Singapore: The Financial Center that wants to become an Agricultural Powerhouse? - VisualPolitik EN

Check out our brand new channel, Visual Academy: / @visualacademy1661
Singapore is most likely associated with the financial industry, trade, tourism or its huge port. Maybe even with high-tech companies or vaults where precious metals are kept. But we would certainly never associate the city-state of Singapore with agriculture. In fact less than 1% of its entire territory is occupied by farms.
Now that may be about to change. The Singaporen government has launched an ambitious program to turn this financial center into an agricultural hub.
So, why does the government of one of the most prosperous places in the world want to revive agricultural activity? Does it make sense to do so?
Is it really possible in a city dominated by skyscrapers, international financial headquarters, endless shopping malls and buildings everywhere? Well, in this video we answer all these questions.

I hope we'll implement such a thing here in the Quebec area of Canada, we have hydro-electricity for most of our power and snow half the year forcing us to import most fruits and vegetables. Plus like everywhere else our city centers are badly hit by covid making most towers empty for now. Add to that a growing trend for working online, you have a great opportunity to develop that field here. I'm not too optimistic about the local government foresight though.

The usual staples, like grains, we are not producing enough to be able to export (except for potatoes and many disease resistant and high - producing potato races are from Dutch cross - breeding), but we make up value - wise with flowers, greenhouse grown vegetables, high quality diary products (cheese!) etc.

This type of agriculture is called Precision Agriculture (PA or Precision Ag). The point is low input, high tech. So hydroponics, aquaponics, using computers, infrared, led lights, etc. are all utilized. There are a lot of companies and countries using and researching this field. Japan has a great new ISP or indoor shrimp production technology, Wageningen University in the Netherlands, University of Hohenheim in Germany, University of Reading in the UK, ISARA in France, and many other universities are all working towards this goal. In the EU, the EIT Foods program is focused on PA and even game companies like GIANTS have started to add in PA to their FarmingSim games.

As a Singaporean, I am pretty confident that food quality and carbon footprint play no part in this, but it is possible that the government sees an economic opportunity in becoming a tech leader in the field and then exporting the tech - we have done this with port management services, for example. But I think you missed the most important reasons, which are political. Externally, much of our food imports comes from Malaysia, and when relations sour, as it does pretty often, the government seems to pinpoint reliance on Malaysia as a vulnerability - this has already happened in the past with water. Also, domestic politics play their part because we're used to having an uninterrupted food supply so when they are interrupted, such as during covid or previously during SARS, it can be pretty visible and a source of discontent. But overall I'm pretty sceptical that we will commit to agriculture as a significant part of the economy in the long term. We have too much of a competitive advantage in other fields.

It occurs to me that if you're doing vertical farming and you're not dependent on natural light, you could just as easily build upward or downward, doing things either well above ground or pretty well below. Maybe both. It also occurs to me that when you're an island city state with limited space (and a ton of money) you could build something offshore that has a foundation underwater and is built up from there. Perhaps that would present an opportunity to make use of the water that's right there? Of course it's salt water, but it is right there and there's got to be some way of leveraging that. A floating farm of some sort is another thing that comes to mind. This whole thing is quite interesting, and I do wonder what Singapore is going to come up with. There's probably something that will emerge out of all this that will blow our minds.

I think SG, as a very forward looking and efficient country, is considering the changes that the world is facing now and acts accordingly. I see two major challenges to the country: climate change and deglobalization. These high tech solutions to both challenges could be the next sector the country draws its income from. SG is a product of globalization, its income today hugely depends on peace and trade among nations. They need to diversify. You recently made a very good video on its politics regarding water supply. The one issue I think they have more problems with is energy security. There are projects to address that too, but I think in that case SG is a bit late and its efforts might not be enough. We'll see. Anyways, I love SG and I wish all the best to the country and its people. 🇸🇬 Btw, the Netherlands is another country that is in danger if we don't stop climate change. SG is in a very similar boat. It is not a coincidence that they are leading other countries in presenting solutions.

