Shenandoah ~ Sissel

From Sissel in Concert ~ All Good Things
I especially appreciate the violin and the heavy "thumps" of the base drum at the back, and most of all the voice of Sissel, which make this my favourite rendition of Shenandoah

I can never get enough of Sissel and her beautiful and compassionate voice. I'd love to see one of her performances.
My enjoyment, is that her vocal clarity is unmatched, even in 2023.

I agree. Been listening to her for many years now and she is in a class all by herself. Not only does she have this clarity and tremendous range its her overall tone as well. She is also SO expressive in presentation. Just an incredibly beautiful voice AND if I may add I'm certain a beautiful person from within as well. The only other female singer on this rock that comes close to her was Judith Durham (that we sadly lost last year). However they are so devoted to their respective countries that I doubt that they ever met. It is truly sad that some of us cannot live forever but these are two of those souls.
Sissel is beyond compare. Norway was my son's favorite port, when he was in the navy. Said the people were very nice.
My ancestors settled in the Shenanndoah Valley, Va....those mountains are magnificent to me. Love your voice and song
This ought to be a teaching video for singers
Vithu Kichodhan: This song is among the very best ones of her singing. What more could one ask another than her beauty. A beautiful lady.
I find no doubt if her fantastic voice really can be compared with the color , clarity and the sparkle of a super diamond only found in the deepest part of the earth
Her singing melts the hardest Hearts. She is a blessing to mankind through her beautiful voice, kind and gorgeous face. God compacted many attributes into one beautiful soul.
I've never heard of this performer before now; found her while searching for this song. Her clear, pearly high notes are piercingly beautiful. I have seldom heard a modern, popular singer with more purity of tone, without the airiness of pop singer sloppiness. Bravo!

Found her for the same reason.
I agree that this is her best performance of this song. She just opens up her throat and belts out those "away"s and lets her voice have free rein. Glorious.
Fantastic version! Sung so well. The violin player is a great addition very well played!❤👍👏
Every time I hear her sing this, I get chills. It's been one of my favorite songs for years and she sings it beautifully.
Just wish Sissel would tour the UK..😘
This is a song I learned to sing in the 3rd grade attending public school in SE Los Angeles County. I remember how this song chilled me by it's beauty. I wanted to sing this, and indeed I did join the class, with the best of my ability.
I've been a fan of this Woman since before Titanic and I can honestly say she ranks amongst the very best in History. What a clean, silky beautiful delivery. My god what a voice. If Angels sing, I guess there is one on Earth called Sissel.
73 yr old music lover just found best female voice ever. ljh
Wow!!!! Human beings are capable of such amazing and beautiful things are we not?
A classic ballad exquisitely sung by one of the greatest singers of all time.
My Wifes Father Passed Away Early Yesterday Morning. And Then For Some Unknown Reason. i Found Myself Thinking of This Song This Morning. So I Had To Come and Find A Suitable Version of This Wonderful Song. i Believe I Just Did
That's very appropriate, Lover, as it may have originated as a rowing shanty of the French-Indian voyageurs, canoeing down the Missouri River early in the 19th century. Incidentally, John Jacob Astor, the American fur magnate, said that he would trade any three of his rowers for one voyageur. They were men of mythic proportion. God bless your heart for your song. It's my favourite. And Shenandoah was a magnificent man. His great grand daughter, Joanne Shenandoah, is a singer living in the Onondaga or Oneida nation of the Iroquois Confederacy, or Six Nations, as the British called them.
Just love listening to Sissel Krykjebo sings and sings and sings….. So ethereal and heavenly! Thanks for sharing…
I wish these songs went on all day. Thank you Sissel.

The river places you sing about are about the beauty of my American home..
Wow! I have always loved this song. I used to play the harmonica and would sometimes play this song. I have never heard this artist sing this song. It is very beautiful.
Lovely rendition of this song. Amazing voice.❤
Beautifully sung
Sissel is so beautiful but to see her and hear her sing one can't help but fall in love with her. Such a beauty and such a talent.
What a great voice. After seeing her on TV I just had to have one of her albums. It includes this great song.
The voice of an angel! 👍*shivers*
I have seen and heard a whole bunch of great performances but this song is beyond great. However I have heard a different story behind its meaning.. It's about a native American and his daughter who is named Shanadoah. Anyway, Sissel is beautiful with a really great voice. 👍
The voice is a dream, i could listen to her all day long.
When I first hear Sissel sings this song, I was stunned by both her angelic voice and her fantastic character. What a gorgeous woman!!!
Perhaps the best performance of "Shenandoah" I have ever heard.
This is one of the most beautiful songs of our country ever written and put to music. this is a song of our tribes our clans our roots. Heart felt, it fills the veins with pride and thankfulness.
Very beautiful voice and song. This song reminded me of the movie Shenandoah. Jimmy Stewart the main actor in a western movie and during American civil war. Jimmy and his family are looking for the younger son. And a tragedy happened to the family while on their way of looking and at the end of the movie. The younger son came home safe with the help of a black young friend. Very emotional movie and this Shenandoah song helped the movie more dramatic and more interesting...
It always cracks me up to see any negative comments in regard to performances such as this. I wonder what has that person done lately or ever that was worth a hill of beans. Some refuse to feel beauty even when it is laid bare before them. For that may think I show a lack of tolerance or do not appreciate our differneces; I do am glad for them.
Sissel has the purity and eternal beauty of a mountain lake in her voice, the clear fresh air and the peace you get in your heart watching the clouds floating to their unknown destination. Her voice and this incredible beautiful folk song widens my soul. This I feel this moment. Thank you so much for the video! Uli

Perhaps the most beautiful female voice I have heard ever!! She is so beautiful as well!
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Just discovered Sissel, she is AMAZING.
I must confess I've never even heard of Sissel before this morning, when I stumbled across this presentation by accident. What a beautiful young lady, and what a strikingly pleasant style and voice. I've already bookmarked this version of Shenandoah......possibly the best I've ever heard. Sissel has a new fan!
in my opinion, she has the prettiest voice i have ever heard. I mean the beauty of her face and voice is just mesmerizing. OUTSTANDING!

