Simple Man
-
Mama told me when I was young
"Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it'll help you some sunny day"
"Oh, take your time, don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
You'll find a woman and you'll find love
And don't forget, son, there is someone up above"
"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
"Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"
"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
Oh yes, I will
"Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"
"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
Baby, be a simple, really simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple, kind of simple man.

We played this at my brother’s funeral. He passed 2 yrs ago, was a huge Skynnrd fan. He listened to our momma, married a good woman and believed in God. Now in heaven with mom, wife, and hope he is chatting with Ronnie. 😢

There is a small chance Al Kooper intentionally pissed RVZ off to get an improved performance out of him on “Simple Man” - a bit out of the toolbox that any great producer/boss/director/editor might occasionally resort to. As good as RVZ’s vocals were on the earlier version of “Simple Man” found on the “lost” Muscle Shoals album, they really don’t soar until the band cuts the version for the “Pronounced” album, IMHO. Either Kooper did this on purpose, or it wasn’t on purpose but rather a happy accident. Either way, I think RVZ was extremely determined & pissed when he put the “city slicker” Kooper in his fancy car, shut the door & told him: “We’ll call you when we’ve cut” the song (according to the authorized documentary). In another interview, one of the guitar players said Ronnie even told Kooper to leave, “or there’d be trouble.” In the documentary, Kooper recalls of this incident (speaking in his NY accent): “He was the boss. I feared him.”

I was 9 when the plane went down. I had discovered Skynyrd just weeks earlier when my older brother and his girlfriend had bought their tickets to see them at the Hollywwood (Fla.) Sportatorium on Oct. 17th. They were playing their records non stop in the days leading up to the day of the show. I believe it was only their 3rd show on that tour and would be their last in Florida and the 2nd or 3rd to last ever. The day after the Sportatorium show he scrounged up any money he had, shook me down for my $2.00 allowance money and went out and bought Street Survivors. They had the album pulled from the shelves of all the record stores within days of its release because the original cover showed the band walking down the street and Steve Gaines and one or two of the other guys were in flames in the picture. The widows and girlfriends supposedly had asked the label to do that and reissue it without the flames. I think it had only been out a few days when they pulled it. I still have that original, first print copy, original copy. I had it framed back in 1987 after seeing Skynyrd on the reunion/Southern By the Grace of God Tour and it's been hanging on my wall ever since.

To me Simple Man is and forever be my personal favorite one that they ever made cause I relate to the song cause Everytime I listen to it all I think about is How much i love My family and Friends and my Hero and how I got here in life and how far I gotten by Listening to this song Everyday and I am Thankful to God for that I really want to have this song played at my Funeral someday

A great team of players and song writers in this awesome band. Each had their own musical identity . I am thinking this is a Gary written song, with him playing the main chords, it sounds like his style. Eddie VH pretty much put an end to that style of rock and guitar playing, but Skynard will stand the test of time IMO

You are somewhat right, the song was actually written by Leon Wilkinson (Bass player and later Guitarist after Ed left). He showed it to them and they added a few things to it. But yes, that is 100% Gary on the riffs and solo's. Good ear.

The song was based on words of wisdom from parents and I think Mr. Van Zant's grandmother as well. Mr. Rossington explains that no matter what, they always at least listened to what their parents had to say.
