Digging Into Singapore's Underground Masterplan | Why It Matters 5 | Full Episode

In Singapore, sewage lines, water pipes, electrical cables and transportation tunnels already crisscross the depths of the earth, yet the city has grand plans in store for this increasingly crowded subterranean space.
Joshua Lim digs deep to see how researchers are looking into the latest technologies to help the city’s builders maximise the underground space even more, without running into serious trouble.

This really brought the Battle for Singapore to life for me as it made it so easy to understand what took place thanks to the timeline and photographs of the area as it was in 1942. My father was in the Royal Artillery and was fighting on the 316 Battery and this has given me a real taste for what our troops were experiencing. I would have liked to know more about Gordon Bennett - did he really go against orders to save his own life? Excellent film, hope to see more like this.

As a tiny developed modern city state, the way you approach issues like HV Cable and all sorts of other will be different from developing country, you just can't do as them since existing circumstances are different in many ways. 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓

9:25 The study ranking of cities based on the density of their mass transit only includes the few cities that were selected in the underground utilization benchmark. It lacks many, including the densest of all, Paris, which has more than 150km of its network inside the 105km² constraints of Paris proper city limits. That puts the length of underground mass transit per square kilometer well in the thousands of meters or more than a kilometer per square kilometer. The video was extremely interesting and informative.

Am fairly sure it will have been addressed but am concerned about the added risk from global warming. Press reports of the impact of the Thwaites glacier melting (and more critically the glacier behind it) estimate a sea rise of 10 feet resulting. Thwaites is projected to melt over next 5 years, have not seen estimate for 10 foot rise after that. Am sure measures have been taken to prevent water ingress but it only takes one unforeseen incident to compromise entire infrastructure.

Just a thought, why isn't there a way to have easy access to the cables under the road? Instead of digging up the roads every time they need to do maintenance?

    1) Not enough space, still need to reserve space for future development. 2) Even if the space is there, building a accessible cable chamber mean need to have proper security measure or electronic surveillance to prevent tampering. 3) Cost of direct buried/ haunched pipe under the road is much cheaper than building an accessible cable chamber. The maintenance is usually once every 10 years, unless it is diversion for new services.

Main reason is digging is cheap because 1. Cost of inconveniences, pollution, jam, danger, loss of productivity, loss of quality of life to the neighbourhood are not priced in. 2. Foreign labor is cheap.

Telecom fibres optics cables are so much tiny in diameter even when bunched together which use pipes and manholes for easy access for maintenance and repair. Electricity cables are much more bigger in diameter and creating joints and repair are much more complexes which need bigger space to carry out joints and repairs. It is undesirable to put all the joints in one single holes as any explosion may burn the surrounding cables and causes bigger area of outages. Therefore manholes are impractical for laying electricity cable.

The land is their. The road is my grandfather road. The bank is their ahgong,. What's they cannot do.. Utimately if flood happen, they blame to weather landscape change.. Left Right they always right.. And the money they spent on infrastructure, from issues financial services like notes like bond so utimately no need invest a cent, still got capital and utimately still generate recursive income.. A very good deal 🤝..
