and the duck oven are nowhere near equivalents.

What version of the duck oven is this? I bought a duck oven jacket or what I believe is duck oven but mine does not have any of those upper wader pockets or fleece in that lower portion that is supposed to be tucked into the waders. It is a different material and similar to the outside part of a Sitka Jetstream jacket.

Couldn’t disagree more, but you sound like you use the wading jacket on every hunt. I only use it when raining so I don’t consider the Duck Oven a mid layer like you do. I also would never use the ambient as an outer as there are far better options IMO until it’s made tougher. I may would use the rover if it’s warmer than DO but you never said one way or the other, which leads me to believe it’s close so I would stick with DO for the optifade. I mean no offense, just stating my preferences. Thanks for the vids I’ve used them in making (or not making lol) many purchases.

Thanks for the information. I'm not sure I could ever get rid of my duck oven. What shirt is that your wearing during this video?

It’s called the Front Range Snap Fleece. I don’t think they sell them at the moment. He doesn’t respond much I guess he just mostly wants to do videos.

I sold mine because the new version doesn’t hold a candle to the previous one. New one was way too bulky in the chest and didn’t fit the same

Gonna have to disagree a little. Ambient and the duck oven are completely different pieces. Ambient is strictly an active insulation mid layer piece and not good as an outer layer. Duck oven is not a mid layer in the slightest, it is a static insulation outer layer. Just because you put a shell over it doesn’t make it a mid layer. The problem with the rover down is that down loses all insulative properties when it gets wet. A very good jacket but that is a huge point you didn’t mention. If anything the kelvin aerolite would be a better replacement/comparison. I still think the duck oven is the king when it comes to duck hunting jackets. It’s a purpose built jacket that does that one single purpose extremely well.

I agree warm when wet is something that’s important to me. I find the Kelvin to be more comfortable/versatile when layering than the duck oven

I sold mine because it is LOUD. It's like wearing a plastic tarp. Wanted for deer hunting but this is for deaf ducks I guess.
