He is indeed, and we can't spare those; is it already almost two weeks since Neil Peart passed? Phillips may not have reached the stratospheric status of the latter, what with being considered the best of the best and all that, but no need to be a god to be damn good and Phillips is damn good.

I find it unfortunate that Rush, a band known to flirt with many a genre, never experimented with a more jazzy rock, or even just with wind instruments, be it just for kicks. I would be very surprised .if none of the three mastered a sax (for example), clarinette, flute even. Peart's robust yet disciplined style would have served him well in fusion. But Rush was known for keeping very tight schedules, I guess they had to draw the line somewhere. Pity for Peart to have worked so hard, piled up so many millions of dollars and then pass while his dream retirement palatial home was receiving the finishing touches. He had planned to study philosophy on a quiet domain he had acquired in Quebec near the studio where Rush had recorded their best-produced material.

It's quite crazy that it is all recorded live. Zero mistakes. I'd need 200 takes.

Who said musicians don't work hard. The amount of time and energy Phillips obviously spent to write that drum part, every little twist and turn of that composition that needed to be learned and executed perfectly. Hard work indeed.

I know 210 👎🏻’s who haven’t a clue of recognizing true musicianship. Been following Simon ever since seeing him on The Who’s Tommy tour in ‘89. (live @ Dallas-Cotton Bowl)

That tasty transition at 4:10 gives me the shivers its so good. LBB!

Imagine being one of those very few very blessed audience members who got to sit up close and personal and experience this music. Im incredibly jealous

You need to offer a hi-res digital download of this session for audiophiles like me. I'd love to have the album, but since I don't a turntable... I do have a killer PC setup with a Wyred 4 Sound DAC, Wyred 4 Sound pre and amp, and some big Dunlavy SC-IV speakers that sound amazing.

Hey Little Big Beat, it’s very true. Composition comes from Piano, Guitar, etc. When Guitarist write, pianist write, it’s the origin listeners are use too. Drummers sometimes heavily compose for drum with emphasis on beats and rhythm with melody either missing or thin. Simon is rich in sound, coming from funk, jazz, and fusion. Love it! Come to the SF Bay Area and share it please.

Simon Phillips is one of the easiest drummers to listen to because he is not just a drummer but a musician. This whole band is awesome. Greg Howe is phenomenal. Earnest Tibbs is like 100% pocket. The keyboard player is great too.

Ernest Tibbs on Bass ...also played with Allan Holdsworth in 2008 ...amazing player.

A brilliant example of the freedom you get if you replace the right hand with the left one when working with hi-hats and cymbals. I like this approach of Simon Phillips . Great drummer!!!!

After four decades at the top of the business Simon Phillips is still the most musical drummer out there. A joy to watch....

I love the way Ernest Tibbs is feeling the music ...

It goes without saying that Simon is an incredible drummer. But the guys playing with him are fantastic in their own right. The music is so great and reminiscent of the great jazz from the '80s and '90s.

Absolutely no weak spots anywhere from anyone - fabulous music and playing. Great guitar tone. This is what fusion should be - no waffle, airy-fairy fartiness nor pseudo poseurs --- just out-and-out musicianship and style-blending at its very best.

Freaking awesome. The drum tone (toms) is out of the world, specifically the bass drums. Jut WOW! I mean all of it...just wow!

Those huge rolls across the toms are so satisfying, aren't they? Incredible! When I look back on Simon's career I'm impressed at how versatile he is. He could do Pete Townsend power pop and Jeff Beck fusion all at once!

I just love how Simon can basically take that one triplet feel to anything, and make it sound like the best thing ever. Truly amazing.

There are many great drummers. All in their abilities and genre. They all deserve their place in the sky so to speak. Simon Philips is one of those too.

Absolutely sensational performance. The intensity of playing from each of these wonderful musicians, and in particular Simon Phillips is a joy to behold!!
