@garywallace5602 - Firstly, he was the one who started that trend of reaching the latter stages of tournaments, initially at under age level before bringing those kids through to international level. Secondly, I didn't see Southgate out there playing away in North Macedonia having 15 shots at goal with only two on target. Thirdly it wasn't Southgate who lost his bottle in the World Cup quarter finals against the world champions.

.....and it's irritating me because Walker would never say that to Guardiola who would never accept it. I was not looking for an 8-0 win over N. Macedonia but I wasn't expecting a draw either, and it annoys me that the fans are blamed for being "entitled" when the obvious problems are overlooked: i.e. They drew a team they should beat, they hardly had a shot, they played badly again, and there is still no consistency.

I blame him for picking Maguire, Henderson, and an out of form Rashford, and I blame the FA for employing a championship level manager to take charge of one of the best squads we’ve ever had, at a time when these tournaments are there for the taking. This is going to be another tournament that ends in disappointment. Southgate isn’t good enough, and I’m not basing that opinion on yesterdays result.

@@willbritannia5217 well what are you basing it on? Because the games we’ve lost at tournaments have been to the winners, and to 2 runners up…it’s not like we’re losing to bad teams! Croatia were far more experienced than us at the time, Italy were the most in form team in the world at the time, over 20 matches unbeaten and France were the reigning world champions at the time we played them. And 2 of those losses were because of penalty misses

Its quite simple for me we have Southgate who is like a 90+ year old man at the wheel of a Ferrari but driving with the handbrake on.

Do England fans seriously never learn? Why would the team who are ranked 4th in the world and have never won the European championships expect to win it? We have 2 world class players (Kane, Bellingham), some good players and some average players. The same can be said for France, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Portugal… What gives England fans the right to expect to win the tournament? I think Simon Jordan is setting the expectation high because he wants Southgate to fail.

Simon's point is; international football is quite weak right now and England are talented in comparison and therefore need to capitalise on it. They have had opportunities in tournaments and need to try and win it. Will they? Not likely as like you said there are other good teams, although from that list Argentina, Brazil and Belguim are pretty poor on paper in comparison to recent years hence Simon's point. But anything can happen in tournament football. I mean take the WC, Argentina were nowhere near the best team at the WC, they were average in the group, not great against netherlands etc but they still won so the best team does not usually win tournaments.

Maybe they sound entitled because southgate was handed the euro 2020 trophy on a silver platter. The only way he could’ve not won the trophy was if out of 100 cards southgate could pick from, only one said “italy win euro 2020” and the others said “england win euro 2020”. The one card that southgate picked out of a hat destinated italy as euro 2020 champs meaning he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. This is enough of a failure that the only way southgate can be seen as success is if he wins euro 2024. He has no other option.

The only top team you could argue that Southgate has beaten is a severely declining Germany in Euro 2020. They’ll have the best centre forward and attacking midfielder at the tournament, along with some other high quality players. France aside no one matches them pound for pound.

Arrogance and pride blinds even the wise.

I think people need to be realistic. We have a poor defence that can be breached easily and a forward line without the guile or passing ability to go through a tight defence. As in previous tournaments we will rely on free kicks and penalties and hope our weak defence is not exposed. Doesnt matter who the manager is.

"What more could you want?" How about trying to win games instead of literally passing the ball around randomly for 90 minutes. It's utterly insufferable to watch and sucks all the enjoyment out of what is supposed to be a beautiful game. I've said it many times before - I'd rather England had a go and lost, than bored me to tears and scraped a win. Also, saying "Well we've already qualified so it doesnt matter", I have 2 issues with. Firstly, we also play this way when we need to win, so it's not isolated to these so called meaningless games. Secondly, we should be instilling a winning mentality, and putting teams like this to the sword helps to do that.

England don’t understand the intricacies of football. That’s why they never win. No dynamism, no cleverness, no creativity. It goes beyond having a “good generation of players”. It’s having fire and pride in your belly and managing a game with intelligence and unpredictability. Something countries like Argentina, Italy, France have in spades. Mark my words, Italy as poor as they’ve been in qualifying…will build themselves up again by the time the tournament starts.

That's only the media though, not the England set up. But the media are atrocious, I agree, Jordan being yet another of the clueless ones.

How is he still 'building' 8 years into the job? It's not like he's 'developing and coaching' these players into better footballers, he sees them for a few days every couple of months. It's Klopp and Pep and Emery and Arteta and Howe and the coaching staff at the clubs actually coaching these players and making them better. All an international manager has to do is pick a squad from the best players the clubs have produced and set them up as a team. It's literally all about motivation and tactics, and Southgate's tactics are abysmal. Being media-friendly and politically correct and or whatever else keeps Southgate in this job is absolutely irrelevant.

Those who understand football base a player's quality off of - funnily enough - their quality, not the team trophies they've won. Both are spearheads of two of Europe's biggest clubs and the frontrunners for the Ballon d'Or

We were shite...however. North Macedonia are no mugs. They may be a new and relatively obscure nation but they have some very, very good players and I think the conversation around how England should be hammering them is showing massive disrespect to that nation and their players. I sometimes think this is exactly why the 'lesser' nations tend to do so well against us. They hate us or at least what they see in the press or online about how we should be battering them.