Great effort, while you can certainly produce a lot of food in a small area with intensive intelligent cropping, where is Singapore getting the water? Ag takes quite a bit of water, even intelligent ag. While a country like Singapore or Israel can afford to desalinate for drinking water, this will usually make ag unaffordable. In addition, it's a bit hard to believe Singapore will export a lot of food to its neighbors given their larger amounts of land and lower labor costs.

Part of high tech agriculture is the much reduced need for water compared to traditional agriculture, granted that it still consumes much water. Anyway like he said, prices of vegetables produced in high tech farms are only 5% higher than imported vegetables, and it's just getting started. I doubt they are meant to export to neighbouring countries too. The first objective is still to be self-sufficient. The technology can be exported though.

To answer your question, we use water reclamation technologies like reverse osmosis to get clean water from treated sewage; much of the river tributaries in SG has also been converted to be linked with our reservoirs; and for the remaining amount, desalination and buying water from Malaysia makes up the rest of our water mix. Also with high-tech farming methods like drip watering and hydroponics, less water is used than traditional methods, as less water is lost via surface runoff and evaporation. Being smart on the choice of plants to grow in our hot tropical climate helps too. Overall, the strategy is to reduce our reliance on our neighbours rather than going for exports, as let's just say that even friends quarrel sometimes and Murphy's Law - though being able to export one's produce economically with little to no government assistance is definitely a marker for success and helps one scale up production to reap economies of scale as our local market is tiny.

Singapore is a prime example of land scarcity which forces it to go high tech in food growing, high cost setup, capital and tech intensive, well other countries should learn from them in their mistake on the aspect of not reserving land areas for intensive and integrated farming and they unsatiable need for expansion . Their need to develop costly R&D facilities and farming setups, yes agree they are a rich nation, but think about it, how sustainable can they get, and the millions of dollars required. In pockets of areas in places like North America, Central America, Australia and Japan and even Vietnam and Thailand, there is a resurgence of basic integrated farming by groups of people concerned with food security and food safety. They don't utilise high tech farming equipment or heavy machinery, they need not spend long hours working on the farm, yet are able to produce quality vegetables organically or chemical free. They work with the land, cultivate (caring for) the soil to get quality produce. Many industrialised farming practices "kills'' the land with excessive use of chemicals which poisons the soil and eventually the waterways leading out to the oceans. It is a vicious cycle. When mankind are now so eager to leapfrog into the future of technology, many are forgetting one basic necessity of man is food and how they are produced. The consequences are catastrophic and it is already happening. The question about high tech farming, or infrastructure and chemical intensive farming poses another risk, processing of their waste i.e. chemicals. Singapore is already way beyond recovery and need to artificially produce their food, something which land abundant countries must rethink and relook their agriculture industry for the benefit of mankind and the environment.

Some more discerning people might be able to tell the difference but I'm not really a veggie lover, so a vegetable is a vegetable, and they taste about the same to me 😂 I don't even bother to "choose" the vegetables on sale in supermarket. • @chlanchalashas

    @chlanchalashas

    3 жыл бұрын

taste has to do, not only how the produce is grown, but also what kind of produce is grown. Fx. many tomatoes in the super markets are already tasteless, cause strain of tomatoes selectively bred to be more plum and red, have lost the taste bit somewhere a long the genetic selection. If this new farming model focuses not only on the efficiency, but also on quality in a matter of taste - we could as actually see the taste come back to many of the vegetables which have lost it. As the farm-lab environment gives much better control of the inputs in the vegetables (water, fertilizers, less herbicide and pesticide) I would bet that we will actually get the taste back to our food rather than loose it even.

Globally the food security of many countries are affected by increasingly extreme weather which causes crop failure, the burgeoning of the middle class has pushed many former farmers to cities and food security can be an issue when more people are getting affluent where food demand increases and production is reduced due to lesser workers and prices will surely increase. Singapore has to plan ahead of time to ensure that our food security is ensured!
