As a high school student, I never understood Thoreau. Who wouldn't want more, more, more? But now I understand the responsibility that comes with everything we own: caring for it, insuring it, protecting it. The more you have, the more the stuff owns YOU!!

I work, because I am also blessed with a job helping people and that makes my heart sing. I save a few bucks each month, so I may build the little cabin,( like this guy did.) I will need a little porch facing West, to set my little rocking chair on. I will watch the river flow, the flowers bloom and reflect on all the beauty this life has shown me. I have reliazed that i have been so much happier when i was in the Philippines even though we don't have much money and no fancy things, we were more happier because we spent more time with family. We talked and laughed more. Here in Canada, we have to work and work and we don't see our family till late at night. Most of time, i am confused how to live in more sensible way. Many advertisers that we should have a big house, nice cars, fancy dresses so you will look "SUCCESSFUL" . I have been chasing this dream but my life became so complicated and no peace of mind. Late last year, I started to live simple, even eating food, i started just eating veggies because I have compassion with animals. Good Bless to your channel. Wishing you more subscribers. Thanks!

@@adrianoss.bougas3720 With pleasure. You can regard me as if I do not know what I am talking about if you want to, but this is what I have realised for now. Mathematically we have proven that there are way more dimensioms than just ours. String theoey says that they are at least 10. That means that there is a posibility that there is a realm within ours. I would like to propose that in those realms intelligent beings do exist, Alex Jones was right, inter-dimensions aliens are real. It is just that they cannot communicate with us at all when we are in our sober state. Lucid dreams, meditations and the use of psychedelic substences all seem to increase this signal. When I first tried weed strange synchronicies started ocuring way more frequently than ever before in my life. A lot of people expirience this phenomenon. The same happend when I got into the habit of meditation. A lot of people that do use psychedelics will tell you that even after you sober up, expect weird and bizzare things to occur. You can say as if I am crazy and that I do not know what I am talking about. But this hypothesis solves the fermi paradox. It is not like there is no one out there. We just do not pay enough attention, all those strange feelings we get, deja vùs and all are in fact just the only communication tool that they have with us in this reality. I have not yet actually talked to them but I heard voices while on weed. And no, no voices while sober ever yet. At least I know now what it is like for schizophrenics in a sober state. Quite scary. And the voices while on weed helped me get my shit together in my life.

"Friends that only accept you because of your status and material success aren't really friends." Once I had a group of friends like that. During school and also at the university they were like family to me. At least as long as they still studied too... But than I failed at my first attempt to get a university degree for reasons, that had nothing to do with the subject of my study (but with financial problems) and they changed their attitude. At one point it was so severe, that I felt the need to change the city for a second attempt at the university. I than had 2 to 4 jobs simultaniously besides all the studies and still they laught at me, calling me lazy, for still not having a university degree. Looking back it was such a waste of time and energy to even consider their "well ment advises" and critism. All I got from it was just hundreds and hundreds of sleepless nights, anxiety and needless shame over things, that were out of my control or because I couldn't adept quickly enough to changed conditions. I don't want to see them ever again! Even though I'm already in my midthirties - and still trying at the university... - I still want to cry sometimes when I think about the way they looked down on me.

"Being content is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of what you already have."-Unknown "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." - Leonardo De Vinci These two quotes are some of my favorites ever to refer to when I try to explain to others that materialism is distracting and ultimately unfulfilling. I once told a friend of mine that money doesn't motivate me, he couldn't understand this reasoning. To him, money brought success, wealth, the ability to travel. To me it was a convenience but not a necessity, as I find social equity to be a far more rarer commodity and twice as valuable.

Thank you. Good reminder of a basic principle. I've been into simplicity for 25 years or so, and I've benefited tremendously from it, in terms of peace of mind, lowered stress/frustration, more time and energy for what really matters, financial independence and early retirement. I knew from an early age that money didn't buy happiness, so it was easy for me to actualize the non-materialistic and non-consumeristic parts of the philosophy/lifestyle. The more challenging bit has been the mental aspect. I'm prone to accumulation of mental clutter and needless complexity. It distracts and stresses me. Simplifying the physical realm helps with the mental, but the mental is a world unto itself. It's very easy for me to stack up mental clutter. "A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone." Wow, I like that one.

Try meditation. A good routine of meditation (even just 10 to 15 minutes a day) is like a daily cleaning for your mind. Once you get the routine down you may find yourself going much longer either not realizing that much time has passed or out of genuine enjoyment of the act. Plus, it's a meta skill meaning the extra ability to focus you gain will benefit pretty much everything else you do, too.

Please read less books , watch less TV , listen to less music . be selective very selective about what u read , what u Watch on TV & what u listen. These are all things that u fill in ur mind every day. Mental clutter is far more worser than physical clutter in our lives. Process them deep deeper deepest.meditation develops ur capacity to process these mental things more deeper. Then automatically u will progressively read less , watch lesser TV & listen lesser music. And...... U will start reading yourself , watching ur own life like u watch TV , listening to the signals which ur body emits every moment ! Greatest insights will unfold after that....

