Unsocial! I can't imagine anything more beautiful than the feeling of the freedom of the personal ability to fly, similar to the Birds. But then, Birds don't talk....😎

I knew a guy who used the cutting of the panels on his one man balloon to spell `SELFISH' :-) the letters were that big you couldn't see the word in one take, so it just looked like a pretty pattern from close up, but your right freedom of the skies is wonderful

@@TheBigBalloonFestival I knew a dude who flew...and he was an asshole to his ground crew...so much so that he had to give up because no-one liked his attitude...way to much "My Bloon and I'll take it where and when I like" But to return to the original subject...if you don't like it, get one.

Very cool. I remember seeing articles about the Cloudhoppers in an issue of Ballooning, back in the 80s. Very cool, indeed. Thanks for sharing this.

24-07-2020: Outstanding video! I've flew an experimental hopper once. Loved it!! I enjoyed it so much......... I purchased it! Due to my advanced age(58) and the fact I had a total knee replacement, I felt the necessity for a basket to protect myself. I opted for a Ultramagic Tekno CT-01 basket which has worked outstandingly for several seasons so far. Early in 2020, I purchased a Cameron N-31 (formally G-LEAU) looking to get it in the air later this year when conditions are more favorable. Cheers mates!

AWESOME, thanks for the feedback, always a bit nervous when it comes to looking at something so technically detailed, and committing it to film, but I love the feeling of being up there on a great day kicking my legs as I fly :-) Look forward to sharing the skies with you in the future I'll keep an eye out for your bright yellow balloon on the launch site - Happy Landings

@@TheBigBalloonFestivalLikewise! G-LEAU is now in a loving home in Glendale, Arizona USA. My flying season here especially for the "Perrier" balloon is extremely short. Quite opposite from the rest of the world. I fly from Mid October thru April(if I'm lucky) 2-3 days a week in those months. Temperature in Phoenix right now is 35°C, way to hot for safe flight. The Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque has been canceled for this year due to the Corona Virus. Plan on being there next year for sure. I fly a few events around Arizona and New Mexico. Maybe our paths will cross someday! Fly safe!

Lovely presentation. This is what I want my life to be about, I've always had a bit of an aviation bug all my life and this seems the perfect way to go about it. Or at least a step up from radio control models.

Thank you for the kind comments, I'm really lucky to be involved in this world. I've worked on some huge balloons but the little ones (and where I started with rc balloons) will always be the best 😍 are you learning to fly balloons? Or do you fly a balloon already?

I had a chat with one of my friends who keeps an eye on such things and he tells me around £10k for an envelope and £7k for a bottom end, brand new, is probably not a bad estimate.

How much time do you need to get the balloon ready for flight?

The fastest I've ever seen a balloon get off the ground (having driven into a field to launch) is 7 minutes ! But I'm more comfortable in the 30 minuteish time frame. Hope that answers your question?

Do you need a PPL(B) for this? Edit: Yes, should have checked before asking.

  • @TheBigBalloonFestival

Yes for those of us in the UK PPL(B) though I think there have been rare examples of PUT's (Pilot Under Training) being observed by instructor pilots from other balloons or the ground while flying hoppers. (Though the PUT must have had nerves of steel :-) )

Great video. I find it strange that i don't see a cruise system that runs the burner for you. I’m going to guess that All the single person balloons need to have a license.

  • @TheBigBalloonFestival

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Cruise control or even an autopilot is really rare in ballooning and I've only heard of a couple ever developed, usually used for record setting duration flight cross Atlantic/pacific/America etc. As for a licence it depends where you are. Not all countries require one but in the UK. Yes.
