Sionyx Aurora Pro & Analog GEN 2+ 840-1050NM IR Experiments

In 2021 our airsoftclub did some experiments were we tested different nightvision technologies and their sensitivity to different wavelength of the IR spectrum. This is a summary of the test recorded from both the camera and the gen 2+ monocular. We didn´t want this work to be collecting dust on my hardrive when maybe someone could get use of it.
Timestamps for each test:
00:12 [840Nm test]
01:52 [940Nm 10w led no reflector]
02:40 [940Nm Ali Expresszoomable Flashlight]
03:47 [980Nm Led + reflectortest (NO IR-cancelling Filter)]
04:46 [980Nm Led + reflector + Filter]
08:15 [1050Nm Led 5w]
10:25 [1050Nm Led 20w]
12:41 [980Nm experimental Lightsource]
14:24 [Testing PNV 57A Tank IR Filters]
16:44 [Long range detectiontest 80m 980-1050]
19:58 [Footage from complete prototype ingame]
Equipment used in video:
Digital NV camera:
Sionyx Aurora PRO
Analog NVG:
Bering Optics GT-14 GEN2+
Phonecamera recording through analog:
Ulephone Armor 9
Filter 980NM:

LED is 970-980Nm and seems to be found on Ebay.

Did you use a flashlight for the 1050nm test?

Hello! In these tests i wasn't using a flashlight. However i did try to mount a reflector to it off-cam. The results were barely usable considering the led still isn't completely invisible to the analog device. I have also tried using a halogen bulb and a 1064Nm filter. Light however seem to loose its effectivenes pretty fast after 1000Nm.

Interesting. There was a guy who also used a 1050nm diode but he put it in a T20 flashlight. Said he could get 100yds out of it.

@@freedomfalcon yeah, well i bought 1050Nm leds from 2 different manufacturers. I got the same results. The first 2 initial tests we made was with 3w & 5w leds. Thats the reason i tried the extremely expensive 20w version. Then i bought another 5w led from a different manufacturer. No leds were performing that good. 100 yards is a really long distance. I really don't believe that its possible to the get those results to be honest. But if he can record it and compare to the Aurora by filming through a analog system, then i would believe it. If he really made a light that performs on that level it would be a gamechanger. Anyway i Love that more people är interested by this stuff, thanks for commenting 🙂

@@Irregular503 when i have time i can. But if you check my first Opsin video you will see that i actually do a quick comparison between the Opsin and the Pro using 1050nm leds in a room. It isn't a big difference between them.

Excellent tests!!! Have you thought about experimenting with different UV lights and how they perform with the Sionyx vs analog?

Yes we have talked about it in our discord group. I actually have some UV lights avaliable for this. However we have some other projects that we are going to do first. Thanks for the input 😀

So what would be your recommendation to anyone who has either an Aurora or a Photonis tube? I thought about buying a 940nm flashlight and putting a filter on the lens, I want something that could be mounted to a helmet to provide IR light in very low-light environments.

Check my other video were i make my own 980Nm ir light. That works good for navigation and also produces alot less visible ir for most analog. The photonis see this light also but not as good as the sionyx. Then again all analog are different to some extent, the ones i tried could be more abused.

More than likely what was actually happening is the more expensive 1050nm led had better filtered spectral output than the cheaper 5 watt LED which had some light leaking out on the shorter wavelengths as well which made it more visible. The way you test these is really weird though and you don’t seem very smart.

@@kishascape to be honest i was pretty new to IR and nightvision when this was made. These tests was also rushed since i run an airsoft field, club and alot more. This was just something to give people a hint of how "effective" the sensors were. I was basically playing around with them. I could have used reflectors and have also done that afterwards with results that wasnt much better. Saying im not smart because of one video is a strange remark in it self though. The LEDs is however of the same brand so that sound strange. The LED that Sionyx them selves have put in their own 1050nm helmet flashlight is ALOT better. i have planned to show a comparison between that and the 980nm light i made. If they arent lying about what type of wavelength that LED uses it means the Chinese version is worse.
