Just been listening to his radio broadcast in 1964 of Elgar’s 2nd symphony with the Boston S.O. in their legendary home Symphony Hall. An absolute revelation, possibly the finest performance ever recorded.

Name, if you will, another conductor of international stature, who would appear on a late night talk show (and I’m not excepting Leonard Bernstein). And the audience was with him all the way, see how he gets them to do a subito piano at 10:10.
