Actually, the crusaders, at last during the Baltic crusades in the 13th century, had no wives, because these knights were the members of the military order, i.e. the soldier monks. But the song is beautiful and Gesche sings like an angel. I hope, she is also as beautiful as an angel :)

Das ist mehr nur als ein launiger Enfall, harte raue Landsknechtsmusik durch eine zarte Stimme ruhig und nachdenklich zu singen. Man kann mit dem Inhalt nicht nur mitgehen, sondern ihm auch nachsinnen. Der Gesang macht garantiert eine friedliche Stimmung. Man hat den Eindruck, dass nur so eine sanfte Stimme ins Totenreich vorzudringen vermag. Sehr fein!

Just fails to move me the same way as the masculine version. This just needs to be sung by a male choir. Sorry, that is just what I get out of it. Your mileage may vary.
