Hey everyone! Welcome to Part 1 of a two part mod series featuring our Sire D5! In this first installment, we'll be swapping out the bridge for a high mass quick release Albridge unit. To compliment the new bridge and the style of this bass, we're also installing a set of La Bella 760FS Deep Talkin' Flats! These are some of my favorite flatwound strings, and I'm excited to try them on the D5. Stay tuned until the end to see which pickup we will be using in Part 2! Let's get started!

    I'm a major fan of LaBella flatwounds, discovered them after not being happy with a set of considerably more expensive Pyramid Gold flats on my Ric 4001. You're turning that D5 into a decent axe. Thanks Lobster! 🦞

    To me, the stock bridge may look low tech but is perfectly functional and lighter in weight. I would not have changed it. It will be fun to see what changes the Dusty Hill pickup does. Another great video, Lobster!

    I love the sound of the flats. I don’t know how much difference the bridge makes, apart from ease of string changes. I’ve got some halfrounds that I’m going to put on my early style P Bass when I can justify changing them (probably in a decade!!). I’m looking forward to the pickup swap.

    Lobster. As a future mod video suggestion, could you fit a fender hole pattern bridge to a Sire where the 5 mounting holes need to be drilled. Locating the bridge properly so there is enough travel in the saddles to set the intonation is the part people need to see. Cheers!

  • @LowEndLobster

    @LowEndLobster

    Yes! I did this on my V5 fretless. It's easy I'd the new bridge is string thru body too. You can pop some fat allen wrenches in the ferrule holes to keep the bridge aligned then drill the mounting holes

    @@LowEndLobster That's going to be a piece of trivia that I'm eventually going to have to bottom out on. I kind of need to understand at some point why my visceral preference changed, and why that seems to be a VERY common experience. I mean, it's the OPPOSITE of putting on reading glasses, some would argue if it's an age thing that we would be BOOSTING the upper fundamentals and subharmonics rather than DAMPING them. But it occurs to me it's likely more complex than that. It seems the strings need to be quality flats first off or they'll just seem dead sounding from the start. maybe I didn't have the refinement of ear to notice the things yet, the perceptions and mental muscle memories of harshness and metallic scrapy sounds... it also occurs to me that the opposite of what's traditionally noted as "aging" could occur, just like it does with ultramarathon runners, who train for DECADES at their craft and the top performers are NOT kids, that there is a honing and a consciousness of subtleties that are crashed over the top of instead of being able to be coaxed out - I think the brightness we sought was in our own backyard the whole time. :-) Maybe I hadn't learned to enjoy just chilling with an instrument deeply enough to pull the tones up out that I wanted instead of expecting string type or gauge to just *give* it to me. The reason why I have so many instruments now is that when I get done refurbing them and setting them up, I'll have touched as wide a variety in as short of time as I could have - once you have one of each you can study the thing and when you Know it well enough then you'll know which instruments you need to keep. I am intrigued by this notion of audio processing maturity that doesn't just go "well you're getting old so your upper freqs sensitivity are gonna vanish" which seems to be a LIE at this point. My hearing range is still so much better than everyone elses around me that it's gotta be something more than just "good genes, he's got a gift, lucky guy" - I think all the muscles can be trained, even ear muscles and by this braindump here I seem to have actually landed a few facts by observation, so thanks for entertaining the punishment of my stream of typingness. Since I haven't been able to play it's been killing me that I know the music I want to play way better than I can perform it now because I've been listening to it for three years without getting to play hardly at all. I was listening for a year or so before then, but I hadn't realized that 99% of what comes out your speaker originates in your mind, so I tried to start visualizing songs I was hearing on the fingerboard, at least patterns. Before it was like okay I can definitely physically play that so I should be able to learn it easily ... ... ... LOL Yeah, so now I'm not as worried about my chops - the more I am able to physically practice without causing downtime, the improvements will be non-linear and quick, and I'll be progressing as fast as my body will let me instead of continually trying to push it and reharming stuff or breaking new things. It's just frustrating to finally hear into a song where I had much trouble before but now I lack the physicality to perform what I can now hear and process way more of than I used to be able to. Anyhow, some point I'll start taking more serious notes and researching other anecdotes to see if I can find a model or pattern in there somewhere, about the kid/rounds vs adult/flats preferences that seem to a common theme among enough bassists to give it a think. It's an interesting phenomena to me.

    I use to like those LaBella strings......that is until I tried the Rotosound's Jazz 77 Monel Flats. These strings just blew me away. They have just enough highs in them so every note is very clear and punchy, yet still retaining an old school thumpy tone. I have been using the SM77 which are 40-100. In any case, you can't go wrong with flats on a P-Bass!

    the color on this one is like pudding though, I love the deeper butterscotch tone...I just realized it's EXACTLY the color of butterscotch pudding lol like literally this second. :-) Totally. I would end up callin that one "Puddin'" now for sure, were that pony in my stable. I'm hit/miss naming my instruments. Some of the them get names, some don't, no reasons why, just is. But if I owned that bass and made that realization I would not be able to keep myself from callin it Puddin'. lol

    Dude, I was literally looking up affordable ‘51 style P-basses the other day, plus pickups I would use to upgrade one, and the Seymour Duncan ‘51 Stack was one of the pickups that caught my eye. Can’t wait to hear how this turns out. Side note- what’s the neck profile on this like? Is it comparable to a P-bass neck or is it more like a Jazz bass?

  • @LowEndLobster

    @LowEndLobster

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Rob! You will not be disappointed with the '51 Stack - it's fat and mean. That video drops Friday :)! Neck profile is a little thinner than a traditional P, but fatter than a J. Nut width is about 41.3mm, so similar to a Stingray almost.
