Sissel Kyrkjebø performing "Going Home" at Norwegian Television in 2007.
"Going Home" are based on the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's famous "Largo" theme from his Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), Op. 95. His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. The lyrics for "Going Home" was written by one of Dvorak's pupils, William Arms Fisher (1861-1948), who adapted and arranged the Largo theme and added his own words in "the form of a Negro spiritual." This song especially became known as a spiritual after the death of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940s.
This is part of what Fisher wrote in the published sheet music of his song, "Going Home" (Oliver Ditson Company):
"The Largo, with its haunting English horn solo, is the outpouring of Dvorak's own home-longing, with something of the loneliness of far-off prairie horizons, the faint memory of the red-man's bygone days, and a sense of the tragedy of the black-man as it sings in his "spirituals." Deeper still it is a moving expression of that nostalgia of the soul all human beings feel. That the lyric opening theme of the Largo should spontaneously suggest the words 'Goin' home, goin' home' is natural enough, and that the lines that follow the melody should take the form of a negro spiritual accords with the genesis of the symphony."

Sissel, the international singing sensation and national treasure of Norway, is established as one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos. Her angelic and powerful voice has made Sissel a national institution and she has sung all over the world, selling over ten million solo albums. She has contributed haunting vocal tracks for the soundtrack to Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, and has been performing duets with singers like Charles Aznavour, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, Brian May, Neil Sedaka, Bryn Terfel and Russell Watson. In 2005, she was knighted by the King of Norway, as the youngest ever to receive this honour. And in 2006, her album 'The Spirit of the Season' with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir went to number-one on the Billboard Classical Charts, and received a Grammy nomination. A very remarkable voice that only comes once in our lifetime.

Of all the sopranos on KZread I've listened to, Sissel sings with the smoothest voice of all. She shows no stress and hardly any effort- - - the words and sounds just smoothly leave her vocal chords.
Im with you on that. Never ever get tired of listening to this.
God has given us an Sissel, with a voice like an Angel and phenomenal talents....God bless Sissel.

My dearest love, it's been a year to the day and nearly to the hour since you went home. A few days from now it will have been one years that in a little Montana cemetery the casket with the most beautiful woman I ever knew was lowered into the earth. Many times I said that I didn't know about "Love at First Sight" but I do know about Love At First Kiss. Our first kiss was on our second date- July 12th, 1968. I miss you so.

Ivan Granger Our Lord is so good to us even those among us who sadly do not believe in Him. He gives us the beautiful voice of Sissel, the art of Leonardo da Vinci, the perfume of a rose, the Beauty of a sunrise and sunset, the joy of a new baby and His son that we may know Him the one true God.
This is the pinnacle of perfection.

She takes my breath every time I hear her sing.
I was looking for this song when I discovered Sissel and have tried to listen to everything she has ever performed since, but this remains one of my favorites. If I have music at a funeral, this would be it, but I listen to it as I think of my own death and it gives such comfort. Sissel's voice is that of an angel and I will carry it with me.

When I listen to this selection -- the haunting, ethereal quality of her voice and singing, and the almost other-worldly beauty and expression of her face -- something rises up within my heart and spirit. It is a combination of joy-longing-aching --- that brings both a joyfulness to my heart and tears to my eyes at the same time. Wow. I love Dvorak's Largo. It is unique in classical music in that it projects visuals. Fisher's lyrics just add so much more depth and emotion. Sissel's performance is incredible.

One of my all time favourite singers!!!! Sissel knows the deeper meaning to this song, ie; discovering your true self, and that is reflected in her performance. Pure joy, bliss, whatever that means to you. Thank you sisselfan.

I love playing this tune on my bagpipes...have for years. In all that time I've never taken a moment to dig into the words to the song!
So beautiful. Very relaxing to listen to. I enjoyed the Melody, the lyrics, and of course Sissel’s beautiful voice

She's not from the states, Norma. However if you listen to her in interviews you would most certainly think so as she speaks absolutely perfect English. Besides her beauty and her magnificent voice she has charisma & is the most expressive artist I've ever known.

Interesting - "Going Home" suggests that we had been there before - somewhere left, somewhere lost - returning BACK again !! Jesus Christ calls out to us, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened (and weighted down with the cares and burdens of this world), and I will give you rest.
