Bhimrao Ambedkar’s iconic interview from 1955 | Archives | BBC News India

Bhimrao Ambedkar was the architect of India’s constitution and the undisputed leader of the Dalits (formerly untouchables), who suffered from their lowly position in a harsh caste hierarchy. He gave this iconic interview to the BBC in 1955, where he discusses his differences with the revered national leader Mahatma Gandhi.

    Actually it was Gandhi who suggested Ambedkar for inclusion in the Constitution Drafting Committee and the First Law Minister. There were misunderstandings and miscommunications and disagreements on various issues but both were significant leaders. Ambedkar's main issue was doing justice to the untouchables and other under privileged sections of the society. However, Gandhi had so many other issues to handle and to manage them even if he were to believe and concur with Ambedkar's stance on various issues, it might not have been possible for him. Both of them possess some weaknesses but Gandhiji had much more on the hands to manage and be responsible to, which Ambedkar might not comprehend all the time.

    @AnuragSingh-sd3wt

    @@vichhu1985 I do not disagree, babasaheb was the chairman of the drafting committee and there were 7 people in the committee (including babasaheb) who were supposed to write the constitution, but the reason people say "Ambedkar wrote the constitution" is that, that the other people of the committee didn't used to show up for variety of reasons, like, some were out of town or country, some were in some external affairs, some were sick, one of them died (I am literally not making this up, this information is written in multiple books, including his autobiography, you can do the research for yourself). So he was the only person left with the responsibility of what to write, how to write in the constitution. Also, many say, that our country's constitution is copy pasted from other countries. Remember, there is no copyright for "laws and institutions", as the preamble of our constitution mentions "equality", "liberty" and "fraternity" (similar to the French constitution). constitution makers were certain from the starting that liberty cannot exist without equality and equality cannot exist without liberty and both cannot exist without fraternity.

He is open to the interviewe for questions, the questions are so clear and straight and the answers as well! However, BBC have not published the entire interview of Babasaheb here. Only the questions regarding Gandhiji are answered here. I'm pretty sure the interview must be more than this and the interviewe must have questions more than this. The entire archived interview should be published into the public domain without fear and favour so that the entire world must listen and relisten to Babasaheb. I am a huge fan of Baba Saheb. However, I am also a huge fan of Mr. Gandhi and such is his stature that people are still talking about his ideas & his principles. For me Baba Saheb is the greatest leader mother India has ever produced followed by Mr. Gandhi.

    Try to understand the point babasaheb is making.. He said people mostly used to go to meet gandhi as devotee's n he met gandhi as a opponent.. So as a opponent you can actually see true colours which those devotee's can't even think in their wildest dream.. bcz when you become devotee you stop yourself being critical, logical n Intellectual.. doesn't it make more sense?

    Both Gandhi and Ambedkar wanted to divide the indian public and listening here to Ambedkar it is clear that this man hated Hindus. Scheduled class/untouchables are just poor people. I would gladly sit and share a meal with them.

    The greatest tribute we could give Babasaheb is by adopting his principles in our lives. Get really well educated & after that do not forget to give back to your people/community. It may take years but work on it. It could be something you are good at. Adopt the philosophy from Gita, the idea of selfless service to reach the ultimate. Educate, Organize & Agitate - Jai Bheem!
