Sitaram Yechury on caste, China and ‘anti-Dalit’ communists | What’s Your Ism

Amid the ongoing election fever, the Left parties are looking to regain their lost ground. But what are the limitations facing the Red Flag? Why do Indian communists share a difficult relationship with the anti-caste movement? And what is happening in the international communist movement?
In this special two-part episode on What's Your Ism, Sudipto Mondal speaks to the two tallest leaders of the Indian communist movement - Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and D Raja, general secretary of the Communist Party of India.
In part one, Yechury talks about his anti-caste assertions, and confronting caste in his Brahmin household by cutting off his janeu or sacred thread. He also sheds light on the Indian communist’s relationship with the anti-caste movement, laal-neel alliance, and global affairs.
The Marxist politician also speaks about Ukraine war’s connection with India, the commonalities between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Russian counterpart Valdmir Putin, “akhand Russia”, the international communist movement, and his trip to China.

I think the point he was making about theyyam has a small point in it. There is no untouchability there as the article has claimed. All people watch the ceremony together , spend the time and many times night together in one area or shelter, eats common food together and the “god” or theyyam who is usually from a scheduled caste or tribe background is bowed to and he gives blessings to all alike. So untouchability is not there for sure . But due to the historical development of theyyam in the prebritish “feudal” era of kolathunadu the ceremony of the theyyam is engraved with caste hierarchy. The theyyam is usually from scheduled caste or tribe sections , the velichappadu or poojari of sort of the kottam(the place of worship) is from theeya caste(OBC) and the conductor of the ceremony(owner or financier who owns the kottam and the ceremony etc) is from upper castes many a times like nair or namboothiri. Now a days many kottam has become public property and that direct ownership has gone but still families have their kottam and theyyams too . In the songs and ceremonies of theyyam the past story on which that theyyam is performed and narrated which contains stories of struggle and oppression many a times of oppressed sections. But songs also definitely allude to the past hierarchial relations of feudal times . It sings eulogy of the owner family etc and addresses separate castes separately through the recitals with particular titular name for each . Hence caste hierarchy and reiterance of that is part of the ceremony and has not been disturbed much even if communists are doing the same. But on ground apart from the ceremony nothing untouchability will be seen . On the whole actually slowly the ownership is slowly getting public . Change is slow and artificially trying to create a sudden change to age old customs in this era of hinduthwa may be counterproductive and will lead to the progressive hold of theyyam in malabar to regressive elements But anyway holistic discussion on this should happen. I think yechury donot know the specifics of theyyam . That is why he did not address this issue directly

Hi Sudipto Sir, I think Comrade Yechury was fuming towards the end when you raised a valid doubt 1:00:40 about the land reforms in Kerala. He wanted to question the veracity of that finding and stated it to be untrue. As a person who enjoyed this discussion, I would have liked it even further if you had pushed him a little bit more on that point especially with respect to Kerala. Families of people like me are living examples of the shortcomings of the land reforms, where in we the Dalits are still ghettoized in our 2 cent and 3 cent colonies. So its not untrue. So much for the economic upliftment, I guess. However, I enjoyed the interview otherwise though. He's a good person to listen to. But his party and the Left movement still needs further course correction on the issue of caste - class struggle. That's for sure. Looking forward to the interview with Comrade D Raja. Thank You

Even today only left led government in kerala aware of importance of land owned by dalits and adivasis. Do you see, even today , there has been distribution of land and land titles in Kerala. Name a one ambedkarite movement which talks about this even today.

left couldn't do the land reformation as it wanted because it was ousted twice in the process. Congress manipulated the system by "Ishtadana bill" which allowed the janmis to write off their lands to their relatives and friends, thus playing with the land ceiling. however, it was far better and could end the feudal relations that other states in the country could never implement.

Good discussion. I think the mainstream media journalists beed to learn from such interviews. One point, to investigate and arrive at conclusion that untouchability is still practiced in kerala, it is either a highly motivated reporting as Yechuri rightly mentioned or an unfair sampling of the candidates for the report. Such reports and quoting such reports will only help to distort the truth and take away the attention from real issues.

Socialism will never work in India , chiefly due to its diversity and abundance of natural resources, same goes for sub-saharan Africa. South Asia and Sub-saharan Africa will remain the bullwork of respect for indivialism, socialism or communism here will inevitabely result in overbearing oppressive power that will soon get a color of demonic unity. That will work only in situations where social camaraderie if needed as was needed in Bengal during post partition situation but that will not survive long. Socialism is naturally suitable for places which has a monolithic society and is scarce on resources and in those places the differnces between socislism or nationalism or organised monotheistic deism will hardly create problems or competition between them as any of those will be suitable to solve problems. In south asia and in sub saharan africa usually it will be diversity and recognition and respect for that which will keep on ticking. Sooner or later socialism and communism will also start becommig untenable in middle world countries like China too.

Massive military aid provided by Americans to Soviet Union 3. 10s of millions killed in gulags and labor camps by repressive soviet regime 4. Millions killed by Mao’s cultural revolution I always used to wonder why do I find communists in bed with Islamists ? now after watching this interview I have come to realize they both are two sides of the same coin. Both rely on mass killings and intimidation and want to establish their form of establishment through out the world. Communism is a failed system and currently a handful of countries are clinging onto it and soon even those will turn to democratic , free market form of government.

But Yechuri adding his economic aspects with annihilation of caste. This communists never realize the truth that Ambedkar explained. As Dr. Ambedkar stated, "Turn in any direction you like, caste is a monster crosses your path. You cannot have political reform, you cannot have economic reform unless you kill the monster"... I wonder how the brahmins became the leaders of communist parties. Ridiculous. That is why they never going to accept the theory of caste annihilation stated by Ambedkar.
