Simple Water Distillation for Bushcraft and Survival

Make dirty water / sea water drinkable with a stainless steel water bottle, copper tubing and a wet rag.
STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT EPISODE: A modified version of this still will be used for beach survival.
There is nothing better than dirt time with another guy who enjoys bushcraft. I recently spent the weekend with Darby of the River Bend Survival School. We learned from each other and practiced bushcraft skills. I learned a simple way to purify water. I will add this approach to my arsenal of skills … skills that may be useful in different situations.

It's great that the "old-fashioned" ways of doing things are coming back, and that technology can help us communicate it faster and from other countries. I'm learning more now than I did as a younger person. Thanks Mr. Kramm.

Perfect way to distil water in climates where the sun isn't as prolific, i live in the UK and ive tried the solar distillation methods you'd normally use for desert or ocean survival, cos the climate rarely goes beyond 23 degrees 'C in the summer, and there's alot of overcast solar distillation doesn't seem to work as well, but for this method all you need is a fire which is doable almost anywhere in the world. Wouldn't mind setting one of these up and experimenting with it, on the off chance we have to deal with a chemical or radioactive disaster

KennethKramm I checked out your friends ( Billy Joe Denny ) video and used his ideas and input to build my acorn and hickory nut distiller . My results were more than favorable . I was able to distill 1/4 ounce of pure oil ( after a secondary distillation ) from 4 pounds of acorns and hickory nuts . The nuts were turned into flower which has no bitterness . Far easier than repeated washings in hot water . Thanks again Mr. Kramm .

My brother told me of his travels in Tibet where I was amazed at what he and his fellow traveler friend had to do to ensure their drink water was safe, for some reason I had it in mind melted snow would be safe and mountain streams provide safe water, no way was it. They said the same about mulberries. "You'll get worms." Acceptable if not inspiring were blackberries, huckleberries, wild cherries, wild strwberries, dewberries, wild plums, any nuts, poke salad (simmered in water 3 times to remove the toxins), persimmons if ripened enough to fall to the ground of their own acord.

  • @SuperSwitched

Very easy my good sir. The first distiller you made had a cork stopper not unlike the volcano stove. I just happen to have a volcano cook stove :) All I would be missing is a piece of 1/4" copper tubing. I acquired the Volcano cook stove because it can use debris for the lack of a better word, saving the real resources for heat. If I am ever in a long term situation I would use the Dakota fire pit for "large scale" cooking. Once again to conserve resources. I recently found myself in a discussion wrt solar distillation. Although we find these in many survival books, the principle is totally inadequate, you are going to die. You cannot produce enough water to compensate for natural expenditures included but not limited to the winter time, and extremely exacerbated in a desert scenario. Although 40min to produce a cup is costly in both time and resources, a far better way of manufacturing water, from both salt and fresh water resources. You can and probably will survive with a distiller vice a solar still. The caveat, packing the much needed condenser. In a SHTF scenario, yes I would pack that copper tubing. I hope this helps. :)

Sweet little portable still. I never thought about doing it with a stainless water bottle. I've made one out of an old pressure cooker, tubing, and a five gallon collection bucket. As you might guess, it was far less portable. Still fun to play with on the beach using driftwood (as you did in a more recent video). However, Alaska's seashore climate didn't play too well with my results, raining on my driftwood and keeping things way too cool to have much success. Thanks for idea!

A good way. I did like Distillery, but had to finish off the pot cover military. Cork out of the bottle does not take off?

  • @KennethKramm

    @KennethKramm

    9 жыл бұрын

I've tried both brass fittings and cork stoppers. Both work. However, the cork is cheaper AND it expands with moisture, so there is a tight fit. Because the inside of the bottle has screw thread, the cork is screwed into place and is relatively secure. If there were a problem and the still became clogged, I would rather have the cork pop off than have the bottle explode; so it is a safety feature. Also, the cork does not transfer much heat from the stainless steel bottle, so the distilling tube stays cooler, which is a good thing.

