Sintel - Open Movie by Blender Foundation

Фильм және анимация

Help us making Free/Open Movies: cloud.blender.org/join
"Sintel" is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film.
This 15 minute film has been realized in the studio of the Amsterdam Blender Institute, by an international team of artists and developers. In addition to that, several crucial technical and creative targets have been realized online, by developers and artists and teams all over the world.

    Yes, many writers now prefer to writes short films such as this and not the two hour long movies you used to see so often. This is the reason why many film companies are making (sometimes worse) remakes of old movies, and that short films are so much better than the movies a lot of the times.

    Come on! Its a story as old as time! Its a frikkin stereotype! It kinda ruined what could have been a cool story. Nifty animations though, they will go far. Need better writers though, rather than just regurgitating the oldest cliche in the book. "Oh no, because of a lack of information, i wound up doing the opposite of what i intended! Curses!". Its THE tragedy plot and it was the entire plot in this. Lets not get carried away. Im sure a feature length movie based on this would have a lot more to it than just the classic go-to for tragedy. Its like this entire comment section never seen/read a tragedy before.

    @@narfle Yeah it's a trope, but it really isn't as common nowadays. And also, there was more to it than just a lack of info and killing the thing she loved, it was also that she was so focused on the fact that he was taken from her and so single-minded in her mission that she didn't realize all the years that passed her by, how much time she spent and wasted, which is why she thought he was still a baby and couldn't comprehend that it was Scales, not to mention how old she actually looked now. The general idea of this could also be said to be a common trope, but it's still true, and really is the main focus of this animation, not the killing/destruction (which is still important, but more of a secondary subject). Your comment seems way more pathetic than theirs. There's no need to be a snob. The nuances of how something is done is just as important as the end result. Not to mention that they are cliches for a reason. Its been done again and again by everyone, just cause someone to use a cliche doesn't make it automatically less valuable.

    *3* *Things:* First, I realized "Sintel" is an anagram for "Silent" (and also "Listen"). Maybe it's obvious to some people, but I had to watch it 4 times before I noticed. And both Silent and Listen perfectly fit, since most of the storytelling here is not through dialogue, it's through expression of character and excellent cinematography, which you must listen to / observe in order to understand. Second, there's a sound of a baby creature crying out at 1:05 when Sintel stabs the man; the man's groan happens afterwards separately. Maybe this is supposed to be Sintel herself crying out, but I take it as direct foreshadowing of when she stabs the dragon at the end of the film (the baby dragon she knew that's now grown up, hence the baby cry). And third, the scar/vein thing on Scales's wing is actually there the whole time on the big dragon model. I went back through expecting that they had removed it for the shots before the one where Sintel sees the scar, but no, it's there. (You can see it pretty clearly at 9:14 for example.) Anyway, this is probably the best short film I've ever seen: the animation is stunningly detailed, the musical score is eerily beautiful and heart-rending at the same time, the sound design is so atmospheric and wonderful, and of course, the story . . . the story is one that is simple yet immensely powerful. Somehow I've experienced more emotional response and character connection (and absolute surprise) in a 15-minute short film than I do in most modern 2-hour movies. Wow. This is truly a masterpiece.

    that's some attention to detail im really impressed and jealous of. hats off to you i know this short movie seems really sad and depressing but this movie still has a positive end, mainly the end after the flowers bloom again and the baby dragon running after Sintel. let's say i have issues with seeing things in an optimistic way and the only reason i really even know about this good end meaning is because i read a comment about it but i also am very deeply connected to dragons (lol not as if i actually sensed or was one but because there is somehting about them that just makes me... happy) so seeing the death of Scales (especially an accidental one but usually regardless of the situation) just broke me immediately. right now as im typing this, this is the 4th time i came to watch this because i came to get the link to this animation to share, and yep, i break down just as easily as the first time seeing this there could be so much more i could do in life if i jsut learned how to see positive and more details of why how and what something is and happening. as an end statement: i fully 200% agree that this is a masterpiece of an animation.