A most beautiful rendition of this stirring song. I love it 🥰
The most beautiful, angelic voice I've ever heard. The musicians are totally outstanding and complement her beautifully.
This song goes into my bones. Voice is already blessed!
When, in 1923, the United States built its first Airship, they named her Shenandoah because according to another legend it was word for "Daughter of the Stars." In 1925, while touring State Fairs in the US Midwest, she hit a squall line of thunderstorms. Unable to maneuver out of the way or climb over them, she was caught in severe turbulence and broke apart. Her captain and 7 other crewmen plunged to their deaths when the control car seperated from the Airship and plunged to earth. The remaining pieces, still having their helium gas in them, floated to earth. In all Fourteen of her crew died. The remaining 27 survived in the sections that came to earth. The Bow section floated several miles with 7 crew until it finally snagged a tree. The Leader who emerged from that crisis later became commander of the US Naval Airships, Commander, (later Admiral) Charles Rosendahl. As the ship lay in pieces on the hills of Ohio, the ship was beset upon by souvenir seeking looters trying to lay their hands on anything they could. Several items, including the ship's barometer and logbook, and Captain Lansdowne's hat were stolen. The fate of the daughter of the stars was sealed by the weather, but these pioneers taught us the lessons we needed in order to enjoy the safe air travel we know today. This happened on the 2rd of September of 1925. When I hear this song, I think of Shenandoah and all those sailors of the air. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pp57tsyNl8_Ij5M.html
If this isn't magic, then I've got no idea what magic really is. It touches your soul in so many subtle ways. I have never been so proud of being Norwegian before now. Never.
This has to be the epitome of excellence among singers..just a wonderful wonderful crystal clear and pitch perfect voice..thank you Sissel for performing this song.
Fantastic voice, great composition, excellent camera work, a romantic atmosphere, and a great video.❤🤝👍
A lovely Lady with a lovely voice ❤
i had to sing this song today at my schools concert. she is so much better than we were. haha.
It's cool that people even in Norway sing about a river the runs through my hometown, I guess it's just that good. **shiver**
Brings tears to my eyes. What a wonderful inspiration.

Agreed! Her voice gives me the chills. Thanks for sending this to me! What a beautiful way to start this day.
The song is an old American song, many stories behind it. It reminds me the most of a Confederate soldier longing to go home to his life and love in Virginia.
The most besautiful voice in the world, and I just found her this past summer.-- quite by accident, just cruising around on youtube. What an amazing gift and stunning presence!

She has an amazing voice, it's incredible. But I think my favourite version is Liam Clancy; he's an Irish folk singer and does and phenomenal version of this as well. Completely different voice range but his timbre adds so much to this song as well. Defineltely worth checking out.
I can not stop listening to her. One of the most beautiful singers, I want her to never stop
Sissel is awesome and wonderful. And, as if her stunnig voice and interpretations weren´t nothing she is still of the most beautiful women in this world. Norvegian beauty! THx for posting this!-KRegards
She is the best at singing this song!
So beautiful that the hair stands up on my back.
Oh, in any case her version is one of the finest I've ever heard! Fantastic!
You sang so beautifully. I brought back very happy memories of my Primary school days when my one and only precious teacher taught us the wonderful song. Very sad day for me as I still remember her as the best teacher in the world. Sadly, she has deceased.
I love your daughter? Great song! Pure tones and awesome control..a real singer!
When i was at my old school i had to sing this in Choir i loved it!!
Thanks so much for posting his video. My daughter won't fall asleep without listening to this song.
If you go to the WIKI page, you'll see "Oh Shenandoah" was technically a worldwide smash hit by 1850, author unknown, several versions, and passed on by sailors around the world, which just affirms Sissle's fisherman story!

+MrMansterdawg I grew up in a small village in northern Scotland, Durness. I was born in 1946. I remember hearing this song being sung all of the years Ispent in that village. So her story is most assuredly true. It's a song that's beenknown in Europe for many, many years.
I love that song with her thank you
i have to memorize this whole song n sing it in front of 500 kids!!! STAGE FRIGHT!!! :0
I live in sight of the Shenandoah River. Truly God's country!!!
As someone who lives in Virginia, I have visited the Shenandoah many times, I love Sissel!
now thats a singer BEAUTIFUL
last night was my first time hearing this awesome voice. Blew my heart and mind. I have passed it one to my friends. love it
pure magic the way Sissel sings this song
She is a marvelous talent, and is one of the greater prides of Norway. I've been to quite a few concerts, as she once belonged to a rather small ministry I work at, and every single time she blows me away! The power in her voice can not be found anywhere else! It's quite amazing! As said, the pride of norway ;) With best regards, Henning Christensen
Beautiful, I miss home.
I just.........I just.............was speechless, in lack of musical terms, I love the unconventional way she sings this, not like other opera singers, it has her own style that's calming and refreshing.(i'm young so I hadn't heard of her till today. where have I been!?)
