Simplest way for carving a PLAGUE DOCTOR from a basswood branch
I've long wanted to carve a plague doctor, and the previous project helped me find the simplest method ( • This is a CROW but a l... ).
First, I whittle the mask and hat, then the shoes and bag, and finally, I carve the hands. I burn the surface of the wood with fire and paint it black.
For wood carving, I used a piece of branch and my regular whittling knife. The block is 75mm in height and 25-30mm in diameter.

About my knife:
For wood carving, I used my regular whittling knife which I made myself; the blade length is 40 mm, and the overall length of the knife is 130 mm.
For beginners:
Using a short piece of branch can be dangerous for beginners. So, I recommend trying to use a long and comfortable piece, and trim it at the end.

Is there special types of wood for carving, or any kind will be fine ?

This is basswood, which is very good for wood carving. I regularly use harder types of wood, such as aspen or birch, and achieve good results. However, if you want to try carving a plague doctor for the first time, basswood would be great.