I think you make valid points. The problem is that there is clearly an innate human need for status that those of us that are creative just can't get met in our daily lives because the culture only really values the superficial status brought by material wealth rather than the value of the creation of something new like a KZread video, poem, novel or work of art. At best we get a pat on the head for our creativity and then get told to get a real job. It's also why most artists can't make a living from their work. I would also imagine quite a few of the people you know may well scoff at the value of these videos you make despite the fact that they are very insightful and creative. I hope you continue to make them well into the future. If I'm being cynical, you could say that there's a reason why, in societies across the globe, people leave school not being financially or emotionally literate, and I suspect it's because financially and emotionally illiterate people will have to plug themselves into the matrix and then live out lives of quiet desperation that perpetuates the very consumerist civilisation that is oppressing us all. I say this as someone who benefits from investing in the stock market and has a great deal to gain from folk continuing to live lives of quiet desperation but also as someone who writes books and would much rather be valued and accepted for that than any property or material goods that I own. I think the big problem we are all facing is how creative people continue to be gaslighted by our civilisation and pushed into the collective shadow and are in large and small ways invalidated consistently over time, which might explains why so many artists and writers turn to alcohol and drugs or die young at their own hands. I mean, the average life expectancy of a poet is only 69 which isn't that much better than someone who lives in a poor neighbourhood and has had limited opportunities in life so has ended up having to do hard manual labour to survive. I mean, why are so many creative people throughout different historical periods consistently dying young or in poverty, and what does that say about us as a species?

I think this is a message to share. I’ve experienced what consumerism does to one’s mental well-being. I saw it change my friends and family’s for better and worse. The key is definitely in moderation. It wouldn’t mean that you have to detach from things completely, but essentially just use/interact with what gives your life value. Thanks for this video essay! Well done! 👏

When I was younger and raising children, it was fun to give them stuff and indulge in fun with them. At a certain point I hit a wall when I was using a lot of time to maintain the environment in a reasonable fashion. Moving was liberating but then settling in and getting comfortable was always challenging. Often I would ponder how great it would be if the moving truck just disappeared. I would fantasize about living in a white room with nothing around, then realized I was going crazy. I have since edited painfully and have forgotten many of the attached items but occasionally I long for something I don't have now. Or I see something I gave away to a relative and want it back. Perhaps this is why kings kept treasure houses. But then you worry about robbers. It is better if you can resist the indulgence in the beginning. I went though a phase of minimalism before my family arrived but now strict organization and self control have won out knowing myself all too well. Good luck with your mind stuff, because after dealing with the external there is the internal minefield...

Well said. Our relationship with our stuff isn't only pragmatic but emotional. Objects remind us of good times and people we love. They represent happiness, comfort, stability, security. I remember reading Marie Kondo's book about tidying up and then watching her show on Netflix, seeing how much people were still holding onto when all it was doing was holding them back. It's what led me to make a little reminder to myself: Purpose precedes property. The goal of my life comes first, then only what makes the goal attainable should be what I have. That property-first mentality, that's how people wind up with so much that they can't really use. We wouldn't have to throw so much away or donate so many things if we never got them in the first place.

You don't lose anything, you don't have to put a lot of effort into cleaning. And the added chore to your already sophisticated lifestyle sometimes tends to make you give up on life bc you think it's too difficult when it's the product of your own life choices. Living minimalistically is winning half the battle against some mental illnesses

I think as it relates to consumerism, this perspective is on point. However I can think of one important caveat to this, which is that there is a housing crisis going on in many parts of the world. In the video you mention that food and shelter are fairly easy needs to satisfy and when you interpret that as satisfying it momentarily, that is true. However the relative stability (of couse nothing is truly stable in the absolute sense) of shelter that comes from owning your own home is out of reach for many young people and so is the possibility of retirement. The latter situation gives us even less of our time we can enjoy as most of us will likely have to work until we drop dead. Of course this doesn't invalidate attempts to make beneficial adjustments internally, but I think it is important not to ignore this external reality when looking at why people work jobs they don't like. It's not always to engage in excessive consumerism, but because in many places house prices exploded while wages stayed stagnant, and you just don't have a choice.

I come from a Latino background (from Dominican Republic) and for us having more means we are worthy or that we have more than other. Growing up with this mentality was very unhealthy and it drained my souls to the fullest. I am glad that I was able to get out of that mentality and that way of thinking and living. Now I feel happier I live in New York City but I bought land in the Dominican Republic a town area, where I can breath fresh air, rivers around the are, beach and I can live a peaceful life with less! As soon as I finish my house and save some money I am moving. "We can exchange time for money, but we cannot exchange money for time". THIS! This resonates with me so much! 💛 This quote right here is the reason why I dislike the idea of "Spending your youth constantly working hard, so that you have plenty of money for your pension". What's the point? You spend the most physically able years of your working long hours (sometimes in a job or town you dislike), so that you can live comfortably for the last 10 - 20 cushy years of your life? It's crazy! Even crazier to think that we not even live long enough to receive our pentions (sad, but true). I agree it's important to pay a small amount into our pensions, so that we can take care of ourselves in old age. But it certainly shouldn't stop us from enjoining life in our "working years". Life is now; Live it! 😊

Yes ! Being minimalist makes you happy. All these accessories of modern life encumber us, give us work and take us time since we must maintain them and finally these objects possess us: let’s get rid of the superfluous. That’s what I did, it took me four years because it was my personal pace and I’m much happier like that. I have more time for the essentials : taking time to be with the people I love, cooking, doing manual activities, taking time to live simply, plus I’ve saved a lot of money and can work less. Oui ! Etre minimaliste rend heureux.

Congratulations your very good algorithm of rationalisation to make your points, you were impeccable. Very well done. I am from Romania, in Transylvania and I love to visit monasteries every 2-3 weeks, the more secluded the better, and I get to experience room with only a bed, a carpet, a table, a chair and an icon or cross on the wall. The peace of mind this gives me is incommensurable.

I just realise watch these type of video essays is kind of like self therapy helps you self reflect a lot and I enjoy watching these kinds of videos so it's a complete win win as it helps better myself in the process or at least help me become more self aware

This one has inspired to re-read my copy of “Walden Pond”. And this also resonates with a desire towards minimalist, simplicity in my life! Thank you so much for your insights!
