Sitaram Yechury on caste, China and ‘anti-Dalit’ communists | What’s Your Ism

#sitaramyechury #communism
Amid the ongoing election fever, the Left parties are looking to regain their lost ground. But what are the limitations facing the Red Flag? Why do Indian communists share a difficult relationship with the anti-caste movement? And what is happening in the international communist movement?
In this special two-part episode on What's Your Ism, Sudipto Mondal speaks to the two tallest leaders of the Indian communist movement - Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and D Raja, general secretary of the Communist Party of India.
In part one, Yechury talks about his anti-caste assertions, and confronting caste in his Brahmin household by cutting off his janeu or sacred thread. He also sheds light on the Indian communist’s relationship with the anti-caste movement, laal-neel alliance, and global affairs.
The Marxist politician also speaks about Ukraine war’s connection with India, the commonalities between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Russian counterpart Valdmir Putin, “akhand Russia”, the international communist movement, and his trip to China.

Caste is the skeleton and class has been the flesh sculpted over it in Indian context. Mr Yechury admits caste stratification pre dates that of class by centuries so his argument that you do away the ugliness by stitching the flesh whereas caste continues to provide the x-ray to see the bones behind the flesh to identify and hate the man despite the plastic surgery of economic emancipation.

The majority of whites gather around Mr Donald Trump to threaten the democratic values so carefully preserved and preached by them to the whole world. The right wing with the tacit support of liberal democrats cannot imagine being ruled by blacks because the legacy of slavery still remains in their mind as a hangover from the past. The Mandal movement was similar in the sense that right and left combined in the campuses and started stitching shoes symbolising that they hate sharing campuses dominated by the marginalised. Wealth education does not level the field between sawarnas and awarnas. Caste ghettos exist in modern cities where a dalit cannot buy an apartment despite his financial ability. @@anand4244 honestly you can suggest he was ignorant on this matter, but the bare fact is that in those times, politics was not determined by the social composition of ministries. It was not the dominant discourse of the time, and to the extent it did happen, it was a strand of conservative politics of the Congress (keeping different upper-caste and middle-caste groups happy by giving tickets to their leaders). Yes communist politics took pride in itself based on the negation of this logic of political convenience. Times have changed. Now BJP, Congress etc each party mentions how many OBCs and Dalits are in their ministries. As we just witnessed, Yechury was also sharp to reply that the Devasom ministry in Kerala is handled by a Dalit. It is a reflection of the importance given to this discourse now. Does it actually amount to a better politics though? I doubt. Successive governments have presided over waves of privatization and reduction in public investment to the point that nutritional poverty and unemployment has increased to the point of catastrophic heights in the same liberalization period in which this discourse has become important for parties. Even in terms of annihilation of caste, there was a time in the 90s when parties like BSP would seriously prosletyze against the ideologies embedded in Hindu social relations and gradually they surrendered to the mere logic of representation politics, even endorsing Hindutvadi politics at times. Perhaps it is better consciously distribute portfolio according to social composition, but when that becomes the central question around which politics revolves instead of actual policy and ideology, one is doomed to a nihilistic and despairing political environment.

Raja statement that one should not look at past documents of the party to understand the policies and framing question may not be correct. To understand one must look at the current position. Even Gandhi used to say that what is said in past cannot be guide to his ideas. He should be understood from his latest position. One theory I have just unproven. Sikhism is a result of 500 years of extraction of Indian philosophy from Bhagat Jaidev a Brahmin born in 1175 AD to Guru Teg Bahadur Ji who attained martyrdom in 1675 all the writings of all Bhagats from 1175 AD to 1675 AD are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It was especially revealed for the so called low castes today’s SC, ST, OBC, Tribals who constitute about 85% of the Indian Population as per 1931 caste census. To demonise Sikhism in the majority of Indian population especially in the eyes of so called low castes, this term *WARRIORS* has been stressed upon 95%, fact of the matter is Sikhism is 95% *SAINT* & 5% *SIPAHI*. Sikhism yearns for a casteless society where everyone is treated equally irrespective of caste, gender, Color or religion. This sends chills down the spines of those who place emphasis on categorisation based on the family of birth. So to stop spread of this message of Sikhi, this term has come in very handy in this time when Sikhism should have exploded in this age of globalisation. No doubt Sikhs are also at fault but these mechanisms also cannot be ruled out