    If I was Sintel, I would've stayed in the cave, waiting to die. As i do not know how to live life anymore. To think of it, you found something so precious to you, you cherished it, and took tender care of it. For everyone watching this and feeling awful, it might help to know that the ending is pretty clearly supposed to be optimistic. Yes, Sintel killed Scales and is left to stagger in shock from the cave-in, but the same flowers that moments ago seemed to be mirroring her grief state start to bloom as the baby dragon is revealed to not only be alive, but scampering after her. Even if she never forgives herself for what she did to Scales, the same determination that blinded her even to the passage of time isn't going to let her abandon her responsibility to the baby dragon. So cheer up, mates. This story didn't end as a tragedy. It's just become a quest for redemption.

  • @JBinero

    @JBinero

    The only thing which would've made this story even better in my opinion is if she rescued the baby dragon from the collapsing cave, but it fought off because it was angry she killed its mother, and she had to kill the baby dragon as well in the end. Then it would have been a true tragedy.

  • @electricbayonet2

    @electricbayonet2

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@JBinero I don't think that would fit either thematically or logically. If everything up until the cave-in was left the same, I can't imagine any way that Sintel would believably kill the baby dragon, and _especially_ not in self-defense. By the end of the video's story, Sintel is broken. I can't imagine a reason why she'd '[have] to kill the baby dragon' because even if she knew it was going to kill her, she'd probably let it. Or, more likely, she'd just kill herself to speed up the process. If anything, _that_ would be tragedy taken to the fullest degree, because then the cycle of pain would keep going. Scales is still dead, Sintel would die without any sense of closure or redemption, and the baby dragon would be thrust into a cruel and violent world after the death of its mother. It would probably just grow up to be the kind of monster that is eventually slain by a valiant knight/hero/whoever after years of terrorizing the populace for seemingly no reason except that it could.

    I know I'm like 5 years late, but if you still think like this... Boy, is anime the solution for you! Have depression? Anime will fix it, however it will tear it down in the last 2-3 episodes and make you cry for the next couple days and you'll think to yourself, "Never again". But you'll always have that empty void because you enjoyed one anime, so you'll try to fill it with watching another, hoping it has a good ending, but it won't and the void gets bigger and repeat.

    I've just watched this again, after many years, and it is incredible to see how it has held up! It was so ahead of its time! The character development and animation, the cinematography, the sets, the shots, everything is A++++. However, I'm still on the fence with the storyline. Scales steals the show. In my opinion, when Sintel kills Scales, she also kills the connection that the audience had with her. It doesn't matter that Scales was killed in self defence. Sintel is a "tragic hero" who killed the heart of the movie. My heart stayed in the cave with Scales. When the cave was collapsing, if Sintel would have stayed with Scales, to die with her, I might have felt differently. I could have cared less if Sintel fell off of the cliff that she was moping on afterwards, and I could have cared less that the little dragon was scampering after her. I didn't give a damn about her after she killed Scales and saved herself. That's a tragic hero that just became a coward. Regardless of my opinion on story, this is still an incredible showcase for an amazing Open Source project. Kudos to everyone on this. It still blows my mind.

    A beautifully made short film with a simple storyline, which proves that the fantasy genre can work just as well on a small scale as on a blockbuster. It’s impossible not to feel absorbed by the near-perfect art direction. The filmmakers have designed a world pretty ambitious to execute in 14 minutes, and the result is mind blowing. Its atmosphere and detail reminded me of the Shane Acker film 9

    amir dagan it's not that short films are or not legal. It's that this film BELONGS to the Blender Foundation and is released under Creative Commons 3.0, a free licence. Sony has not only no right to take it down, it has not even the right to claim it belongs to them, they have BROKEN THE LAW, TWICE. They have stolen the work from others, not by making a small copy and watching it with their friends but by claiming attribution on something they don't own and that's a crime of slanter, And to add insult to injury they have forbidden to the own creators of the movie to use their own Intellectual Property in the way they see fit. I read that some people where thinking on crowdfunding legal actions against such abuses, I would very gladly participate if somebody sets up such a project!

    Don’t tell me this is not an abstract of a fabulous film. The adventure of Sintel must last more than 15 minutes. And the theme song is wonderfully touching.
