This is unreal!! I'm 63 and have been actively listening to jazz and jazz fusion since I was 12 years old. I've heard drummers from Buddy Rich to Billy Cobham and many more of the greats. Simon Phillips is absolutely one of the best I've ever heard! He can play any and every type of music with incredible precision and understanding and self awareness. And even though he has a huge kit, he doesn't overplay... ever! He is an amazing drummer. He's one for the ages!

Look at his who-he's-played-with-CV, it's crazy. There's a reason he got all those top gigs, he's brilliant and a great pro.

I agree, when I got this drum clinic video. It has been awesome nerdy music to enjoy. Simon has a great talent to play drums better than I can and I’d like to think I’m pretty good. But, he come off very technical in his playing.

@@robertreedy414indeed - his technique is effortless 😍. I think since in the 80s records, that drum sound&tune we can identify he's the one behind the kit. Love his works until today....

Indeed. People to often undeservingly label drummers as one of the greats but truer words have never been spoken about this guy right here. I’ve studied his playing for so many years that I’ve developed post traumatic stress disorder trying to wrap my head around how good this guy is lol. The man is so sick he definitely qualifies for free healthcare
Amazing video! Incredible performance, even compared to today´s drummers, so fast and unreal performers, but this musicality is other world.
The secret to his talent lies in the TAMA spandex pants.
Incredible discipline is what it takes. Depending on the venue, Simon plays what is necessary never too much never too little, always just right. He teaches every time he plays.
One of the most amazing sounding kits I've ever heard, just perfection

Wow! Amazing Simon my idol..
If Rush were ever to do one last tour for say, in memory of Neil Peart, Simon would be the number 1 choice. He's just as musical and unique as Neil ever was, but of course in a different way.

Peart couldn't begin to play a lot of Simon's stuff!

As a drummer of going on 25 years and a massive fan of both drummers in question I couldn’t even begin to agree with that sentiment. Phillips has always been comfortable within a wider variety of musical genres than Peart no question but Peart absolutely had the technical ability to play anything he wanted. That being said Peart didn’t have the natural feel for all genres and had to sit a learn things outside his comfort zone. In some ways it made his limited ventures outside the progressive rock realm seem a bit rehearsed and more robotic. Probably makes Phillips the better drummer but Peart was still a very technical player and absolutely had the technical ability to play anything. To say he couldn’t begin to play a lot of Simon’s stuff would be an inaccurate assumption. However I would have liked to see Peart venture more outside of progressive rock. I guess we’ll never know what all he could have done. Regardless of how much credit anyone is or isn’t willing to give Peart, he was a brilliant human being who certainly deserved better than to go out the way he did. I’m still pretty devastated over it honestly

Mesmerizing.Simon is incredible 😊
I've seen this video many times, but never as clear as this! Thank you so much for doing this. Had the good fortune to see Protocol 5 in Seattle 2 nights ago and it was spectacular. Afterwards Simon was kind enough to sign my Zildjian K China cymbal! I was like a kid a Christmas.
I love his stair climbing technique. Also his ability to close the barn door. He can inflate without oversimplifying like no one else!!

my favorite era of Simon... and thank you for uploading such a quality version of this. Sounds amazing!
Love this! Simon and AJ are real chameleons. World class musicians in multiple styles. Ray’s not too shabby either!!
great sounding drums . I love it
Astonishing. Thanks for uploading this. Amazing to think I saw him in several clinics 8 years before this. He was really at the peak of his powers here though. Wow.
Simon is Sensational with whoever he performs with ! Fantastic video
I memorized this when I worked at San Francisco Guitar Center in the 90’s.
THANKS FOR THE HQ 60FPS VERSION! 👏
master at work!
Love clean rudiments with the pocket grovve, nice!🥁🤘😎🎶
phenomenal
I've been touching drums from Simon Philips, we've stocked his drums in Ragtime shop in Opole/Poland. Lots of cases. One of the best festivals are in Opole. Philips, Royster Jr. Virgil Donati, and many more were there.
I love how even his "patterns" are still listenable and good music. Some drummers nowadays have such ridiculous nonsensical background noise masquerading as music during their clinics.
This is so god damn good!
seen many times wonderful
Astounding !
trascinante e sublime
Simon has great attack and dynamics. I like Gavin Harrison for the same reasons plus their drum tone are alike also.
I have the 2 VHS tapes ... I can finally see them again. Simon Phillips is the complete drummer

I saw Simon do a drum 🥁 clinic when I lived in St. Louis in 1987. I wished I had changed to the open handed technique back then. I knew at the time he was considered the best double bass drummer in the world 🌎. Does drumming get much better? Maybe some of Dave Weckl's work. But that is splitting tiny hairs. Also discovered Weckl back in those days. Dave's St.Louis Drum Teacher was in the audience for his drum clinic. Wonder what that felt like as the teacher of a master player.
@shannonmiller5648

No. Drumming doesn’t get any better. Dave is certainly right up there along with cats like Gavin Harrison, Danny Carry, Curt Cress and a handful or so others. None of which I’d say are any better or worse. When players make it to this level of skill it’s no longer a matter of who’s better. Just different. At that point it’s just a matter of who’s personal flavor resonates with you as an individual the most because the playing field is otherwise level where skill is concerned.
Even the young simon played so tastefully

Mike Portnoy on Awake most definitely, but apart from that I don't really hear a great deal of similarity.
The best drummer of all ages, and that with distance to the second one - for me it is Ian Paice, for you it may be Billy Cobham or Ginger Baker or Buddy Rich... My list of the best 5: 1. Simon Phillips 2. Ian Paice 3. Lee Kerslake 4. Gerry Brown 5. Steve Gadd
What's the name of the Protocol song played at the end of this video?
Simon is simply incredible, he's one of my greatest influences and just a really nice guy.
The Time signature for the 33/8 (13:52 min.) should be this way: 1 bar in 4/4 1 bar in 3/4 1 bar in 3/8 2 bars in 4/4 200 bpm quarter note ca. Or... 1 bar in 6/4 1 bar in 5/8 (the one on the octoban) 2 bars in 4/4 The second section is in 5 dotted half note (15/4) + 3/8
Anthony Jackson?
