Single Plane Wrist Action

Спорт

The mind can not think faster than the body moves. That is the problem with "thinking" about motion. Proper movement is about the natural movement of the body if you place the body in the correct positions.
In this video, I discuss Moe's wrists and what he felt during his simple Single Plane Golf swing.
About the Single Plane Swing
The Single Plane golf swing is not a quick fix golf technique. It is a system, beginning at address, that simplifies the most important moment of the golf swing - impact.
Starting at address on two planes where the arms hang straight down at address, the Conventional golf swing is complicated. Because the arms are hanging straight down, a conventional golfer must lift the body into impact creating stress on the back.
This upward movement to accommodate the two planes is unnecessary.
The Single Plane Golf swing simplifies the golf swing by eliminating the need for the upward movement by starting and impacting on the same plane.

Walked nine holes this morning and shot a -3 under par using the single plane swing. Started this almost two years ago. Before discovering your videos I would have never dreamed of hitting so accurately. Thank you Todd.

Thanks Todd. I met you years ago in Florida when Moe was put on Golf Digest’s cover. Glad to be a new subscriber. I’ve been practicing De La Torre’s and Jones’ teaching on swinging the club head. I guess now it’s more of swinging the head and shaft. Looking forward to seeing and learning from your teaching.

This also reminds me of Manuel De La Torre and Moe referenced him as a major influence, using the arms and letting the rest, including the wrists, follow.

Are there any videos of moe talking in depth about how he developed his straight line through the club? I remember him talking about a coin behind him and two tees infront of him, keeping it square the whole journey. This is self explanitory, but i wonder if there is more like this to help build the muscle memory before even attempting the ball. Im fascinated by moe norman. Only played golf for 6 months now, im obsessed. Never played in my life before now. Which means i can build my swing straight from here. So thanks alot!!

I like most of your instruction and I m a believer int the KISS principle. I watched on of your vids where u discussed various and degrees of body, shoulder , torso movement. To me that s irrelevant and does nothing to improve my swing or addressing the ball. The basics you instruct are excellent, but once u start talking about degrees of this and that U lose me. I m sure a lot of golfers feel the same way. A persons bodily ability to swing the golf club varies from person to person. I ve played this game for 55 years. My ability to play well varied. Sometimes the swings worked sometimes they didn t. I agree with your intro to your vids (nothing better when you get up in the morning no better feeling when u hit the ball well I agree< but i ve woken up feeling great and ready to play golf. Guess what.?

Jimmy Demaret once quipped. “The golf swing is easy to master once the golfer learns to keep the club head outside the hands and stay in balance.” The wisdom in that statement is that using a “one piece” hips/shoulders/hands wide sweeping takeaway keeping club head outside of hands, without any manipulation with the wrists, results in the momentum acting on the mass in the club head pulling the lead arm straight and horizontal with the ground with so much force it becomes physically impossible to bend the lead arm at the elbow. So what happens when the club can’t swing backwards any more? The force acts on the weakest point on the lever arm, the wrists, automatically cocking them without any conscious effort. That action is seen in the swings of Hogan, Snead and most other golfers before the conventional wisdom for the takeaway changed to the Nicklaus method of taking back the club with hands, then shoulders then hips which resulted in a steeper backswing plane and separation of right arm from body (flying elbow) which characterized Nicklaus’ swing. Moe intuitively understood how to use mass and momentum to do the work in the swing efficiently. The more forcefully the club is swung back with hip action (lateral and circular) as he, Hogan, Snead and many others who learned with hickory clubs did so as not to snap the shafts, the faster it will automatically whip up around the hands. Acceleration has an exponential effect on force so that automatic whipping action creates enough force to effortlessly pull the club up and the shoulders around past the hips to top of the back swing EFFORTLESSLY. I studied and emulated Moe’s swing, along with Hogan’s and Frankenberg (aka Count Yogi). Something all three had in common where being known for their accurate ball striking and how they allowed the club force to pull the ‘thumb up’ radial deviation cocking of the wrist created in the backswing out of the wrist to ‘thumb down’ unlar deviation through impact with the ball using grip techniques which brought the face square to the target as the wrists maxed out instead or trying to “sustain the lag” (i.e. radial deviation) in the right hand as taught in the conventional swing. The result is the same biomechanical action seen when chopping down at 45° with an axe, toe-nailing with a hammer at 45° which the same force multiplication resulting from the grip allowing the club head to FREELY rotate and accelerate around the hands - the same action which occurred in their backswings but in reverse.

  • @TeddyCavachon

@@rossgerry8231 Its similar in mechanics and feel to swinging a axe or sledge hammer overhead using momentum and acceleration of head around hands. The swinging mass pulls the arms and steers it on whatever path it is started on. Because a golf club head doesn’t have much mass the tendency is to try to steer it with the hands, usually on a less than ideal path.

I understand the skipping a rock/stone being a right handed player, Yet when viewing Mo's video's, he always mentioned that his right hand was only there for the ride, he pulled through with his left arm/side. His right hand/arm was dormant!

What Moe is describing was the arm action from the top of the Backswing into the downswing but that about position three the arm straightens and extends as the lead arm folds. There is a clear extending of the right arm from a bent position to a straight position. So the lead arm can only pull for a period of time before the trail arm takes over and extends. There is no possible way the lead arm can pull the entire time. And that is not what’s happening from a biomechanical perspective. Most describing his feelings. He wasn’t wrong. But it wasn’t the whole story.

E3 swingweight would make a difference as well. It would take a decent amount of effort to try and fire or flip the wrists if you're swinging a telephone pole. Lead and lag is set up by the equipment.

Moe gave no verbal swing secrets. In most of his verbalization he gave plenty of clues and is wanting the student to figure out what he was trying to say. Where Moe does his actual teaching is by example of his swing over and over and over of pounding balls. Repeating his swing for us to learn it by observation. He has himself on numerous occasions, I’m not going to tell you I am going to show you. I don’t think he has ever said to keep your right heel planted through impact and somewhat beyond into the follow through though. Thank you for helping to make sense of all the clues that Moe has provided.

And after seven years, I am starting to really understand a few things!!

Hi Todd. Are your feet at address just a little wider than l would normally see? Also, on the backswing, does the clubhead come inside a little, as opposed to like a pendulum?

  • @ToddGravesGolf

    @ToddGravesGolf

stance width depends on the club you are hitting. Short irons are more narrow than the driver. The club moves naturally in the backswing in relation to the body. You turn and the club moves with the turn.

Tested the swing on 80 golf balls a few days ago. I've never hit the ball so straight and so consistently. My main thing is to just make sure I drop the club from the top and tug it through to the target. When I do that, it's perfect.
