Simple, Compact Camp Kitchen: Building the Box
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I'm out here trying to get out in nature more, but my gear needs a serious upgrade. So I knocked out a camp kitchen / chuckbox / patrol box to organize my cooking gear, and store some basics (oil, sugar, COFFEE, etc.).
I didn't want to spent a lot of effort doing joinery, so I took many shortcuts, such as using a lot of braces, and using inexpensive tubs on rails, instead of building drawers.
I wanted something I can deploy in a few different scenarios, and doesn't take up any more room that a plastic storage tote. Since my partner's idea of camping is a 3 star hotel, it's just going to be me out there, for 1-2 nights, it's fairly compact.
FINISHED DIMENSIONS:
22.5" wide x 20" tall x 13" deep
Main / drawer compartment is 17" of the total width
Pantry is 5" of the total width
Stove compartment is 4" of the total height

Like a lot of others, I too saw Carolyn mentioned your channel and had to come by and check it out. I've been thinking of making a kitchen camp box myself! Thanks for some good ideas!

Creators with a sense of humor are very much appreciated!!
Very nice! Corey, you are so talented!!
3:45 Seen a fair few DIY wood work projects myself and have seen plenty people who drive nails even when they glue. They say the glue is what binds and the nails hold the pieces together while the glue dries. The added brace just upgraded this to earthquake grade!
Hey there, cool Kitchen Chuck Box. I saw your video referral on Caravan Carolyn's post. Good job!
That looks awesome . Great job .
Ah, this is exactly what i have been looking for!! I might steal some of your solutions. Thank you for sharing!!
You’re an inspiration.. thank you for this video 😍💕👍🏽🇦🇺👏🏽
This is an awesome box. I giggle at some of your real life authentic comments too. I got super excited when I saw the use of trofast bins. My kidlets are all grown and I actually have the tall Trofast frame and a couple of bins. I am going to use this for my kitchen box frame, get a couple of lids for the old bins (so glad Ikea still makes them), and add a front drop down "table" with a chain that will act as the door to hold on my stuff in it. I may try to add a swing out pantry like you did. Again, awesome!

Sounds like a great plan! A drop table will definitely give you way more surface area to work on. One thing that I thought of afterward, was I wonder if it would have been better to have the drawers pull out laterally, as opposed to long ways, for better access. Something to consider. 🤔 Best of luck with your build!
i love to listen to you. so much fun. thank you for this.
Love the wine glass holder!! Most of these are built by dudes and they just don’t have a feature like that! I also like your note about the totes. That said, I’d say you are a darn fine woodworker!!

Thank you! It's all about priorities 😄🍷
Very cool! Thanks for sharing I am about to build a very similar one. Protip if you are lazy like me is to make a list of your panel sizes and get home depot to cut them for you. Their big saw does a better job than you could at home. They also never charge the cuts in my experience. If you are nice to the operator at all they always just wave you off .. they don't seem to want to do any paperwork lol. I always zip them together with pocket screws and always amazed how quickly it comes together and how strong the end product is.
Thank you! I've always wanted to build one of these. Not only do you show how to build it, you show how to plan it.
Cool design and of course you are tickled pink with it!! Campervan Carolyn said it would be neat. Spot on 🌾🌻🌾

I’m so glad you posted this! I’ve been looking for something like your idea. I loved the clip of Ross yelling, “Pivot!” A great little memory from….back in the day. I can’t believe I even wrote that but, I’m still in denial about getting older. I also appreciate your showing the clip of you wearing a headband…as a gardener I can drip buckets from my head…something that is so unexpected. Just nother reason I wear a hat :). Thanks

I have the camping kitchen box my father made in around 1947. 13 deep, 16 high and 26 long. Has shelves and 1 drawer. Unlike yours, it was just for cooking and eating tools, silverware, plates, mixing bowl, fry pan coffee pot, etc. Its 1/4 plywood with 2 doors on front. Must have 10 layers of old time varnish on it.

Great idea! Totally understand -- we have a feline queen as well. 😺
I put 2x10 or 2x12 on my metal sawhorses and cut them a few inches longer so I have mini work bench that clamps can be used on. Put 2 or 3 together for a bit bigger work bench/ table. Can also screw the saw horses to short scrap countertops. Those countertops are usually available at Restore locations and usually quite inexpensive.

Very nice! We finally have sawhorses, and sometimes, even plywood to put on top of them. I also freed up a folding table that was functioning as our miter saw stand, so I have way more -- and way safer -- work surfaces choices now. Thank goodness! (Also I love ReStore).

Same, but I got a 2" pink foam insulation board to put on top. The circular saw cuts into that instead of the plywood top

Very well done build Martha! The plastic bins as drawers is just so thoughtful for weight savings..I was doing something similar but with built drawers instead. I’m not handy by any means…so my one and only attempt at building the drawer system for my rig was a real learning experience lol. I missed quite a few structural reinforcements I see you implementing that seem so basic and fundamental in nature, that would’ve totally made my build more worth while. Also, without any legitimate power tools or workshop, I had Home Depot do the big plywood cuts, and then rented power tools and/or did the rest of the build by hand on a make shift plywood work table on the ground lol. Don’t think I’ll attempt V2.0 until I have at least the tools & infrastructure you have.

Way to make it happen, even with limitations! Many people wouldn't even try. 👏👏👏 Bins are great for saving weight, but also, I just really hate / am not very good at building drawers. I will get out of it any way that I can 😂
Hi! I'm from Caravan Carolyn's channel!
This is a lovely video, thank you for showing everything in detail (like the flathead/roundhead screws... seems simple but its a detail that could save me a lot of frustration). one thing though... would you please for the love of god put the safetybracket back on your anglegrinder? those cutting disks can explode and they will do some severe damage. thanks for the helpful upload!:)

Love that idea! Maybe you can find a garden cart to refurb for that purpose 🤔
I agree, plastic bins instead of wooden drawers. Faster, less expensive, and lighter. Even my homemade teardrop trailer has shelves spaced to hold plastic bins for drawers. My chuck box for truck camping has no "front" or shelves, just a carry box full of shoe boxes. For travel, I slide all the shoe boxes out onto the picnic table, roll the box onto it's back, and place the shoe boxes back in. This design requires that the carry box end is a square so the shoe boxes fit in with the carry box opening either facing forward or up. Width is dependent on my how many shoe boxes you want to put in. Couldn't be more simple. Of course no stove, dutch ovens, or large pots! All the small items very well organized, though.

Simple? Hmmm! I guess I'll first need to make a gift list of power tools needed to make this beauty. At least I'll have relevant instructions. Saving... pennies and video. 😊 Thank you.

I think it could all be done with 2 tools: the saw of your choice (circular, table, or jigsaw) and a drill. 🤔 Cutting the hinge was easy with an angle grinder, but I have seen someone do it with a jigsaw, fitted with a blade for metal. If you have the patience and energy, it could probably be done with a hacksaw. However, my angle grinder was about $10-$15 from Harbor Freight, and I have used it for so many projects! The brad nailing could certainly be replaced with a few well-placed screws. I just really enjoy using the brad nailer. PEW PEW PEW! 😄 But don't let that stop you from getting any and all of the tools you might "need". 😉😉😉

The reason you have trouble with pocket holes in plywood... 3/4 plywood is not 3//4 it is thinner.... take the drill for the pocket hole jig and back off the stop a bit- maybe 3/16" That will make it work. Nice job on the box. Happy Camping :)