@@ABBartan not all narratives are created equal, although I agree that you shouldn't make historical judgements based on thoughts of those living today, that doesn't invalidate them either. Nehruvian India was not a disaster but it wasn't a grand success either, it largely failed at the goals it set for itself as was apparent by Nehru's 3rd term or even his critics across the political spectrum at the time, though for a post-colonial state it did better than most. Soviet expansion into Latvia and Romania weren't peaceful democratic exercises and didn't install some free worker-peasant council republics, Soviet rule in Latvia came about through diplomatic pressure to acquire military bases in the country and then military occupation of the country following the secret sections of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, leading to the dismemberment of independent Latvia established during the Russian civil war, and then even when they retook it by the end of ww2, they still faced a decade long insurgency in the form of the forest brothers. Although Baltics were better off than many other republics in the USSR by the 80s they still faced many issues and were facing a similar kind of settler colonialism as during the days of the Russian Empire, and the baltics were the first countries to breakoff from the USSR in popular protests if I recall correctly. As for Romania that country faced a similar pattern of takeover as rest of the Eastern European countries liberated by USSR during ww2 just with it's king being an extra obstacle, the pattern being- soviet military occupation intimidates and destroys non-communist outfits on ground under the guise of ending fascism, a non-communist PM is initially installed but pressured into having communists in key positions like interior and defence ministries, eventually the local communists and soviets force the PM out of power and install a new communist PM who forms a supposedly multi-party coalition government, new rigged elections are held to maintain a facade of abiding by the promises made to the western allies, the communist-aligned coalition secures a massive majority, and in the case of Romania completely takes over the security apparatus and finally removes King Michael. In the case of Romania, their long time communist dictator starting from the 60s Nicolae Ceaucescu portrayed himself as a nationalist fiercely defending Romanian independence from Moscow, to that end he maintained good relations with the west and criticized soviet foreign policy, while initially appearing to relax authoritarianisn during his early rule, ended up establishing a NK style totalitarian regime and oversaw an economic decline, debt crisis, and a austerity programme which led to a big decline in the standard of living of average Romanian, all contributing to his kinda famous violent overthrow, no wonder they don't have good memories of that time.

In Kerala CPI(M) always had only one member from dalit community in their ministry and that too they were in charge of SC/ST welfare along with any insignificant departments. Even the present 20 member ministry in Kerala is having only one from dalit community and none from tribal. Even he is heading SC/ST welfare and Devaswom.

Since its birth in 1964, cpl(m) advocated people's democratic revolution. In 1967 the party suddenly changed its opinion and participated in elections. Since then cpi(m) has become a votebaj party. This party has completely bowed before indian bourgeoise parliamentary system and indian capilatist economic system. Was it deviation? No. Actually cpi(m) was never a communist party. Nor is it a communist party now. This party is a revisionist off-shoot of revisionist cpi which betrayed the epoch-making telengana farmers' movement to appease nehru and congress party.

This indicates the failure of communist movement in india and the bammanical leadership was responsible for its near demise…

25:49 just because both of you were getting Soviet support back in the day doesn't mean you have to still blindly follow whatever bs Moscow is saying today. CPI (ML) somehow has a more sane understanding of global affairs than both of the established communist parties in this instance. Russia was manipulating Ukrainian politics for decades, and when the Ukrainian people overthrew Yanukovych, a Russian backed corrupt oligarch during Euromaidan protests and started moving closer to EU and NATO, Russia panicked, used the presence of Russian language speakers in donbass to fuel a civil war in the country and illegally occupied Crimea with unmarked Russian soldiers. Ofc any Ukrainian government after this will try to ally with NATO when the alternative is either agreeing to Russian demands (weakening the central government, giving a portion of their country effective independence) which going by their historical experience and that of other Eastern European countries will only lead to an eventual loss of independence. If this were happening in Latin America (idk with Cuba) you people would be the first to support anti-imperialist struggle against American oppression or whatever but because its happening in Eastern Europe suddenly there's a Mearsheimer style realist geopolitics analysis of spheres of infleunce to justify aggression by a poor helpless Russia being cornered by evil global capitalist-imperialist NATO and USA into having no choice but to militarily invade Ukraine to pre-emptively protect itself from a joint NATO operation to capture Moscow. 29:27 conveniently leaving out the civil war that happened in between, where the bolsheviks millitarily put down independence movements in Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Mountain Republic, Basmarchi rebels in central, and probably many others, while Poland, Finland and the Baltic states managed to millitarily win against the bolsheviks and whites, thereby securing their independence during the interwar period. It's easy to have republics voluntarily acede to your union when those opposing it have been killed or exiled, and only those ideologically loyal to you are in charge of those republics. I think I'll lose my sanity trying to correct all the historical misinformation Yechury is spewing, but it's pretty standard for orthodox marxists worldwide to whitewash Soviet history.

India does the same to the Maoists, but why no one is calling what Modi, Manmohan Singh and Vajpayee did as atrocities? At least the Maoists are honest, that they openly declared they want to bring down the ruling class of India, but the Capitalist infiltrators in USSR were cowards and deceivers, that they had to wear a Communist mask to do fulfil their agenda.