Thanks Travis. The sandwiches were even better than they looked. The addition of wild edibles mad them special~ In two weeks, I'm going to Padre Island National Seashore (gulf of Mexico). This is the largest undeveloped barrier island in the world. Will be camping for three days.... so maybe there will be an opportunity to use the still to make fresh water from the ocean~ Good to have the still in the Jeep, just incase we get stuck in some remote section of the island. YEA, it would be fun to film a real survival situation!

When grilling something sensitive (like bread) try using hardwood chunks to get dense coals with evenly radiating heat. Once your coals are formed push them out into a ring a few inches wider than the food you intend to cook. It was a shame to see that delicious sandwich get burnt. Thank you for the video. It was clear, concise, and fun to watch ^-^

Hanz Flackshnack I also use indirect heating. I build the 2 rings. one for the main fire and then a smaller ring to the side with a tunnel to them. Racking the coals into the tunnel as the fire makes them and allow the heat to indirectly cook the food.

What you say, reminds me of what my dad said "it will put hair on your chest." .... when eating burned toast over a campfire.... when eating campfire food that nd dark spots of ember charcoal on it.... nature's pepper. We boys all wanted hair on our chest. I made a mistake once, telling my young daughter, when camping with her that eating burned toast will put hair on her chest.... You can image the action of my 7yo daughter..... She is now 41 yo. Take care, Ken

Well done! So you used a cork instead of a fitting. I infer that that works well enough. Do you feel it is necessary to run the water through the still twice? You sort of left that matter up in the air. Any tips about how to best carry the coil? Thanks again for an excellent video.

Fantastic video Ken, the only suggestion I would make is possibly digging out a small hole in the earth to set the collection vessel in and saturating the dirt around the container to help cool the water off a bit faster "this doesn't help the copper cooling I understand" and to lower the angle of the copper tubing to help the flow of the vapors. This might actually hurt the condensation within the copper tubing with such a short set up, but if water should pool say "mid-way" in the tubing, then pressure could build up and cause your "cork to pop"...lol. Sorry about the satire there but I couldn't resist...but yet it could be true...as to my experiments in distillation have shown evidence of. There are MANY ways to make a more efficient distillery...but using just the set-up you have in "it's simplicity" just lowering the collection vessel would reduce the "BLOW BACK" hazard. With the boiling container suspended above the fire and the collection container on the ground will serve the same purpose..."BUT" as you stated and this is VERY important "KEEP YOUR BOILING AT A LOW TEMPERATURE" Your Video here is one, if not the best thus far for this type of application. I applaud you. Lets all KEEP the Faith! And blessed be the day our kids can carry knives to a school camp out without getting suspended...after all...a knife is a tool and not a weapon. Bad people choose and perverse tools to become weapons. Our forefathers are turning over in their graves right now with this silly ZERO TOLERANCE nonsense. Peace my friend.

Amen!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I am a mother that lives in Southern California. My father was a former Marine, and he taught me a lot of things. He taught me how to aim, keep hydrated in the desert, how to get water to survive and what I need and do to get by if things go sideways. The most important thing he taught me how to protect my 5’ 100lb self with just my hands. I never thought I would have to use that knowledge until I was attacked by so-called contractor that was here for a quote. It was very clear to me by his language that he did not like Americans. I think you get my point. It was during the day with all my neighbors home. Even with all my yelling and screaming not one neighbor came out. All those years my dad made me practice so I didn’t even think about it. I just did what my dad taught me and I got away. The police came to take a report and the picture of the car the guy was in. The senior officer was also an ex- Marine from the old core. He asked me if I felt comfortable speaking to a man for the report and his trainee took the report. I can tell the senior gentleman was quite upset about what happened. He must interrupted us three times saying “I’m so glad you fought back”. I do know that whoever it was that came, had to seek some kind of medical care from the gouges in his eyes. A life lesson well learned. I will never step out of my house without some kind of protection. At minimum my father’s knife. It breaks my heart that our country has come to what it has. I doubt you’ll ever see this post since yours is eight years old but I’m pretty sure we think the same way especially now. I hate the state I live in but I’m disabled and have no other choice. I have no other family except for my son. Most of my friends have passed or are in very poor health. May God bless you, and your loved ones. May God help or country too.🙏🏻🇺🇸🙏🏻
